Xbox 360 Demos (new)

NHL 08 after a couple of quarters of play...

...definitely much smoother than 07, frame rate is excellent (60fps), graphics look good but I was hoping for more stick control on Defense but it's not bad. game plays very nice but I'm not much good at going into game play specifics for Hockey.

didn't play 07 very much last year so can't help give much comparison feedback. (kept 2k7 and dumped 07 due to frame rate) Puck physics seem improved (kicking off of skates) and CPU scored on a nice wrist shot (no trickle in). Have not got the deke move down yet.

the demo is set to PRO (can not change) and you can change to any camera angle. Also nice is that they let you select rematch at the end so you can keep replaying the demo without quitting

just played the timeshift demo and I was VERY surprised.

it's actually pretty fun. it has a lot of unique ideas.

it's not like normal fps's, it's like prince of persia: SOT meets gears of war meets F.E.A.R.

the gameplay actually works together really well (never felt the time powers were too powerful). I like how you can choose between rewinding, pausing, and fastforwarding time. the weapons are really satisfying, especially the crossbow that shoots an explosive (which I think is directly ripped out of gears). it basically takes a whole bunch of ideas in other games, adds it's own style, and is pretty fun.

I hadn't downloaded any demos in a while, so I just queued about a half dozen up

Madden 08, NHL 08, Timesplitters, Call of Juarez, Blazing Angels 2, and MOH Airborne.

The sports game I'll barely check out as I dont play sports games much, but I do like to see how they're progressing each year.

Anyway, the first one I've played is Timesplitters. I'm with Nintenho, it's surprisingly good. The time powers are a nice different touch and the guns are nice hefty and feel powerful, so just basically fun. The demo is also lengthy by demo standards, something I wish more demos would do.

However, it's still a second tier game, while some of the graphics are nice some like the bombed out buildings are second tier. There's also a bit of tearing, even though plenty of games look better.

The problem with this game is I dont know who would buy it with games like Assasins Creed, Mass Effect, COD4, and Halo 3 coming out.

Maybe it would do better in spring with less big releases around it. It's not a bad game, just not good enough.

They ported Timesplitters to the 360?! :)

wow EA Sports has really stepped up NHL 08 is a great hockey game

can't stop playing it

oh and skate too.... EA is making some good looking/playing games this Gen.

I used to think all their stuff was drivel but they are stepping up the quality IMO. they have some of the best lighting of next gen games so far IMO.

skate demo had the kids enthralled for hours last night. graphics are great and intuitive game controls (whole game can be played with only left stick/right stick and triggers) allow for a fun time. I see this being a sleeper hit.

just for fun here's a trailer of the wipe outs

Bunch of demo impressions:

Madden 08:
Looks good and plays very smooth. The 60fps seems to help with the gameplay. Animation looks fluid and smooth. I like the player chatter after plays. Nice effect. I stopped playing Madden many years ago so the learning curve is too great now.

Call of Juarez:
Garbage. Forget $60. Not even worth 20. I can't say one positive thing about it!

MoH:
I'm sick of having to use WWII guns. Really sick of it. The game seems cool that aspect is such a turn off. Couldn't finish the demo.

Tiger Woods 08:
I'm not a golfer so clealy this wouldn't appeal to me. Visually, there was nothing cool or wow about it.

Timeshift:
Outside of Bioshock, best demo on Live for some time. If the reviews are favorable, picking this up for sure. The graphics, gameplay, atmosphere and sounds were all top notch!

when I first played this game I didn't really give it a chance but then I played it again and apparently it's pretty technical. you do a mistake and you'll lose. very arcadey but you still have have a lot of skill to pull off the turns right. the graphics are really good but I can't tell if they're 60 fps.

Flat out:

Garbage. Unless you masturbate to destruction derbies, stay the hell away from this. Some of these companies need to realize that people are paying 60 damn dollars for this stuff! The graphics are quite cartoony and the visible car damage isn't anything close to what you go through in the crashes. 4/10 for me.

you see that exactly what I thought until I spent some more time with it. I'm not saying it's a great game but it might be worth renting.

Flat Out...

lighting and graphics in general are pretty sweet and the destructible environments were fun as hell ...

but hey... I like arcade racing and I like crashing stuff... the racing was fine for an arcade racer and parts of it look better than DiRT

Also revisited Timeshift... graphics are insanely good some of the best lighting I've seen and the effects and explosions (Crossbow explodes bodies better than Gears of War)

Yeah, the single player demos for GRAW are gone, along with the Far Cry:predator - multiplayer only. Why?

I've been tracking Live Marketplace Demos in a spreadsheet every week as a comparison to the demos from Official Xbox Magazine. I wanted to see how many more demos Marketplace had over OXM. What I found out was that they're about the same except for the yearly sports titles(OXM has very few) and that Marketplace gets way earlier. But the other thing I found out was that Microsoft takes some demos off of Marketplace after a period of time. I'm not sure why either, but it does happen. That's one of the nice things about buying an OXM disc subscription. I have all my demos archived on a disc. The ones that aren't on a disc, I leave on my hard drive. BTW, OXM does get exclusives once in awhile, but a lot of the times they are timed. As of right now, there's only been a handful that have been exclusive indefinitely. But now that you've mentioned a few that are no longer available download, I'm going to go back and update the spreadsheet to see if maybe OXM has some more exclusives.

Wow, looks like depth of field effects are the new normal mapping,(Call of Juarez, Skate, Timeshift). I'm not complaining though. Personally, I think it's a great effect as long as it's not overdone. Skate in particular seems to make really good use of DOF.
