Unlikely. MS is out to cut cost by all means, and DVD-burners aren't exactly cheap...

Dude are you sure about that? I can get a NEC or Toshiba DVD burner/rewriter today for $60. I can see MS add a function where you can transfer saves from a memory card onto DVD-Rs so that you can backup DLC without having to buy multiple flash cards. For example if the DLC is say 50MB or more you can transfer that onto DVDs to free up space on the flash card then when you want to reuse the DLC you just transfer it back onto the flash card.

The price is probably not prohibitive but a DVD recorder has little purpose in a gaming system. Patches will be stored on memory cards and media files will be streamed from a Windows PC. No need for a fancy drive.

That's exactly how I see it playing out, cybamerc.

Deadmeat is right. Microsoft will be out to save wherever they can and, even better, make some money. Memory cards will be a big part of Xbox 2.

Why not?

How about Mixed-Mode DVD's able to store the game in the ROM section and record information in an RW-section too. This would make it possible to have the complete game ( game, patches, downloaded levels, informations, etc..) on one disk ready to go.

a lot of devs put gams on CD instead of DVD in the early days of ps2 , do you think game developers will be happy to be forced to put their games on expensive Mixed-Mode DVD's ?

what's the point, this is not going to be a non-profit project, companies try to make money of it you know? they would be crazy to put in a DVD-R drive in it
Sony has made a hugh profit on those ps2 memorycards , Ms will going to have a piece of that too

Does such a disc even exist? I'm sure it can be done but is it worth it? Prerecorded DVDs are completely different from recordable ones. Mixing those formats sounds... messy. Recording a DVD is also slow as hell compared to storing files on a flash card.

Anyway, I don't see it happening. Such a disc would negate the need for flash RAM and it's a fact that M$ is considering that option. If they don't go with flash RAM after all it will be because they put a harddrive in the box.

How about providing an alternative to the expensive manufacturing and distribution networks of conventional DVDs?
The consumer would just buy a blank disc, and the download the desired content on to it from a secure file distribution network.
One of the big advantages of such a scheme would be that small developers wouldn’t have to bet the farm on a "narrow" title. It could lead to the long awaited, and much needed surge in creativity and willingness to take a risk in the industry.
