Xbox Live and "STRICT NAT"

I was beating myself over the head with the strict NAT issue with my Netgear 824 router. I finally got around it by purchasing a D-Link DGL-4300. Works great and already has a preset for Xbox Live.

another xbox networking issue...help?

My Linksys (ethernet, not wireless) router connects to Live no problemo. My computer also connects to the internet via the router no problemo. But Xbox media extender in my pc does not recognize the xbox. First it wouldn't work because of my firewall (mcafee), which, as instructed in the troubleshooting site, I permitted all indicated the media extender applications to go through the firewall (this still didn't work, so now I disabled the firewall altogether--that seems to have eliminated the firewall issue). After doing that, the software says it can't find the xbox360 and says I check the cable connections and/or firewall. The connections are fine because Live and the PC are both working just via the same router and there is no firewall engaged at all anymore. WTF is up? For all this aggravation, I'm not even sure the media extender is worth it, but it would be nice to control audio in my pc via the xbox. Anyone run into this issue before I spend six hours on the phone with Dell in India? :/

update - nevermind

Well, I bought a wireless linksys router (which I needed anyway), even though it's still hardwired to the 360, it now works like a charm. Pretty sure it was the hardware firewall in the other router causing the problem. Though the wireless supposedly has the same firewall built in, go figure.

Now that it actually works, I have to say Windows Media extender is one impressive piece of software, although napster radio for some odd reason isn't working, otherwise it works seamlessly with my WMC PC for audio, video, photo and some other apps I doubt I'll use. The audio functions in particular are great--it works seamlessly with my stereo, it's user friendly and all digital. I think it may the 360 ultimately be more useful to me as an entertainment system than the 360 itself as a gaming system, I also was able to toss out my old very dated DVD player and CD player. Definitely one thing PS3 may be unable to match is the PC integration that 360 seems to have pulled off. Definitely one way M$ is leveraging windows, that actually, my God, works (ok after a day or two of headaches--making the network thing idiot proof is something they need to work on if they ever want the soccer moms to adopt such a system so I wonder how many people actually use it). Time will tell...

Problem fixed

I took the advise of the guy who said to put xbox in dmz zone and it fixed all my problems the only way i could get an open nat was if i plugged my modem directly into my 360 but now i have added my 360 ip to the dmz zone it open thank the heavens

Hi everybody.

I know the strict nat problem is a worldwide common issue when connecting with xbox live, and I'm getting quite desperate, so here i come...

My local network composes of two computers (One of them is a P3 machine with WinXP/Linux and the other one is an iMac G5), a Thompson Speedtouch 510i DSL router with the last firmware, an 8 port switch and the xbox 360.

The P3 connects to the router, the switch connects also to the router, and the iMac and the Xbox 360 connect to the switch.

Everything works fine, but the ***king xbox live

I always get the "STRICT NAT" status on my connection. There's nothing else I can do, apparently.

My router supports uPnP, and it is enabled. I also have routed the 53, 88 and 3074 ports in both UDP and TCP protocols to the statically asigned IP of the Xbox 360 (192.168.1.102)

I got "STRICT NAT" before, meanwhile and after opening those ports. Nothing changed.

I also disabled the router firewall. Nothing changed.

Everything I try to connect to some online race in PGR3, the "Could not connect to all users" (Or something like that) pops up. Its absolutely exasperating.

The only solution microsoft gaves me is to buy one of the several routers labeled as "Xbox live compatible". The problem is that as an "Strict NAT" user I can only connect to "Open NAT" users.

"Open NAT" users can connect with everybody. "Moderate NAT" ones can connect to both moderate and open, but strict ones can only connect to open ones.

Is there any kind of solution, like modifying some NAT rules on the router (I'd need also the way to do it on my own...) or opening some port I've missed????

Had the same problem when my internet service was upgraded. Finally found the problem was with my service provider. They had me runing behind a firewall from their end. Problem was corrected and NAT runs open.

ok, Ineed you guys help i have a strict nat so i can't play people (some people) on xbox live i can't talk to most my friends and im getting tired of it, im no computer expert so don't tell me aload of expert advive simply it down a tad im only 15! moving on to the issue it said on microsoft that ishould find a xbox live compatiable router but the router i have is i have the bt homehub how do i get a moderrate nat????? please help thanks

This freakin sucks

Okay so here's the deal,
I just got my xbox for x-mas
it works fine
EXCEPT
the FREAKING NAT DOESN'T WORK RIGHT
i have a moderate or strict nat, i can play games but it's really laggy, slow to get them and i can't play with my friends, i know everything is compatible, because when i use an ethernet cable i have an open connection but when i use my "Xbox live compatible" wireless adaptor my nat screws up, i could just use my regular cable but it's a serious tripping hazzard, and i don't want to have wasted my money on the wireless. Can you use small words and help me figure out what the heck to do?

Did you open the required ports?

Your wireless is getting a different IP address than when the cable is plugged in.

Manually set the IP address on the wireless adaptor that is not within the DHCP range of the router. You can modify this range on the router.

Then make sure the Xbox LIve ports are open and being forwarded to the IP address of the wireless adaptor.

Easy firs check is to put to IP address outside the DMZ. If that works, then start faffing around with the necessary ports.

If you a bit new to configuring your router, have a look at this site here. Just select your router and the application you're trying to set up and follow the step by step guide.

That said the culprit is most likely a changing IP address. Assign a fixed IP to your wifi adapter and everything should be fine (if you've already the appropriate ports for Xbox Live that is).
