Witcher 2

Ah so they did not use the same voice actors from the first game? That voice for Geralt in the first game suited him quite perfectly I thought.

No, they used the same actors, at least with Geralt. Doug Cockle handles Geralt's role as he did in the first game.

Overall, I found the voice acting to be really good.

Sounds like they should have kept the game in the oven for awhile longer. :|

I don't know about that. In 45 hours I was hit by a bug only two times, and in both cases the bug was the same: Trying to use a inventory item in the combat too often caused some input problems. I think this was mentioned in the release readme.txt.

Around half of the things mentioned in 1.2's changelog seem to be new features / changes.

I've been playing probably little over 10h so far and I'm liking it. I'm still in chapter 1 doing some sidequests.

I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of the new combat system. Maybe the added responsiveness in that 1.2 patch helps out, but as it is, it kind of feels like some retarded Ninja Gaiden clone where everything is worse. I'm not impressed by the graphics either. I'm playing at max settings except no uber sampling at 1080p. Maybe it's because I'm playing on a 100" projector screen, but imo there is nothing special about the graphics apart from some fancy effect here and there. The pop in is just horrible, shadows are bad and the general texture quality is nothing to write home about. The bloom/fog seems overdone and cuts the visibility. Imo the graphics and user interface already made it feel like a console port already before the announcement.

User interface sucks, maybe the new patch helps. I'm playing with a pad. Everytime I browse the menus or change equipment etc. it feels like I have to battle with the system. I think I need to use mouse for some of the scrolling and atleast I wasn't able to rest periods between the dawn, noon etc, without using the mouse, with controller it just moved the slider 6h at a time.

The world seems interesting and has a less western made feeling to it, which is nice. Having just finished Witcher 1 and now having the character be a total wimp without any reason is kind of a let down though, but what can you do? I don't know if disallowing "potion spamming" is a good thing. Now you just go to a battle, die, load and drink a potion before the battle, save and hope for the best.

I didn't have big issues with the infamous court yard battle though. Just drank a swallow potion and ran around a bit trying to isolate one or two enemies, used Aard sign to stun one or two and then attack someone. Took maybe 4-5 tries.

I'm liking it, but it's certainly not due to game mechanics or graphics.

Are u realy playing witcher 2 :?: Maybe turn off motion blur. It greatly helps to not look like a xbox360 game that tryes to hide the low resolution assets with bluring everything into shit. The textures in game look sharp and perfectly fit the enviroments.

I actualy cant imagine how will they port this to xbox360 without a extreme downgrade in assets. Decent PC-s have problems with streaming if u run to a lot of places on the map and than the village. (texture pop-up)

Maybe I expected too much after all the hype. To me it looks like Witcher 1 engine souped up with some nice effects. I think Crysis 1 looks much more impressive. When I look at things like the grass, Geralts hair, or plenty of textures here and there it just looks so underwhelming and even the best parts look only ok to good. I haven't been impressed once with the visuals so far. The big screen might hurt here, but I was blown away often when I played Crysis/Warhead. I think this game lacks a lot of polish in many places and that just stands out to me.

I'm sure it loses something with the X360 conversion. I personally think it should handle most of what's there just fine, but we'll see.

Graphically I found the Witcher 2 to be OK/good but it isn't a huge leap from Witcher 1, which still looks great (I've always liked the graphics of games which use NWN1's engine).

Maybe the "coolest" thing for me in Witcher 2 are the tents which move in wind :)

The graphics portion of the NWN engine was ripped out and replaced with custom stuff for Witcher 1.

Ok, thanks for the info :) When starting with Witcher 2 I wondered how they managed to create a graphical look so similar to the first game even though they presumably changed the engine (from Aurora to their own) but that explains a lot.

This game has the best textures and design ever.

For better LoD just increase "MeshDistanceScale" to some higher value, like 4.8.

Default value for far is 1.2.

I have to check some of those config thingies out. I don't understand why better options aren't available straight from the game though. Why do I have to manually change some goofy config file?

Where the hell is Nebula lurking these days btw. I hope he is still alive. He would have tweaked this right already :)

Try this cfg:

[Rendering]
AllowAntialias=1
AllowBloom=0
AllowBlur=0
AllowCutsceneDOF=0
AllowDOF=0
AllowDecals=1.0
AllowMotionBlur=0
AllowRain=1
AllowSSAO=1
AllowScatterDOF=0
AllowShafts=1
AllowSharpen=1
AllowVignette=1
AtlasTextureDownscale=0
DanglesLimiter=0
DetailTextureDownscale=0
Fullscreen=1
MaxAtlasTextureSize=4096
MaxCubeShadowCount=1
MaxCubeShadowSize=2048
MaxSpotShadowCount=3
MaxSpotShadowSize=2048
MaxTextureSize=2048
MeshDistanceScale=4.8
ShadowQuality=3
ShadowedLights=3
TextureDownscale=0
TextureMemoryBudget=900
UberSampling=0
VSync=0

Is it just me or does it seem like the xbox 360 announcement felt like another stab in the back? As long as their focus on the PC does not drop and they keep releasing content and expansion packs and what not and keep parity in terms of content between the console and the PC but keep the PC quality higher (which makes sense) then I am not going to complain. They need to make money after all and the easiest way to go is to market to the console demographic. Still felt rather disappointed...

He hasn't logged in to B3D since late April. Hope everything is ok.

Thanks I'll try those later!

Just making sure that I do this right... So does it matter which config setting (low, medium, high, uber) I change? I assume it works if I just change for example uber and put those inputs in and choose uber from the options menu?

edit: just noticed that there are plenty of different config files. is the user.config the one to edit?

To some extent the stabbing theory holds, only CDProjekt is stabbing themselves also. Not very smart from a busyness stand point, unless im missing the bigger picture. The game doesn't even have a month of release and they officially confirm the console port, a port that comes in November no less, what was the hurry to announce it? There are some console only owners or low end PC users that are very impressed with the game so this kills any desire to jump in to the PC version. Also why release in direct competition to SkyRim? What's the strategy here?

@Dr. Evil: Man wait until it sinks, you'll be impressed sooner or later. Trust me.

Just edit "user config". And after you put these changes do not start configuration tool. It will overwrite.

You can add this line too:

FoliageDistanceScale=4.8

And change "MaxCubeShadowCount" to 3.
