Quantum Break [XO] (by Remedy) *large images*

Nice, I was correct in both no. frames used and the temporal reconstruction aa. That also explains the soft look in motion

So will all those who called Shadowfall's 1080P technique the same as real 1080 do the same here??

Anyways I dont know what the heck it means but hey, it's something better than normal 720 I guess. I'll take it.

Although isn't 720P 4XMSAA kinda =better than 1080 anyway?? So why "reconstruct from 4 720P 4XMSAA frames"?

What do you guys think I should call it on my resolution chalkboard?

I guess since I called KZ:SF 960X1080, maybe the fair thing is slot it as 720P (with an asterisk)?

Or make new "unknown/multi resolution" category

Its interesting that they are using 4xMSAA on the image as well as the temporal reconstruction. So as opposed to Smaa with a temporal element you get 4 720p frames with 4x MSAA reconstructed into 1080p?

I've posted this in the DF thread:

1st frame after camera stops moving

few frames with no camera movement

In motion http://abload.de/img/qb80s3d.gif

Same scene, another example

First frame after camera stops moving completely: http://abload.de/img/23yakz0.jpg
Few frames stationary: http://abload.de/img/24t8js5.jpg

From the second example one easy place to spot the difference is this

I don't think it matters in the end. Sure the game has a soft look, but it isnt full of horrible sub pixel shimmer and stair steps.
The main drawback of the technique seems to be the ghosting. I'm Impressed with the look of the game as I always have been.

technically, the higher the frame rate the less noticeable the ghost would be correct? Since a 60 fps games swap frame fast enough it become not very noticeable.

glad yo uget the pc version with the xbox one version. The game seems like a lot of fun , can't wait to play it.

Now that i have some time and i watched a lot from the non-embargoed footage i'll share my honest opinion on the technical aspects of the game, feel free to disagree as this is just my opinion on the matter :p

What i liked
  • Dynamic lighting and GI: It enables Remedy to do some truly unique things within the game like the gamescom demo scene, or the cafeteria scene which looks great (going from complete dark to the whole place being lit dynamically) and i'm sure we'll see more cool things before the credits roll :)
  • Character models: Very detailed and well shaded/textured, and they remain pretty detailed even during gameplay: Jacks gameplay model, also very accurate to the actors that play these characters
  • AO: Although it can create some nasty looking artifacts sometimes: Example 1 - Example 2 It is generally very accurate and gives the environment a great sense of depth, i really like it. Examples: Example 1 - Example 2 - Example 3
  • Facial capture anims in cutscenes: A generational leap over Alan Wake and overall just excellent animation throughout all cutscenes. For me, great animation (and acting) succeeds when you are able to tell what the character is feeling/thinking without them talking about it and Quantum Break does that perfectly imo.
  • IQ: Believe it or not i actually quite like the end result, while it's soft it's also temporally stable and the end result gives the game a filmic quality, like i said numerous times in other threads i'll take a temporally stable result over sharpness any time of the day (games like The Division, Uncharted 4, The Order, Battlefront on PC with TAA and the list goes on)
  • VFX in general: The time manipulation effects are absolutely fantastic, as are the explosions and most effects in the game. Each one feels like it has a character (special color, sound associated with it) and feels unique instead of feeling more of the same. Also the geometry morphing thing they are doing looks so damn good, gives a little extra punch to the already great looking VFX
  • Physics and destruction: Many things within the game are affected by your time powers and it seems like most objects in the game are interactive (even stuff like the mustard), the library scene is also a great showcase of many objects interacting realistically within the game world
What i didn't like
Not sure if i forgot anything but these are my thoughts. I feel like it's one of the most technically accomplished games we'll see in 2016 and will most probably have some unique and memorable moments (much like Alan Wake) but the errors are quite visible on the X1 version. On the PC side i expect a very perf heavy game if they try to push all these effects at higher res. In any case, i'll be there day 1 on PC, not missing this :yep2:

Edit: I also understand that Remedy isn't a huge team and they have time/budget constraints, so maybe some of these issues couldn't be solved anyway.

Edit #2: I did forget something and that is my main gripe with the game, walking/contextual animations during gameplay. I already said that i believe the cutscene animations to be of the highest quality available on any platform and that only makes the difference more obvious. Some examples: Webm example of walking anim - Webm example of climbing anim and these are from the main character.

I think that's it, tried to post something more substantial than the typical "wow this totally sucks worst looking game ever" or "this is the next-gen we've been waiting for this is the best"

So let's get this straight the game has looked really impressive when shown previously, a few weeks before release the PC version was officially outed, and the xbox one version is not as good looking as what we were previously lead to believe.

Surprised I am not. At least we know the pc version looks good...

Hmmm no let's not re-write history please. The game has always looked exactly like it does now and many people have always commented on the softness of the IQ and other LOD shortcomings. The PC version has never been publicly shown before the latest preview events 2 weeks ago and nobody outside of the press attending has seen it. As a matter of fact the PC version hasn't gone gold yet! What happened is the following:

- Wow game looks good. But IQ is strangely soft.
- Wow Remedy are wizards! Can't believe they are achieving all these effects, GI etc on an Xone
- PC version is announced: Damn the PC version will look insane if this is how it already looks on Xbox.
- DF article about them not having a clue what and how things are being rendered..but 720P! Or 900P?! We don't know..but lets get some traffic.
- QB looks like shit! Ah Remedy are lame blablabla..
- THE INTERNET

I think what threw me and probably others was that presentation that stated it was 1080.

Just common sense (extremely high level of graphics, Remedy history) and the softness hinted it was TGTBT, but we took it at face value.

If you look at my past posts, pre presentation, I always expected the game to be 720P.

Now at least we get some nebulous "720P+". At least it softens the blow a bit. I'm fairly jazzed for the title again all things considered, and unlike The Division it's a certain buy!

I was never a huge Alan Wake fan, in fact I found it terribly boring. This doesn't look the same though, looks straight action. The type of game to play with room darkened and 5.1 turned up!

Also with preorder I can then toss the free PC code to my bro...

Might have to eventually repurchase it on Xbone Ultra for the possibly 4k version of this, but for now 720p+ would have to do.

Yeah that's not all how any of this went.
The game had only been shown running on Xbox one hardware until a recent press preview. The IQ of the game hasn't changed one damn bit since the first official demo. No one could pixel count the title properly. The DF article stating it was 720p is what changed peoples opinion unfortunately.

The game looks the same it always has except for the changes in character models and more sever detail culling.
So please I'm sure everyone knows this game will look better on PC because you can throw a lot of power at it, but don't try and imply that Remedy or Ms pulled a bait and switch on us. You have no evidence or any grounds for that accusation.

No mention of AA, wondering if they have temporal reconstruction as standard.
