[360] Mass Effect

game of the year is a freaking variable depending on what highly marketed game is released next.
That's because good games - especially those without an established fan base - aim to be released for the holiday season. You're pretty much guaranteed, then, that as the year goes by you keep seeing a new GOTY frontrunner.

Somewhat OT but I hate when games just make it in prior to the years end and suddenly pop up on the top of every game of the year list. Gears did this last year. What ever is most vivid in your mind is going to obviously overshadow other great titles. Personally i think there should be a cut off right about now to consider games rather than including the one you played just yesterday and experienced this "amazing section" so it MUST be in the list!

Practically all high profile games with big budgets that would be considered GOTY material regardless of date of release target late 3rd quarter or 4th quarter releases. 1st and 2nd quarter high profile releases are more times than not, the result of delays.

If you have a high profile title with tons of potential, then a release on the eve of the holiday season is strongly desired.

I have to say, I wasn't really interested in this game until I watched that combat sequence trailer and read Che's impressions. But I am kind of interested now. If the reviews are good, I'll likely drop $60 on this one too.

Seriously, is 2007 the best video game year ever? It's arguable that there are too many quality games.

I agree - this is the first year I can remember where there's more great games than time to play them all. The plus side is 2008 bargain bin romps should prove very valuable

The game is said to be 6.74GB, is that not close to a full disc?

We did get a sneak peek or the main screen on the dev kit and the size of the game is 6.74 GB – well within the contstraints of a dual layer DVD-9. When you see how huge this game is, you’ll see that even future iterations like Mass Effect 2 and 3 with their upgrades will not have a problem with disc space.

Yup, that is indeed very close to the usable disc space as iterated by the Gamefest slides.

On a side note, it'd be great if they planned on using a completed saved game to start off the sequels. They could use all the "Good/evil" choices you had already made in the preceding game and "build" the setting of the sequel. Contrast this to the dialogue choices early in SW: KotOR II that determined the state of the galaxy. If the sequels continue the adventures of Shepard, they could directly build around your existing character's stats. Perhaps it'd be a monumental task... but I suppose it would depend on how they set up the game and the saved game file; one would also have to account for new players with no existing profile for a previous game in the sequel's design.

From the TXB post:

To illustrate, let’s say you have a light side Jill Shepard and a dark side Jack Shepard. You play a point in the game as the light side character. You want to see how the same point would play out as a dark side character, all you do is change characters and replay the point. This is HUGE over only having the option to just replay the whole game again as “the other side.”
It seems like they already do track the good/evil choices... And that they are thinking about what I already wrote (just read it :p)

there seems to be a huge disparity in the quality of the rendering from these screenshots. lighting, texture and polycount are severly degraded in the lesser shots and looked very dull and underwhelming. are some of these cutscenes?
cutscene?

Different characters in different outfits in different environments. I don't see any disparity in the quality of rendering in those two screens.

I was just listenning to the IGN podcast about MA... My first reaction was that I should never have listened to that...
And now, I'm dying to play the game... I think that my social life will be dimminished to zero by the minute I have it in my hands...

Is really an issue to you guys mass effect being the goty or not?
will that make you buy a copy or not? It sure wont make me

About disc space i think most people make too much of a big deal out of it, if developers really need extra space (wich i dont think they do thats just ps3 propaganda) they'll add another dvd just like in blue dragon and there you go, you have an hddvd space to use.

Now i really belive that by the screenshots this game is going to beat crysis on graphics. (i might be daydreaming but anyway)
