I find it difficult to believe that the X360 can support more than 2 MMORPGs at a time. The available customer base is much smaller and much less diverse. And, if everything goes according to plan (as I understand it), each MMORPG will have its own monthly fee like a normal PC MMORPG. That's a new (and somewhat expensive) X360 Premium at $400, broadband at $20+/month depending on service and location, an XBL account at $?/month, and the game fees at $10-$15/month. That's some pricey fun. I'm sure there are people who are willing to pay it, but... I really have no way to finish that sentence. I don't think MMORPGs can be successful on a console that already has a subscription service for online play. Maybe just one. And then only if it's cheap to run and maintain.
If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to enlighten me.
Playing MMOs on the PC ain't cheaper. Instead of a $400 console you have a $1,000 PC that constantly needs upgrading. The only difference is Live, which of course is $50/yr I believe and works with all their games.
I believe, but don't quote me on this, that MMOs can be played without Live Gold.
Anyhow, the console user base is really large compared to the PC user base. It is quite diverse and I am sure there are gamers who would prefer to play WoW on the couch sipping a coke kicking back than at their PC.
If I was Sony/MS what I would worry about is MMOs making inroads on game sales. That $10-$15/mo adds up! At $15/mo, that means one less game every 4 months. Then again a super addictive MMO can get a lot of people to buy consoles--and if Sony/MS can start their own killer MMO *they* would be the one collecting the $15/mo.
There will always be gamers who shy away from MMOs (I am not an RPG fan, and further I cannot stand the idea of an excessive monthly fee just to play a game, and anything about $5 is excessive in my book!)
It does seem that there are a lot of MMOs in development and therefore they cannot all swim. Further, I have heard rumblings about bigger companies wanting to get residuals from their games (ahem, EA). IMO that would be the beginning of the end. $400 for a console, $50 for a controller, $60 for a game... and now you want charge me a monthly fee to play my games?!
Forget that!
