NPD September 2019

Oooof, heading into the Holiday season, video game spending continues to decline compared to last year.

This is yet another month that is dragging down 2019’s performance relative to 2018. And slowing hardware sales are the biggest reason for the drop.

Hardware spending is down a relatively massive 22% compared to last year.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but now that PS4 is consistently not the top selling console in NPD, they no longer mention which console sold the most.
  1. NBA 2K20
  2. Borderlands 3
  3. FIFA 20
  4. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening*
  5. Madden NFL 20
  6. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
  7. Gears 5^
  8. Code Vein
  9. NHL 20
  10. Mario Kart 8*
  11. Minecraft#
  12. Grand Theft Auto V
  13. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*
  14. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
  15. Red Dead Redemption II
  16. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege
  17. Plants vs Zombies: Battle For Neighborville
  18. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  19. Catherine
  20. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*
Gears 5 has a new symbol "^" denoting that it doesn't include Steam digital sales numbers. As well, it's a Gamepass title, so it's ranking isn't reflective of how many people played it.

Looks like PS4 is the worse off from a year to year standpoint.

“Dollar sales of tracked video game software declined 4% in September versus a year ago, to $732 million,” said Piscatella. “Growth in Switch and Xbox One software sales could not offset declines on PlayStation 4, which were driven by the comparable September 2018 release of Marvel’s Spider-Man.”

Compared to last year, software sales are still about par in 2019. But the money has shifted to Nintendo instead of Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Understandable since last year Marvel's Spider-Man released on Sept. 07.

Also, interesting that Nintendo is gaining a larger and larger chunk of software sales.

“Year-to-date dollar sales of tracked video game software are flat at $3.9 billion,’ said Piscatella. “Gains in sales of Nintendo Switch software have been offset by declines across all other platforms.”

That's expected as well as PS4 and XBO are on the downward slope of their sales trajectory while NSW sales still haven't peaked.

And to finish things off.

The 10 best-selling games of 2019 so far
  1. NBA 2K20
  2. Mortal Kombat 11
  3. Borderlands 3
  4. Madden NFL 20
  5. Kingdom Hearts III
  6. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
  7. Anthem
  8. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*
  9. Resident Evil 2 2019
  10. Grand Theft Auto V
Interesting that GTA V has sold more copies in 2019 than RDR 2. A large part of that is obviously the fact that GTA V is on PC while RDR 2 has yet to have a PC release.

The 10 best-selling games of the last 12 months
  1. Red Dead Redemption II
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII
  3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*
  4. NBA 2K20
  5. Mortal Kombat 11
  6. Borderlands 3
  7. Madden NFL 20
  8. NBA 2K19
  9. Battlefield V
  10. Kingdom Hearts III
But on the other hand, on the rolling 12 month chart, RDR 2 is selling better than COD: BO 3.

what do you mean? they mention it each month I think eg this month on twitter (Mat Piscatella from NPD)

Mat Piscatella
US NPD HW - Nintendo Switch was again the best-selling hardware platform of September and remains the best-selling platform of 2019.

If you want to start about conspiracies and NPD numbers, when was it NPD stopped the numbers? a couple of years ago or so, Now of the 3 companies Sony had then the least reason to stop the release of the numbers, or do you disagree

Part of that is because they release software results first and then a week or more later is the hardware results. Or at least that's what they said they were going to do.

Actually, NPD stopped publicly reporting numbers during the PS3/X360 timeframe.

Part of that is because they release software results first and then a week or more later is the hardware results. Or at least that's what they said they were going to do.

Ah, I'd forgotten that they had switched to doing that. I was used to seeing it reported at the same time as the software results.
