So not only does it look very average (at this point in development), it also "chuggs" along at low framerate?

Anyone here still believes that PGR3 video from the announcement was actual real-time, in-game footage?

By the sound of the IGN article anything with AA isn't realtime. Of course it should still be easy to add to still shots.

It's running on a dev kit which has a fraction of the power of the final console. What do you expect?

As with the majority of 360 and PS3 games shown at E3, I very much doubt the footage shown was 'real-time, in-game'.

Which leads me to a question, does anyone (including MS) have final 360 hardware? Heck, even components (the GPU portion, or CPU)?

Yes that is disturbing, considering that the launch is going to be in about 6 months, whereas Sony's devkits allready has Cell and 2x6800ultras which is quite close in terms of power to the final setup, makes me wonder how polished those X360 launch games are going to be, well maybe they have enough time. It seems that Sony atleast has plenty of time to develop a nice launch line-up.

Heh, seeing some of those videos they showed (which should really be the best they have, otherwise they wouldn't show them at all), i'm a bit worried.
PGR3 looked gorgeous but it's not clear it was realtime, GOW was choppy as hell, everything else looked very underwhelming. And they're launching in about 6 months.
They should start mass production soon enough, and they still haven't got the final hardware ready? Sounds fishy to me.

At this point they exist.

Timeline is looking similar to the original xbox launch.

Sony and MS seem to have diametrically opposed philosophies on this one, Sony push out very expensive early devkits in tiny numbers, MS ships a software platform to a large number of devs and waits until they can produce enough devkits to get them out in numbers.

Both have their plus points, personally I'd prefer a combination of both.

I think MS's real failure in this department is not getting closer to final kits to key developers in time for E3 (same thing happened with Xbox).

If they don't have a truly horrible E3 I doubt it will matter in the long run.

The benefits for waiting being that the kits are closer to the actual retail boxes?

I agree though, MS should have gotten final kits or at least more updated kits to the developers.

Just finished watching the xbox360 conference.

The most impressive thing was indeed the Live features.

So the edited out part was the Gates & Ballmer "comedy" feature.
Maybe they saw it as a bit too embarassing (which it was).

With the dreamcast didn't developers get final kits either the month before or the month after the japan launch ?

Apparently the next round of dev kits are going out in July and will have approx twice the power of the current setups, so ~66% of final hardware.

And I wouldn't worry about AA. MS stated at the press conf that all games are required to support AA. Which is no real surprise since the high-bandwidth eDRAM should provide some level of AA for "free".

Yeah, that was what got me eyes too the first time I viewed it. They were so obvious "pre-cheerers". The most embarassing thing in the show, if not counting the edited out Gates & Ballmer flick.

These paid wowwers kinda pull the carpet under the whole believability in my eyes, but maybe it's a more standard thing in America with big presentations

Maybe its standard and maybe it even works to some degree, but still I find it rather offending and stupid. I'm a fan of Microsofts product but I really disliked the hype in the show.

Does anybody have knowledge about the content of the edited Gates & Balmer flick and why it was edited out?

A little OT.
If I was to hook my next gen systems up to a VGA monitor, would the games be displayed in wide-screen?
Would I be able to display them in the normal 4:3 format since VGA monitors are able to achieve their full resolution in 4:3?

It'll either be software selectable (4:£, 16:9 aspect ratio) or it'll be hard coded into the game. Some PS2 games allow you to choose between 4:3 and widescreen, and some like the PAL version of FFX are widescreen regardless
