1up.com TGS Podcast #1

From the lineup at TGS i think they are more than ready, the games look mature and seems to give way more real content than usual launch titles..

From the sound on the 1up podcast and other places around the net, sony still has a lot of work to do before the launch. I've seen more reports of many games not looking all that mature (framerate issues) with only a little over two months to go. As always games ready for launch are rushed, and this is no exception.

The Phil Harrison video at the top, Kaz confirms that there will be more events closer to launch (mainly in north america). To quote kaz..

Guess I was just making stuff up Qroach, eh? ;)

I didn't say you were making stuff up. I said "don't believe the hype". They also said PS3 would launch this spring. Phil Harrison, Kaz, and Kutagar have said lots of things that turned out to not be true. they've been getting people to play the waitng game while they prepare for the system launch. Anyway, I don't see why they would plan for some secret event without telling the media ahead of time exactly what date to expect it, specifically when it's a little over a month away. I can't see them focusing on some event so close to launch.

The 1up podcast was recorded when the impact of the keynote was still very fresh indeed in everyone's memory. Just looking at the games side, the editor who was in Japan only discussed a few games, but at least 2 or 3 he seemed to quite like. And he wasn't even at Sony event afterwards - their editors who were there were reportedly very impressed indeed with the content on display. From Shane Bettenhausen's blog, after noting that the keynote was perhaps one of the worst he's attended in his life:

In the meantime, keep an eye on 1up's TGS page for a spirited roundtable discussion with Sam, Scooter, Tommy B, and myself that we filmed after Sony's incredibly useful first-party hands-on event this evening. Anyone who has doubts about the PS3's power, its killer lineup, and its prospects might be surprised that we all came away with positive impressions of the PS3 lineup at TGS. I feel that Sony has really delivered here, and I'm not alone--nearly every journalist I spoke to today echoed my sentiments about the PS3.

He claims the general sentiment is on his side. Now I know he has a reputation for being a Sony fan, but I think he's at least a fair counter to, say, the always sarky Sony-scepticism of a Luke Smith (who seemed to be stoking the negativity surrounding the keynote in that podcast).

As for the general sentiment of others, I've read more good than bad. Some of the stuff out there from Gamepro and Kikizo, for example, generally summarising the Sony showing are almost gushing.

Regardless of the keynote, they talked specifically about a few games they did get to try out and the impressions weren't great on some of them. A few others they liked. Perhaps they will change their opinion, and are entitled to do that, but overall I've seen a wide range of impressions, wth lots of initial impressions being skewed toward the negative. It just depends where and what article you read. For instance i don't take anything written by game pro or kikizo seriously. Almost all gaming websites will write positive things in previews because they don't want to get shut out from other information released.

I pay more attention people that are more willing to just give thier opinion and not care what others think. I like the 1 up pod casts since they seem to give thier honest opinion 85% of the time. Also I like to read individuals comments on what they saw while at the show.

Well luke is pretty fair handed and doesn't seem to favour any specfic platform. I think he calls it like he sees it. Shane on the other hand is always slightly more skewed towards defending sony on 1 up shows. I mean they do joke about it and he even admits it (SDF and all). Like I said above, i'm not a big fan of the magazine/website articles because they usually hold back thier true opinions for various political reasons. I like the pod casts because they say something and can't take it back or have it re-written by the powers that be (without it sounding false or sensored).

Regardless of the keynote, they talked specifically about a few games they did get to try out and the impressions weren't great on some of them.

The only one that sticks out in my mind that he had concerns about was GTHD. He seemed himself to like what he saw of Motorstorm, DMC4, Lair. And just to clarify, this was only one guy - "they" doesn't enter into it, all the others were back in the US.

It must indeed, because I've gotten the opposite impression!

I don't think so, they've been plenty vocal on negative aspects to date. And the Gamepro article I'm thinking of, IIRC, makes a favourable comparison against 360, and the Kikizo article pulled no punches as far as the keynote was concerned, so I don't think either is too concerned about being politically correct or caring what certain people think.

TBH, Luke doesn't seem to like anything

Did you watch the video? Nobody is hyping anything up, they basically told the media to expect an event closer to launch in north america at the end of october. Nobody said anything about a huge event or anything like that. Im not sure what lines you are trying to read between but its simply stated right there, that this wont be the last of the information. Even nintendo has said they plan to give out more information closer to launch. Do you honestly think they will launch the system without telling us details like how much a controller costs? lol

Well he had concerns about GTHD, the animations in the new metal gear beng the same as last gen, he said motorstorm looked good but of course didn't look like the original unveiling video... mentioned eissues with the motion sensing that develoeprs were having (i.e turnng the sensitivity down) ...

