Of course you have to ignore that fact the 360 had a price drop and the PS3 did not, but whatever works.
Excuses, excuses...
Sony could have easily dropped the price of the PS3 if they wanted... But they weren't willing to go THAT far into the red.
MS made a move to make the X360 more attractive, it worked. Sony didn't respond.
It's working well (or at least not hurting them as much) for Sony in Europe where there's a much more Playstation brand centric fanbase. But isn't working as well in the US where it appears that consumers couldn't care less about the brand.
Either way, blame Sony instead of the price. Or congratulate MS for the strategy.
But blaming price, when all console manufacturer's could price however they wish? That's just an excuse. So far for the past year, MS has just plain out executed Sony in the US. And still managed to stay even in a highly Playstation centric EU.
Then again, I'm sure if the PS3 was cheaper to manufacture or if Sony had deep cash reserves that they would have reacted to MS's price movements. But it's neither cheap to make nor do they have deep cash reserves.
