Sony Press Conference 2011

Well there was a Pre E3 XIII-2 trailer mashup released so it's apparently making an appearance. Even if Versus and type-0 aren't

Meh. . .no PS3 os updates - what about better media support? How about a decent media player? An updated web browser? Cloud integration that is actually worth paying for PSN+? How about the death of locked saves? How about fixing the store to include patches with downloads? The "welcome back" freebies should have made it obvious how broken Sony's patch system is to everyone downloading SDHD (260MB download + 260MB patch?) I am punished for having two PS3s (can't even copy a download from machine to the other, I have burn up my UBB allottment to do so). How about making the OS actually responsive (cache the bloody icons already)?

Their conference was basically games we already know about plus too much about a who cares handheld doomed in a market that only cares about phones and tablets.

I expect Nintendo to wipe the floor with both MS and Sony tomorrow which seems bizarro world.

IMHO of course.

Cheers

To me, all of your gripes add up to one legitimate gripe (web browser). It already has the best standalone media capabilities of any console. The OS is very responsive. The cloud integration was the final nail that made me purchase PS+.

Well, there are two more major events. There is plenty of time to reveal things for this year and the next.

IMHO, of course.

The only media related news are:
* CinemaNow coming this fall
* PS3 is the most popular NetFlix client (contribute to NetFlix's 30% traffic) since it's "free"

Web browser update -- *if* you believe jeff_rigby's posts -- won't come before fall this year.

What icon caches are you referring to ?

I think patch system can already take delta changes (like firmware update). But their release packaging is too primitive.

There are new exclusive games we haven't heard about. Indeed Nintendo should have interesting hardware and software to showcase tomorrow !

Most amazing is still Uncharted 3. It is ungodly.

This isn't Sony's fault but it is also pretty awful. The most common one limits each genre to 75 titles max, no queue for Canada, no complete genre list and suffers general unresponsiveness (check Netflix's Facebook site to see plenty of complaints). Netflix also accepts far too much disruption in their cloud services - this last month I have probably had "top picks" show up less than 40% of the time and have experienced multiple Netflix outages. That said, I would have loved to have had Sony offer something to compete along similar lines (a video Qriocity). The existing PSN video store sells stuff at porn prices and almost seems like it was designed to encourage piracy (crazily priced, restrictive DRM, no extras, dubbed anime, etc.)

What icon caches are you referring to ?

I am referring to the lack of them. Every time you enter the XMB you are locked to spinning recycle symbols for menu items until the OS finally loads the icons. This is compounded by the fact that despite knowing that an entry is there, it will not let you choose a menu entry until the icon loads. This happens on both my PS3s so I am having to assume it is poor OS implementation and not a drive issue.

The MP3 lister has the same behaviour as it reads in the song database. All around the PS3 is abysmal as an music player, more so if you have more than a handful of files on it. On the music player front, you can list by album except it doesn't show the artist so unless you have memorized every album title in a large collection, good luck finding anything. I so regret copying a large number of MP3s onto one of my PS3s as the more files you have, the harder the system is to use. The PS3 seems optimized to at most about 10 to 20 albums.

I think patch system can already take delta changes (like firmware update). But their release packaging is too primitive.

I'll say. When I download a 200+MB game and then immediately have to download the same game again as a patch, something is seriously messed up.

Yes the console life is hard when the complaints are so tiny :)

250€ for the psv is really an attractive price.
I missed the conf, when thesystem is to be released?

>_> The Vita, of course. I wanted a trophy. >_> (no photos of it were allowed)

5 games, 4 minutes each

Uncharted - seems to kind of play itself in the platforming sections. *shrug* Has the artstyle of UC2.. but the environment lighting looks really off. Quite a bit of shimmering in textures, inconsistent AA (just like the PS3 iterations). It's... uncharted gameplay otherwise.

Virtua Tennis 4 - pretty solid 4xAA and 60fps. Probably the easiest game to pick up and play with the touch screen (move left/right, serve, hit etc)

LBP - took a little getting used to considering they use all the functions. Six-axis, touch screen, buttons, and right bumper. Pretty nice looking.

Soundshapes - I quite enjoyed making my own beats... not bad for 1 minute. :p Drums, bass guitar, some piano. I picked some difficult stage, but it was pretty fun. Roll the gear around to hit/collect the beats/sounds. It gets more difficult with platforming and sticking to different surfaces whilst avoiding the laser or other deadly obstacles. More of a flash-type game (the demo-guy's words *ahem*)

Little Deviants - several games in one. I liked the one where you press the touch pad to manipulate the terrain to get the marble down the hole. Another one was hitting the gopher (front touch or rear touch pad depending on how the gopher shows up or just don't hit the civilian). Another game was using six-axis to direct a falling piece to collect things (increasingly difficult obstacle course). The last game (or should I say first...) used the camera to take some real-world object as reference, then you physically move the vita around to look for targets to shoot.

