Wipeout HD [PSN]

So far it has everything I want!

I'm really, REALLY curious how the sixaxis controls turn out for this game, because this is one game that could really benefit from the new control options.

Further update of sorts from Threespeech. A link to another (unheard of) site's "preview".

I think there's some new screenies in there too I think. They, (the unheard of site: PALGN) claim that it should be available for DL before the end of the year...

Futhermore:

The demo only features one track, which unfortunately limits the scope of any impressions of the title. However, the game is apparently made up largely of tracks from prior Wipeout iterations, so in a sense this does not present an issue. In short if you've enjoyed previous Wipeout games, you'll know what you are in for.

That's wierd. I remember threespeech saying the release won't be until next year. oops, I might be wrong about Wipeout HD not coming out this year. This was the list I looked at on threespeech awhile ago. Since Wipeout wasn't on there, I assumed it wasn't coming out this year.

PalGN is an Aussie site, and this game was playable at an expo on the weekend. I imagine they asked some of the local Sony reps. Edit: they're probably the biggest Australian gaming site, so "unheard of" is a bit much...

I played it and it is hard! I was a legend at Wipeout2097 (I even won a national comp many years ago) but I finished last on my first race.

Looks good though, extremely sharp. You can tell it is an old game redone in HD... but it still kicks 95% of DD software. Why this sort of production value isn't more common in the XBLA/PSN sector is surprising. It really is several steps up.

If they are anything like Fusion I ll be dissapointed.

When is it going to be available?

edit:btw does PS1's wipeout in PSN include WIpeout 2097 and Wipeout1 or just Wipeout1? I want 2097

PalGn said before the end of the year. That's we get for a date.

I don't recall anything being wrong with fusion, other than the ugly ships and some very bad choices in track design (wide areas and obstacles, WTF?). Slowdown is also a big no no.

With some tweaks though, you were able to play with absolutely no slowdown at blazing 60 fps which is just godly. I hope they include some of the tracks of Fusion as well. While a lot of them are the worst in the series, some are undoubtedly the best.

Well apart from the things you mentioned, the controls just didnt feel right to me either. The camera work and controls were much better in Wipeout 2097 for me. They felt more realistic and engaging. The ship sin fusion felt as if it was stuck on a fixed certain level of height while on track. And the walls gave the impression that they had magnets. In 2097 and Wipeout the ships antigravity force reacted with the surface. If there was a jump or a bumb on the track the ship would float a bit up and down, or it would stay for some time flowing in the air trying to level itself proberly while you straggled to keep it in course.

I had the impression that there was a better physics involved in those than in Fusion.

Also although the large number of weapons in the game are lovingly welcome, they felt that they lacked something. Perhaps it was the way the ships responded to them when attacked. In the old wipeouts when you shot a ship it didnt simnply slow down. It spinned, lost control, or jumped up and down, especially with the earthquakes.

I think that the music list could have been better too. It didnt seem right or as fitting as in the first two. The developers just choose a list of electronic music and the it in. They are doing the same since Wipeout Fusion.

Wipeout 1 and 2097 had a huge impact on me. It affected both my view for videogames and my music tastes. The underground, futuristic cult feel was marvelous. The art had depth. The music was extremely well fitting. Designers Republic did an awesome job at delivering the right design and style. I am expecting for that particular Wipeout that will make feel the same since the days of the PS1

To be honest, although I was a huge fan of Wipeout 2097, I think in my case, the time difference between that and Fusion on the PS2 was too large to be noticing that much of a difference in controls. What especially grabed me were the stunning graphics (despite the aliasing) and the absolutely incredible sense of speed that the previous ones simply couldn't convey very smooth. Being on PS1, how could it.

The controls IMO were good - although you are right that there was less of an impact from the weapons. Can't judge hitting the walls too much, since that's something I kind of tried avoiding (and with good result actually as I became more accustomed to the controls and speed). I have played quite a bit of Wipeout Pure on the PSP and that is said to be much closer to 2097 in terms of gameplay again. It's good - but I must say, I somewhat prefer Fusion better. I'm guessing a lot has to do with the 30fps framerate and the stupid analog stick which makes a comparison between the two quite difficult.

Fusion had its faults - but it also enhanced the series on so many ways that I guess I must have overlooked some of them. Fusion was also had a *very* steap learning curve, which I suspect may be the reason so few like it.

The electronic music was a mixed back IMO. Some absolutely amazing tracks and some not really all that good. Most memorable are the ones from F.S.O.L. and Amethyst IMO. On the old ones, chemical brothers had some good ones, as well as Prodigy of course.

The worst thing about Fusion though, IMO were the obstacles on the track and those very wide areas which IMO were quite overdone. The rain forrest was a spectacular track though - something I would like to see in the new Wipeout.

Sorry dude, I will caveat that with: unheard of by me. PalGN mention the expo in their write up if anyone hasn't checked it out.

And as for asking the local Sony reps... hmm. Can those type of guys ever speak authoritatively?

Yeah I must say that I liked some of the improvements you mentioned. But I hoped that they would have atleast kept the things that made the original feel so good in their time too.

Btw does anyone have an idea if Wipeout 2097 is going to be released in Store?
