Wipeout HD [PSN]

Those new shots look hot! And 1080p @ 60fps to boot!

I wasn't really impressed with the E3 07 video. But this looks quite a bit better.

Hmm, somewhat mixed feelings from the new shots. Some of them are good, but some are bland and just plain dull. Have to see this one in motion though, and if memory serves me right the trailer was sweet.

But I just gave Wipeout Pulse (the new PSP one) a spin today and it's mighty good, so I have no reason to believe that HD would stink. Also highly, although off-topicly, recommend Patapon :)

Does anybody know if a proper Disk based sequel is in the works for 2008 as well?

IIRC there's been comments from Studio Liverpool folks that there will be a (more fully fledged) disc based wipeout but there's no offical announcement.

The HD update still looks pretty tho, eh?

Don't doubt that, but I can't remember reading such a thing.

Btw, did online play really get canned from HD? That'd be a shame :(

I am afraid I have to agree here. The screen shots look completely barren and lifeless. There's not much going on in the background, etc. No flags, no people swinging banners etc., no rusty spots here and there.
Don't get me wrong - if it's running 1080p@60fps, that's indeed nice, but the environment look far too sterile.

True. This has been a problem especially since Wipeout Fusion and afterwards. I think that the Wipeout that managed best to present convincing environments that felt "real" was Wipeout1.

It also had an incredible attention to detail in its time. For example I recall the Russian track. It really looked like Russia in the future. Dark, industrial, sky filled with pollution, dead trees, a black and white poster at the beginning of the stage showing rebels, the dirt on the track and buildings....

Also when you approached the seats of the human spectators you could hear the crowd.

Now everything looks too clean and way too futuristic. And dead.

I didn't expect much more than this from Wipeout as a PSN title to be honest. Hopefully this won't stop them from doing a more detailed truly next-gen version later though, we'll see. Most important to me is whether they manage to nail the controls (making good use of the sixaxis). It has the potential of being a sixaxis killer app. Then make it a, say, 20 euro PSN title and use its profits (if any) to invest in making a proper Wipeout, or if not successful, conclude that we won't need one for a while just yet.

Yer a combination of sixaxis tilt and rumble, as well as using the analogue stick would be great!
As long as they get it rite. or give us plenty of options for the combinations + rumble.

It looks great. However, I'd like to see some more organic looking tracks (through a jungle moon perhaps, or a volcanic ) to break up that F-Zero future city style. Who says the future has to be all city scapes and cloud towns?

Also excited to see Kraftwerk are involved in the soundtrack!

I hope they include option to play your own tunes from HDD. I'd pop in all of my Future Sound Of London tunes for the nostalgy of old Wipeout versions :)

I popped my old Wipeout XL ps1 disc in my ps3 and all the music tracks show up like an audio cd in the XMB! The cd lookup doesn't work on it but you can fill in that info and rip the tracks to the ps3. Now if they support custom soundtracks you can play with classic XL songs. yayyy!
