Nothing, absolutely nothing, will compete with Sony's marketting campaign...

PlayStation 3!

Actualy:

PlayStation 3

As the important thing for the mass is that it is a PlayStation and not a SomethingelseBox.

Yeah. Halo2 was a POS too(i actually love it, but alotta ppl trash it, and said that it wouldnt be "big"), well guess what the marketing campaign made it possibly the biggest pop culture phenomenon in the video game industry in recent years.
Now, think bigger with Xenon. I dont know why but i have a felling that xenon will be quite the success.
I think people are again underestimating the will and force of microsoft in this business.

In my contry (Portugal) people will either call it:

Xbox trezentos e secenta or Xbox três secenta- ;) hey it actually doesnt sound that bad lol-

Umm... the biggest pop culture phenomenon in video game industry??
I think that's exaggarating it quite a lot.
There was some hype at launch, most of it MS PR generated.
A "phenomenon" would be something that builds up naturally, just throwing money in advertising isn't enough.
Halo2 was good and succesful, but the hype did die very soon after the launch day news and general hullabaloobaloo.

Hey, thats how i see it, of course hype dies after sometimes, what did you guys expect?
You think those 24 hour record sales is Pr BS?
Come on, give credit where credit is due-.
Halo2 was kinda like Matrix Reloaded, some loved others hated it. But that didnt stoped it from being one of the most anticipated movies in recent years.
But hey, thats how i and people i know see it.
;)

"There was some hype at launch" some? Where were you? :?:
After Mgs2 halo2 was probably the most anticipated game in recent memory.

And like MGS2, Halo2 was a good game, not sure where u're getting the idea that it was a POS, apart from personal preferences.

Italian: trecentosessanta.
But no one would call Xbox 360 that way, everyone would switch to the shorter version 'tresessanta'.
Actually it sounds good, as it was a car... ;)

Hey maybe the name 360 refers to 3 cpu's prodcuing 60Gflops each? Then again it could that the console is round!

Or it is a subtle hint that MS and Nintendo are working together. Xbox + Revolution (360) = Xbox 360. ;)

Anyhow, doesn't matter.

Nintendo? NES, SNES, N64, GameCube???
Sega? Dreamcast  Genesis was cool, Saturn is an ok name.
Sony? Playstation?

Most console maker names, and product names, are kinda silly. We only ACCEPT names like "Playstation" and "Nintendo" because we are familiar with them. The company name is something I can overlook because they are foreign, but most console names are stinkers imo.

Xbox really was not that bad of a name imo. The case design stunk, but the name itself was cool. Xbox 360 sounds as silly as any other name I have ever heard, but oh well.

It will fit well next to my Playstation, Dreamcast, and Gamecube--all systems that at first struck me as having silly names.

Personally, I think they should have called it: Xbox HD, XHD for short. That would be SURE to get under everyones skin here (muwahahaha)--while the fact the games would look better and have more interactive world would give people games with higher "definition" game worlds, even if not higher "resolution" in all cases.

And I would just love the outcry of complaints ;)

XHD would be laughed at by most european countries on grounds of unpronounceability.
Besides, abbreviations are a very anglosaxon tendency which is not liked by most latin-languages speaking countries. Although i can see how the kids might like their abbreviations to sound cool.
In Italian, XHD is dreadful to say.

Acert93:

Many people will disagree with your view, given that names like PlayStation or Gameboy are far more indicative to what the machine does than any of the others you mentioned (including Xbox).

Nintendo/Sega get away with it well because their names have earned a reputation over the years that puts it in line with games since [console] generations, which is why "Saturn" or something a like isn't as bad as it has the name "SEGA" attached to it.

Talk to any casual that doesn't play games about "Xbox" and they wouldn't know squat about what it is and what it does.

Thanks to the near universal acceptance of the decimal system, it would probably look more like this:

Greek: 360
French: 360
Dutch: 360
Italian: 360
Spanish: 360

In Euskera ( language from basque country ) : Xbox "hirurehun ta hirurogei". Ummm.... at least we know for sure that the tv commercials will be long...

Hi guys, i've been reading you for several weeks. I have registered just to say: what was ballmer sweating when agreed on choosing this f**ng name? Does M$ know HOW TERRIFIC THIS NAME SOUNDS IN SPANISH?

I'll write it for you to kow...

"Ekis box trescientos sesenta"

Maybe in the usa "exbox zri-sixti" sounds cool, but in spain "Ekis box trescientos sesenta" could not be taken as a good definition of cool...

"Nintendo revolution" sounds cool, "Pleiesteision tres" sounds kinda cool. But, believe me, "Ekis box trescientos sesenta" is not even worth the time expended on hear it...

I suppose M$ will intend to sell it as it sounds in english, or at least they should to...

So you write numbers in the air instead of pronouncing them now, when actually TALKING to other people? Now THAT's an interesting idea! :)

Vaan, let´s play a game in the "zri sixty" mañoooo.

Yes, i think if it´s true they will have to sell it with the pronunciation in english, at least in some countries.

In Dutch a videogame device with 360 in its name would be pronounced in English. ;)

People would even laugh out loud when you would say "PlayStation twee" instead of "playstation two".

I think this might be the same in other countries, so in short, some stuff doesn't make sense.

Ahiva la hostia!! (Let's stop... xD)

Yeah, at least in spain they should sell it as it sounds in english. Anyway i'm more worried about how to sell a product based on online gaming in a country with stunning pings and low bandwidth (We better forget the low presence of connections exceeding 512KB/s or else we get depressed...) than of its name.

Well, I don´t know about everybody else, but at least the people I know just call it "xbox", not "equis box".
