Will ATi's R500 be ready for XBox2 in fall 2004?

I know about all those econmy chinkchank, but again, who cares? Why look so long into the uncertain financial future and why not enjoy the games and 3D. Who can predict if me-us be still playing games by then?

If MS XFLop exit the market, too bad for them. Not good enough boyz. If KK SCEI dies in face of competition, thats your problem with those crazy ideals. Same goes with Nintendo, your old ways failed you. If the industry crashes, hohoho, too bad, us 1-2 forumers cant do no shit to salvage anything.

Right now, we-aH! for MS and their added competition. we-AH for Xbox being a VERY competent system. we-Ah for the cuts and bundles and whatever. we-Ah for 3D graphics!

Chap, ever get the feeling you don't belong somewhere?
...there was a chance just a moment ago, hope you didn't miss it...

Someone made an unjust/biased statement. I had to adjust that. ;)
No, I mean you might not care speculating the future, but instead just care for 'me me give me my 3D grapHiXx now I want my eye candy NOW! Give me the best numbers speXX, give them to me CHeAPp 'cos I don't care if Sony MS or Nintendo or the whole console industry is there next gen I just want to play NOW!

I just don't see that kind of attitude fitting in a forum, which has been very much about discussing the exsisting and speculating future 3D technologies.

If that was just you getting defensive, well...

You got to be kidding me.

Grall didn't even put down any other chip, he just said that the PS2 is the console with the most interesting sound development. Do you know what sound development means? It is pretty clear when reading the whole paragraph why he sees it as such. Now just let it be, before another thread gets ruined.

Do you not think Xbox can handle DTS in realtime?

it doesn't need to. DD5.1 is more than enough for Xbox to be worried about DTS. not sure though, maybe we should get info from devs around here. i think the main problem though is making surround sound USEFUL in games. no point in supporting it if it doesn't help the experience. Halo and some other games had a very nice implementation of it for example, while others are just useless.
DTS implementation in SSX Tricky (still have to get SSX3 but it also supports DTS in realtime) was cool and very well implemented but it never really had an use for anything more than a *WOW-I-CAN-HEAR-THE-OPPONENT-BEHIND-ME* effect.

I think games like SH or very atmospheric games (ICO, Metroid, Zelda, DOOM3 etc) would benefit the most out of real surround sound, be it DTS or DD.

and i still have to figure out whether the *superiority* of DTS over DD that usually holds true on DVDs, is also true for games. somehow i don't think so...

I figure they may want to push R500 back to Q1 2005 to get a full two product cycles in

Do you think they can last in the PC sector with the R3xx underlying the architecture for 2 generations? I seriosuly don't know and haven't heard anything, but I question if the R420 will be in the same ballpark with the new NV40 when it comes to advanced logic constructs like the PPP

Vince, as we've said before, but you appear to have forgotten, its "unerlying" in the same way that GeForce4 Ti is underlying to NV30.

As for things like "PPP", I'd be surprised if they turn up as there is no contruct for it withing DirectX9 - DirectX developers has said that these "woul concievably be part of DirectX Next".

If the xbox 2 is for fall 2004, and as the system has to be frozen several months before launch, i guess the gpu would be a R4xx rather than a R500 type no ?

If the R420 is a 16x1 type chip, it would be enough anyway if you compare to actual gpu in xbox or other consoles ?

Hmm R4xx seems great right now, but by late 2004 it will be nothing spectacular. XBox2 might turn out to be an economy console...

Oh and R420 is 12x1. Yes it will be a huge (HUGE) improvement over NV2A in every aspect (particularly shaders) but will fall behind PS3 and probably even N5.

Actually, both R4xx and NV4x don't seem great at ALL, because we don't know squat about them. :p I figure we should at least see the major chip architecture before praising/deriding them and estimating their lifespans.

Well THAT'S a no-brainer. But we were referring to R4xx and NV4x in general, in relation to each other and their predecessors, and in relation to their product cycles, and for THAT we need a lot more. NV2A comparisons are immaterial.
