XNA and DirectX beeing phased out?

Came across this article:
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/389018/microsoft-email-confirms-plan-to-cease-xna-support/

From what I can read I assume that MS will cease to support Direct X and XNA in April 1, 2014. XNA/DirectX will be fully retired from the MVP Award Program.

Clearly there are several alternatives for XNA, even other free similar ones.
So that don't matter too much for me..

But Direct X is abit more strange, OpenGL is really currently the only alternative, isn't it?
I assume that the software will be used longer, even tough support for it dissepear, but in the long run, how will this affect me as a PC-gamer? And what will it mean for the developing comunities?

edit: I know it's just a rumour based on a supposed leak, at this point.
And the DirectX stuff, kind of drove the credibilty in the drain.. However in theory, could this happen?.