I see this all the time. Previews are usually never specific on details and gloss over problems with the mantra "there's still some development time to address these issues". sony isn't goign to care if any magazine says the speech/conference sucked, but if they say allt eh games looked horrible, then they (SONY) would have a problem.

No he likes stuff but he's pretty fair handed in that he doesn't automaticallyt like something because it comes out for a certain platform.

Sony IS hyping everything, why do you think they are (if they indeed plan it) to have another event? When an event is a month away and the media still don't have an exact date, during the most busy tme of the year for the game industry (with the msot titles releasing withing a span of two months) would it be logical to hold an event? IMO no.

I didn't say anything about a "Huge" event, now YOU are readling between the lines.

Nintendo has the planned spaceworld event. Anyway i'm saying this doesn't make sense imo. You don't need a press conference or show of some sort to annouce the price of a controller. Think the idea was they would show more software in a finished state. however I don't beleiv ethey will do ths. don't beleive they held much if anything from the TGS show, just to be shown shorlty before launch.

It was the other dude talking about Metal Gear. I think the consensus is that it's a great trailer regardless, ditto re. Motorstorm - it's gorgeous in its own right, and the guy in Tokyo went out of his way to reiterate that to the guy back at home who figured it wasn't anything special.

Of course Sony minds if people say their conference was a trainwreck. But you're right in that the games are more important, but I don't think these guys are simply saying things to be nice. You do often see the 'forgiving preview' with games, for sure, but in the instances I mentioned above, this was general commentary about the showing, not previews about specific games and how they could redeem themselves or whatnot. And even in specific previews I haven't actually seen too much of that.

If your point is that the games still have work to be done, then the answer is obviously that that is true. I don't think anyone would deny that, it's natural until the games are finished. You're going to have a variety of opinions on any subject, I'm just pointing that out, that the podcast posted here is not reflective of the tone I've seen applied to the lineup of games beyond the keynote, elsewhere (and, indeed, at 1up even).

These guys sound bitter, they've bagged on the 360 during launch and bagged on Wii last week. Certainly entertaining to hear their POV however.

This wasn't actually a conference though, but a speech on the future of gaming on the PS3. The today part is on the show floor. Right?

The 1up Show for this week, their TGS special, is up now. Predictably it's of a remarkably different tone than the first post-keynote podcast. In fact, it's pretty literally a celebration of the PS3 showing there, with a bunch of different editors contributing this time.

Here's the link if anyone wants to watch:

Yeah, 1up (rather the 1up show cast) gets some flack that they are a little 'ainti-sony' but in reality its just a few honest guys and one visibly pro-sony guy (Shane)..and they give Shane shit for it.

I watched the show and Shane is delirious for sure..

-Trusty bell looks like a Dreamcast game (and noone really cares)?
-Lost Odyssey art really bad.. (He said Lord of the rings meets 'regular people')?
-The guy says "xbots am cry" and S.D.F. ('sony defense force') victory..???

The guy is straight off the gamespot forums or something.

BAH, I couldn't watch any more after Shane said Trusty Bell is a Dreamcast game.

I don't think people should be sensitive to that..he's pretty obviously taking the mick with it. If anyone is offended by that, they need to lift their heads out of 'message board politics', for want of a better phrase, and realise how ridiculous memes like that are.

That asides, even if you wish to discount everything he said (which the others didn't seem pushed to disagree with on most occasions, it must be said), the impression left by the others is still worlds apart from that first keynote-reaction show. In fact I thought some of the stronger comments in the final roundtable weren't made by either Shane or the OPM guys, tbh. (Not that I think the OPM guys should be discounted, either, as some of their rather public comments in the recent past indicate).

Good god this guy is ridiculous. Isn't this the same guy that said RE5 would be announced PS3 eclusive at TGS? He needs to be called out on all his bullshit.

Why are you taking up for this fool? He's an embaressment no matter where his allegiances lie.

Eh..I dunno if you're not familiar with the guy or anything..

But theres a reason why he's known in his field as "Sony Bettenhausen"..and it's not because he takes the mick with anything (even though it does makes for more material on the 1up yours podcast).

Theres no use defending him, he's very out-of-the-closet, so to speak.
