Anyone know how long you have for activation in W7? Still 30 days? I'd like to switch to W7 now but won't be getting my upgrade till release and don't really want to have to to a fresh install all over again when I get it.
You have 30 days of non-activation, but you can reset twice to get 90 days in total.
Don't forget The KMPlayer
Indeed KMP is great! I use it as my primary player few years now.
Bludd, if you want lighter load of background stuff, use Windows' own firewall, it works just as fine as the 3rd party stuff, and if there's a tool that gives you more control over it if you want.
Also, the Microsoft Security Essentials is quite light as a AV and should work fine, if you really think you need AV.
I suggest changing to Media Player Classic Home Cinema for video, if not for else, but for superior IQ (via shader enhancements) and DXVA (hardware decoding) support.
WMP12's own codecs work fine, too, and support DXVA and pretty much all video files (as long as you install Haali Media Splitter for .mkv's), but doesn't offer the enhancing shaders MPCHC does
Thanks for your suggestions. I won't use the Windows Firewall, because it doesn't have proper outbound protection. I don't want to use the Microsoft Security Essentials when I have a proper licence for Symantec Endpoint Protection and the new version (11.0.5) works well with Windows 7.
I don't like the GUI of MPCHC and the WMP12 codecs are not fine with the Haali renderer. Xvid is blocky as hell, no I'll stick with FFdshow and Zoom Player.
I edited my post. What I meant was that it has sub-standard outbound protection.Strange, I haven't had problems with WMP12 and videos being blocky, it might be the Haali renderer if you're using that which is causing problems, you should only use the Haali splitter so it can crack those mkvs open and use it's own codecs + renderer.
GUI is of course something you like or don't, but MPCHC is one the rare cases where I don't mind the GUI, the features are just too good to ignore (opens 'anything', has good shaders to improve iq, supports dxva)
Windows Firewall has been properly "two-way firewall" since Vista, so it does have proper outbound protection too.
