Blu-ray: Will all studios shift completely over by launch time?

In a stunning announcement Sunday morning, Paramount Home Entertainment has decided to support Sony's Blu-ray Disc format for the next-generation of high-definition DVDs.

"We have been intrigued by the broad support of Blu-Ray, especially the key advantage of including Blu-Ray in PlayStation 3," Lesinski said in a statement. "After more detailed assessment and new data on cost, manufacturability and copy protection solutions, we have now made the decision to move ahead with the Blu-ray format. We believe the unique portfolio of Viacom content coupled with this format will provide great benefit for consumers and our shareholders alike."Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Ben Feingold said that while the Paramount announcement is very important to the Blu-ray camp, "being on both formats will confuse the consumer."

Several execs in each camp believe the Paramount announcement to publish in both formats—which is the direction Warner has been leaning for the past week or two with a similar announcement expected this week—is simply a temporary face-saving strategy and that ultimately all studios will shift completely over to Blu-ray by launch time.-Video Business
Interesting development to say the least.

If Paramount et al publish to both formats, and the BluRay supporters only support BluRay, that'll seal it if nothing else. There'll only be one format with all the content.

Damn fools...they should've spoken to Jordi Ribas first!

It's funny how different camps look at the same information, and come up two completely different opinions! Someone's gotta be lying, right!?

You're right it is funny how Presidents of billion dollar companies don't talk to writers on certain websites, because those writers are so knowledgeable.

If this article is correct, it spells very very good things for Bluray. If Warner are moving to support Bluray too, I've little doubt Universal would follow suit (they'd then be the only ones not). That'd leave Bluray pretty much with full support, and you could feel a little happier about supporting it fully with your dollars, assuming you're in the market for HD movies.

It's fairly neat to see PS3 being a big helper in their decision too. PS3 is helping with Bluray's credibility/clout now, and Bluray - if it becomes fully supported as it may well now - will later certainly help PS3 out. Kind of a happy circle of mutual support ;)

Which would make me a happy guy, being that I've pretty much already brought a PS3. (in my mind):D
