360... too dark?

Really? You stated that it was to hide inferior textures, and then tried to pass that off with a "dunno". Yeah....
Yeah, I said the console version of BF2 was darker than it's PC cousin, BUT that was done to hide inferior textures, so I don't know 'bout X360's case (because I doubt the X360 would suffer from the same thing).

Relax!

If you’re using the VGA cable with your Xbox 360, you’ll have noticed that all games are PS3 bright.

Does washed-out represent the correct brightness level?

What? Correct brightness level? No such thing. That's completely individual setting.

Looks like a TV Scale Vs PC Scale issue, as ERP said.

I hope Sony adds the option to switch the output between them in a firmware update.

For me I've found it to be a problem with this game only. All my other games, and DVD playback, look fine, even condemned has more detail in the dark areas and that's meant to be a gloomy game.

Although the lighting in MotorStorm wowed me, I'm starting to wonder if it's easier to get more realistic lighting from the 360 (HDR?) than the PS3?

some games seem to be very flat and odd looking wrt lighting compared to their 360 counterparts.

It shouldn't be more difficult in terms of system features. But it could be that devs are using FP10 on XB360, and finding BW short on PS3, use LDR.

Marvel UA's main difference on PS3 is better lighting. You can tell quite a big difference too its quite nice. Also PS3 can do HDR by itself and can do HDR+AA using different techniques like 360 uses fp10

If you read IGN's review on MUA they go into some detail on it. Cheers

Funny you say that, as I never saw any difference on the gametrailers videos. Here's all I found at IGN:
Oh, and just for argument's sake, we popped in the 360 version of Ultimate Alliance to compare and we have to say... the PS3 edition just isn't as polished. Comparatively, there's a lot more framerate stutter with our game compared to theirs (expect hiccups when turning the camera in highly-populated areas) and the colors are deeper and seem to be in better contrast with the 360. At least Sony owners can take solace in knowing that in 1080p, their game's textures certainly look better, and that regardless of resolution, Ultimate Alliance has better bloom lighting and more particles on PS3.
Bloom differences are not related to machine power or capabilities, I can tell you that for sure.

I really think any lighting differences are from ERP's explanation of where the colours saturate. It's basically nothing more than white-crush and a bit of black-crush on the PS3.

and yet the game looks better on the 360...

That was my thought as well. My feeling is that a lot of games, perhaps the vast majority of games are darker than they should be (or deliberately use dark scenarios), not just the Xbox 360 games mentioned. I always put this down to the need to hide poor textures, because the textures look washed out (comparatively) when you turn the brightness up.

I think for the shots with the enemy soldier, the 360 version looks the best, and the Wii version looks not just technically bad, but artistically lacking.

For the driving shots...are the 360 and ps3 versions even comparing the same area? The 360 version looks like a nighttime shot, whereas the ps3 looks like early morning or perhaps a setting sun. The 360 shots are too dark to really make out anything though, and the Wii shots were taken in interlaced instead of progressive.

Yeah, this looks quite different. If this is the same scene, then this is evidence of that developer statement about much better lighting and shadowing in the PS3 version...

Btw. the only thing that these closeup shots prove is that the PS3 version runs in full 720p whereas the Xbox 360 runs far below that (@ 1024x576), as was stated by some website in the other thread.

Funny, the PS3 version looks consitently more blurry to my eyes.

From what I can see, based on videos and shots, apart from the colour clipping issues the PS3 and 360 versions of CoD3 are technically identical.

How would the screen shots show what res it is running at? The 360's scaler is capable of hitting just about any res, so screen grabs would be at whatever resolution the 360's scaler is set to.

I guess you can tell buy the aliasing, in this shot

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2006/310/reviews/928655_20061107_screen002.jpg

the jaggies look to be 1 pixel in size, if the shot was scaled down the jaggies would be less then one pixel

but it's still kinda hard to tell since there seems to be some type of multi sampling, but the sampling looks the same on the PS3 shots, and the jaggies in the PS3 shot are 1 pixel also

To me the lighting looks more correct on the 360 though, since the guys back is to the light his face should have more of a silhouette effect like the 360 has, on the PS3 it looks like his face is lit

but I haven't played the game on either system and the only shots I have seen are the few that has been posted, so I don't know what else is going on in the scene