I think Vita is going to be a much bigger success than people expect.
I think you're right, though only because expectations are so low! :p

Meh. . .no PS3 os updates
Yeah, I'm in agreement. It's just games, rather than extending the platform. For a machine that "only does everything," the coverage was very one sided. That said, with a limited time limit I suppose that had to focus on one area. But they should have better service (voice chat), new browser, etc. to offer. I feel Sony are winding down PS3 progression.

Both Sorcery and Last Guardian are quiet.
Last Guardian has had a bit of media coverage of late, so that's understandable. Sorcery was supposed to be out already, a major title making the most of Move's immersiveness, and yet it's a complete blank. I am really pleased I staved off getting Move, as it's not offering me anything at the moment.

Will have to check out some vids now...

My PS3 begun to load slowly my icons as well and some of my games that were located on the HDD or had HDD installations were having some problems. I searched over the internet and found that there is some kind of safe mode you can access that fixes the file allocation in the HDD. Probably something like a defrag. Didnt have that issue after that

PSVita Day 1 :) Not sure which yet or what games to get. Nothing spectacular that's original.

Looking forward to that Medieval Moves from SC dev. Hope it supports dual motion control, I reckon that's the best way for Move. But yeah Move support is lacking, I guess this is more PS Vita announcement.

Seems to me that the PS3 "addons" lost steam around the same time the Security Flaws turned up.

To much energy wasted on fighting pirates?

Uncharted - seems to kind of play itself in the platforming sections.

When has Uncharted ever not played itself during platforming sections? It's pretty much my only gripe with an otherwise phenomenal game series. A jump over a seemingly bottomless chasm should feel threatening and dangerous, instead it feels relaxing or even a little boring.

LBP2 will be getting the Move support this September :D
I've pretty much given up on LBP now. My latest movie receives rave reviews from the people who play it or watch it, yet it's only had 25 plays. As a creative medium the work:reward ratio just isn't there for anyone who doesn't break into the 'big league' of recognition. That also negatively impacts my enjoyment of other people's creations, so I prefer to find entertainment in other titles. For me personally, Move support in LBP2 comes too late.

I think it is very obvious that they are focussing primarily on Vita right now. That is a major milestone for them, and I think they realise that they need to get the SDK and OS stuff ready earlier rather than later this time, but as they haven't been ready to show some of that yet and have expressed concerns at GDC (where they talked about near c.s. in more detail than at E3) that they wouldn't have all of these features ready at launch.

I already predicted back then that once they got stuff working and working well with Vita, they will decide whether or not they can update the PS3 to match Vita, but stuff like cross game voice chat is comparatively more easy to get working with Vita as they have it ready at launch and can mandate the required support from games or abstract it in the OS, where for PS3 that may simply not be possible at this stage.

I think though it may still be worth it for them to give it a try. They are showing some promising stuff with the synergy between Vita and PS3, and that's only going to be worth it if you expect the average consumer to benefit from that a few years at least. In that case, harmonising features if possible on both is definitely going to be a big plus. So I do expect they will at least try to harmonise some features, like the score notifications and jumping into the games from there. But they may not manage it, or it may become an optional feature.

NetFlix is special because they support both Blu-ray and streaming. ^_^
It's clearly the most used streaming service on my friend's list.

I don't subscribe to NetFlix streaming though. My household use their Blu-ray rental service and subscribe to Hulu Plus instead. Much better UI !

I'll say. When I download a 200+MB game and then immediately have to download the same game again as a patch, something is seriously messed up.

Yap. When I launched GT5 after a hiatus... I had to wait for 30 minutes for multiple updates.

There is an optional PS3 firmware update yesterday (v3.65 I think). ^_^
I doubt they have wind down PS3 updates. They will want to strengthen Vita and PS3 tie to compete with Nintendo's new system.

The easiest way to do this is to provide more APIs for developers to make say... Live Area in their PS3 games. Their APIs have been opt-in by developers anyway instead of built into XMB itself.

... which is why I hope they generalize LBP for Internet exports and publishing. I'd love to have my kid make an interactive LBP greeting card to send to my friends and relatives !

It doesn't matter if only 27 human play the level if they are the most important 27 people to him/me.

LBP on Vita looks ideal. That looked fabulous as a creative tool and it can provide many of the mobile minigame experiences that people are used to from apps. I won't be spending or more blood, sweat, and tears on it though!

Yes ! I really really hope they don't stop at the current LBP formula. It seems that LBP Vita can be a great science/lab tool with so many Vita sensors and outdoor opportunities !

Compared to the 3DS, about how much more powerful is the PSV? 3DS is more powerful than the PSP which was about PS2 quality graphics and the PSV apparently capable of around Xbox 1 level graphics according to Eurogamer. The problem is I don't see how that will really give them the edge over a 3DS that's at the same price point. The PSP was an entire generation ahead of the DS but eventually the DS won still.

I can see Sony trying to make PSV a serious general media platform which would make it compete with smartphones and tablets. It's graphics chip is the same as the one in the iPad 2 but it has double the number of cores so it could have the best mobile graphics for quite a while but then it's also less than half the price of an iPad and can fit in your pocket so there's a lot of advantages. I hope that Sony is aggressive in integrating netflix/hulu/etc if they want to go down that path.
