Did you spend less? And you facillitated this sharing with physical media? The act of sharing didnt compel you to invest less but spent in a way that benefited the group as a whole. When u share under a share plan like One's potential system with very liberal sharing policies each dollar invested is potentially 10X more effective in providing content depending on your buddies, each is making equal contribution and the size of your club.
Some months we spent less, some months we bought more games than we otherwise could. We used to be quite careful with out purchases, rarely buying any game that didn't at least get a Zzap!64 'sizzler' rating, but preferably 'Gold medal' ratings. But since we liked cinema as well and money was tight, we balanced it.

I'm still not sure MS is going it alone. With that RFID patent, Sony could easily do everything they just promised while still allowing publishers to take a fee on a disc going to a new user.

Sony is trading long term profitability for early adopters. I don't think that's a good direction, giving up significant revenue streams that would've been nearly free. They really want core gamers to flock to the PS4, as if they have little trust in other ways to reach the mass market.

I think PSN+ needed for online takes care of that.

Seems Sony stood up to the publishers and basically said "CAN IT", however my guess is that they'll just entice people into downloading digital versions (which can't be resold anyway).

Besides, there's already plenty of data to show that people actually end up preferring digital to physical copies anyway. Just look at the fact that 60% of all Vita games are sold digitally (announced tonight). Convenience of downloading games at home as a carrot will beat out used games DRM as a stick.

Yep, over a 5 year period, there should be enough revenue from PS+ to take off some of the potential losses of the PS4 being priced at $399.

MS is still going to be ahead in profits.

I understand that as a gamer, all people see is that PS4 is cheaper to buy and cheaper to own now. But this will cost Sony in the long run, significantly, so they must have a really big reason for it, because such large corporations aren't altruistic in my experience.

My guess is that they want to completely route the Xbox One for PS2 v. Xbox Classic style domination. Question is whether people will still be interested enough in Xbox One exclusives to still buy the box.

At the very least, even if consoles end up selling similar units, I expect Sony to have the upper hand in 3rd party sales (where the real money comes from). That's the coup that Microsoft won this gen in the US, and for most gamers that have both an Xbox 360 and PS3, most still buy 3rd party games on the 360.
