1up.com TGS Podcast #1

Eh..I dunno if you're not familiar with the guy or anything..

But theres a reason why he's known in his field as "Sony Bettenhausen"..and it's not because he takes the mick with anything (even though it does makes for more material on the 1up yours podcast).

Theres no use defending him, he's very out-of-the-closet, so to speak.

I'm perfectly aware of his reputation, and I think he is too. That's my point, really.

But like I said, discount what he had to say if you wish.

Sony IS hyping everything, why do you think they are (if they indeed plan it) to have another event? When an event is a month away and the media still don't have an exact date, during the most busy tme of the year for the game industry (with the msot titles releasing withing a span of two months) would it be logical to hold an event? IMO no.

Just because launch is a few weeks doesnt mean they are not focused on marketing, and an event like this is marketing. They need an event like this instead of just a press announcment, they need to show off the functionality of the PS3 and what to expect when we open the box weeks later. How is it not logical to openly inform the user on what they are buying? Cause of right now, many people dont have a clue on many things. They hardly are hyping this october thing, kaz said with a serious tone that this is not the last of the information. And that was that. If you dont think there wont be an information event, then thats fine, but its kinda pointless to think that they wont hold something to give out more information before launch. Because obviously they did not do so @ TGS.

The 1up Show for this week, their TGS special, is up now. Predictably it's of a remarkably different tone than the first post-keynote podcast. In fact, it's pretty literally a celebration of the PS3 showing there, with a bunch of different editors contributing this time.

Here's the link if anyone wants to watch:

I cannot seem to find the TGS special? The latest episode it lests me watch is the pre-TGS Nintendo Wii conference. Do I need to subscribe or something?

This is one of the reason's i never go to 1up anymore, both Mielky and Shane pretty much proved themselves ******s then of course there's Smith who pretty much rants on everything and is a ass ,

That asides, even if you wish to discount everything he said (which the others didn't seem pushed to disagree with on most occasions, it must be said)

Since Shane is a boob and an obvious troll/fanboi, lets flip the table:

You gonna take the stance that Trusty Bell looks like a DC title?

The fact that they've announced very few details is a bit worrying, IMO. They need to detail accessories, launch titles, and pricing so that retailers can make the shelf space and plan accordingly. This is not even for consumers; retailers need this information to be ready. October seems too late to be releasing this information (unless they're talking to retailers privately, in which case we'll probably hear leaks about it shortly).

Retailers are getting briefed by Sony at the end of this month is the word - probably right after TGS. They'l have all their info privately, and I'm sure we'll get it shortly thereafter. October is also the month when the major game stores are going to take their PS3 pre-orders as well.

Why are you taking up for this fool? He's an embaressment no matter where his allegiances lie.
Because he agrees with him.

Anyway saying that 1up is anti-Sony is the most ridiculous thing i've ever read.Anything that has to do with ziff media is 100% pro-sony and rightfully so,since having the publishing rights of the OPM is a huge deal.

So that podcast is "100% pro-sony"? Or the pre-TGS-1upshow is "100% pro-sony"? Was that your point?

Ziff is filled with Sony-inclined people..

But the 1up yours (podcast) cast is like this:

-Garnett (the host): An older guy who plays everything. Emotional.. sometimes says things on impulse (which he gets made fun of for), but knows his shit. Unbiased.
-John: Another older guy who actually ran OPM (or was it PSM..I forgot) for like 4 years. Knows his shit. Unbiased.
-Shane: EGM editor..knows his shit, but just so happens to be an out of the closet Sony fan-boy.
-Luke: Younger guy who plays everything, bashes everything comedically, but knows his shit. Unbiased (but loves to rip on Shanes ways)

They all are generally 'in tune' with the industry and they ALL rip anything they dislike about the industry/games/etc, but they also have great (and sometimes really informative) dialogues as well.

The reason the last podcast sounded 'anti sony' was because Shane talked a good deal of hype about TGS megatons and whatnot..then pulled a no-show on the podcast after Kutaragis thing.

And the reason the end of the 1up Show (video show) seemed so 'pro sony' is because Shane was the focal point and he was around people who don't give him shit about his P.D.A. for Sony.

But yeah, anyone whos been a listener of the 1up yours podcast knows that as a unit, the guys represent an excellent mix of unbiased opinions (even from Shane sometimes) and IMO, thats what makes that group of guys different and popular amongst other podcasts on Ziff.

Actually, there was a really nice post by littlebadwolf on 1UP recently that broke it down like this:

Garnett: American gamer. Likes PC FPS games and racing/sports games. Also plays some traditional JPRGs.

John: European gamer. Likes driving games and the 360 flavor of the month. Also plays trendy DS games (and soccer games I assume).

Luke: Young Casual Gamer. Loves Halo. Generally indifferent to most other games. Willing to play party games when drunk.

Shane: Hardcore Gamer. Likes games by Japanese developers, pretends to be a Sony ****** for entertainment value, but actually owns just about every system ever made.

Milky: Trendy Asian Gamer. Likes 3D fighters, music based games, Japanese night life, enduring pain, clubbing, online games, etc.

Mark: Old School Gamer? Don't know much about him, but he liked the PSP GnG game so he probably likes retro games with unforgiving controls.

Jeremy: Import Gamer. Likes original/quirky Japanese games and JRPGs. Also likes retro games and anime, but stays away from trendy stuff. Plays a lot of DS games.

I've been visting 1UP and listening to both the EGM and 1UP podcasts for a long time now and I have to say he is pretty much dead on.

You might think it's odd that they nicely fit into these niche catagories. And I think it's pretty obvious that they have intentionally have spun their public personas this way. I don't know if we have to go as far as to call it manufactured, but there is something very deliberate about it.

Everyone has a bias. And people identify with other people who views are closer to their own. I think the Ziff group is intentionally playing into this. Thats why they have their sony ****** guy, their hardcore 360 + Halo fan etc.

If everyone was just ballanced and sane it would be kind of boring. The best pod casts are the ones where their is some kind of rivailry or some sort of heated discussion going on. This is actually something they have flat out said on the 1UP pod cast - everyone agreeing with each other makes bad radio.

Why is the voice acting so bad? I mean the whole conversion doesn't sound natural, as if they are reading from a paper...IMO!

I think Shane does sort of dominate the video, and thus gives it a pro-Sony skew. But it doesn't matter how he says what he says - it's the filter we as intelligent beings can apply to it to bring it back down to Earth that makes the information contained valuable.

And in that context, whatever Shane's personal opinions, he seems to reflect a show that went *extremely* well for Sony in terms of Japanese public reaction. And, that of course is good for Sony.

.... - it's the filter we as intelligent beings can apply ....

ok XB, but that only applies to the 28% of people that actually have the intelligence to filter to him... (and say, what a moron, but, good show for sony).

The other 62% are running around with their eyes bulging out of their skulls spinning Shane induced console war rhetoric. ;)

Maybe he's not so wrong after all? I mean this show basically was a win-win situation for Sony, 100%. There really was nothing that put them in a worse situation this time (in contrast to E3), and on the other hand very little news about the 360 during TGS (as said by him, MS relys on Lost Planet ...).

And personally, must say i partly agree with him, especially the passage where he talks about the "look and feel of ps3 games". That's exactly what i thought when i watched all these new videos. PS3 games do look different. I mean bought a 360 last december, but i was never so impressed as by some of these titles now!

Shane could has been positive about PS3 without going with ****** wordings. I mean "xbox am cry" or Trusty Bell is a DC game i mean come on, leave this to gaf or other boards.
