360's freezing/overheating

I wonder if it was due overheating I couldn't access any game demos in the xbox360 demo kiosk I was going to try yesterday.
The screen was showing some videos, I pressed the controller buttons but nothing happened, then I pressed the "reset" button in the middle of the demo kiosk front.
It went to some vertically arranged menu (four or so columns, the second of which I think was marked "game demos" or something), tried to select it, but no matter what I did with the controllers seemed to work... at one point it did say something like "player 2 has entered" in that menu when I'd pressed some 2P controller button.
Walked away a bit embarassed as there was a couple of kids waiting their turn behind me. Didn't stay and look if they managed to get it work after me.
..but maybe it's just me, there must have been some secret button combination to press to gain access to the demos ;)

It would be great to know if it's just a certain batch of XBox360 (serial number) that is defect or if it's a random defect (badly assembled?) or if it's a major design flaw in their cooling scheme...

This always happens on console launches - the surprising thing here is that the console hasn't launched yet, these are the competition winners are they not, so numbers of hardware out there seems likely to be pretty small. Could be worrying.

it's not surprising since newly released game systems will have defectives...

as the production is being rushed...

and it's been that way for at least for what i can remember...

but i do recall seeing a picture of the assembly line for the 360...

someone here posted an article and some pictures...

and i remember playfully commenting on their lack of gear for handling such delicate parts...

The system does run very very hot, but I've had mine in an enclosed entertainment center for about 3 hours straight so far without even the slightest hiccup.

I did take the PGR3 disk out a few minutes ago and that was very hot. Almost hot enough to burn your fingers.

seems like random events, you either get a good one or a bad one. im guessing it has something to do with the thermal paste.

btw, some of those are not console winners.

That seems to be the most plausible explanation, but why would disconnecting the HDD solve the problem?

maybe the hdd blocks vents or adds some heat? later in the post the guy said its not even working without the HD anymore. so im guessing its definately a heat issue and not just the HD, most likely caused by bad thermal paste installing on random machines?

If the actual problem is the PSU, then it makes sense disconnecting the HD would help as then the xbox360 does not draw as much current from the PSU.

didnt think of that, the psu could be a factor also. hopefully this problem doesnt get big.

But doesn't the X360 have an external PSU?

So predictable.

I forgot, I made a thread on TXB about two weeks ago predicting these "Xbox blows up! Dont buy it!" type posts.

I should find that and link it. Made it like a month ago.

Mine works great thanks for asking LOL.
