[360] Forza Motorsport 3

I came away from this one with a very mixed feeling. It almost gives me a very arcade like vibe - it almost seems like the lovechild of a Sega Rally track mixed with a Ridge Racer 6/7 track. The track from the demo, while it has hints of the same kind of art style, definitely errs on the side of realism, but this track feels the opposite - this track looks like the latest and greatest racing game that you could find in the arcades, and somehow feels out of place because of it.

That said, if Forza 3 can shake it's moniker of being a sim, there's definitely room for the game to expand to a larger demographic with tracks like this

There's two more technical things I got out of this footage - considering the amount of polygon stepping I've seen, I don't think the game uses tesselation for the most part, although there might be sections where it does - but my first guess right now that at least in-game, it's not used. Second, the brake lights don't seem to be lights. They're just really flat and don't look particularly great - in fact, they stand out as one of the weakest bits of an otherwise mostly really good looking game. This is certainly a large step up from Forza 2, that's for sure.

I agree, it does look like Sega Rally. Turn 10 seems to deliberately go for a semi-realistic art style for some reason.

I think the tesselation is used mainly on car models to get the 10x number over F2. But perhaps they use it for the hills and rock terrain i've seen it on some of the other tracks.

lighting engines aren't nearly the same.

there are times when Sega Rally's trees are pretty flat with no variations in the lighting of textures, and there are times when they're overly saturated, and the game doesn't use HDR....there's a bit of a dif there.

i would have to say the trees are pretty similar to GRID's and maybe occasionally the lighting (though most of the time the lighting is VERY different) and not the cars (GRID's cars are very toned down on the polygons and reflections)

Jesus christ. Video 4 (2b) is fuckin amazing. Fuck....

yeah, it seems the vids are pretty good, VERY few games can yet match the detail and lighting as well as the fps forza3 has.

Oops, sorry I was thinking of Outrun not Sega Rally. Has a very similar look to the Amalfi Coast track.

not a single shot of that game reminds me of forza3.

.........and not even during gameplay.

Fujimo Kaido is a nice contrast to the Amalfi track in that the environment looks much more realistic. Same for New York.

Hmm, while some of the screens are great, some show the game looking very much like Forza 2. The inconsistency is somewhat worrying.

^ The Forza 2 pic is from the Photo mode too I guess

If you look at the aliasing, you will see it is probably realtime.

Anyway.
As I am now really interested in Forza 3 damage mode, I wanted to ask something.
People were claiming that Forza 2 already had realistic damage.
As I have only seen scratched paint in Forza 3, I was wondering what those people meant with 'realistic damage'. Can anybody supply a screenshot of forza 2 damage?
So I have an idea what turn 10 are improving upon in Forza3.

Also if there are movies/screens of Forza3, where there is damage other than scratched paint I would gladly see them!

Please don't get other games, like grid or burnout into this, I only want to see the forza 2 and 3 damage, no other games! No comparison! There are other ways to discuss comparisons but not here.

Can anyone tell if the video in the above link is with 'realistic damage' turned on? or is it only cosmetic damage?

in forza2 various peaces of the body falls off and the car gets dented up (nothing real excruciating, truth)

forza3 offers similar but adds a few like dents on the sealing of the car when you rollover and better reactions to when you hit other cars or obstacles. (only when you're going at high speed though, if you're going at 25 mph then no you're not going to see much, chances are you'll see a scratched up body)

Forza 2 had that much motion blur in realtime? I thought even Forza 3 didn't have much motion blur in realtime (IE - gameplay).

@ cops n rappers:

I have seen in the full game (forza 2) that all cars damage exactly the same, the 3d car model just changes as in a script. After heavy crashes, 2 cars (the same model) will look 100% the same, deformation wise. I am getting screengrabs as we speak

Are they not forced to have same damage model for all cars as no car manufacturer wants their car to get more trashed than competitors.

That could be the reason yes. But still, I found out Forza2 'damage' myself and never read about it anywhere, ever. You only read "wow it is really realistic".
2 cars facing eachother at 200 mph speed. Collision of 400 mph. Result: both cars get dented and scratched identical..

edit: here is an interesting observation:
It actually does depend on the individaul cars in Forza 2, some cars are allowed more damage than others. There are cars in forza where no matter how hard you try the bumpers wont fall off where some fall to bits in the slightest collision. It is not a technical issue but one of licsensing.

I dont think any of the cars only have scratched paintwork though, i think the minimum was scratched paint and slight crumpling of bonnet/boot/bumpers.

Does anybody know if Forza3 has this 'limitation' from the car manufacturers as well?
It could explain a lot, because I recall driving at 200mph into a wall, and have the bumber dent a little bit, plus scratches all over the car..

I dont remember anyone calling it realistic at all, just that it is better than its direct competition.

I thought when "realistic damage" was said is the fact that your car actually takes damage. To the suspension, transmission, engine, etc?
