Wii Price

Wow.

The messages in this thread are really rather amazing.

So the Wii is good if it's $199 and includes an extra controller? Or if it is $249 and includes a controller and a game?

Why can't the Wii just be priced at $199 or $249 and have the same package as every single other console of late, which means a single controller and no game?

Why is that such a horrible value?

Is it because everybody readily admits that the Wii is underpowered, nothing more than a slight upgrade to the gamecube, and therefore isn't worth the money?

New consoles have been launching with a single controller and no included games for how long now?

Why does the Wii need to add an extra controller, or a game, or BOTH, in order to justify it's price of $199 or $249?

The 360 doesn't have to.

The PS3 doesn't have to.

Why does the Wii have to?

I think you answered your own question right there it is because the system is a slight upgrade to the GC with a cool controller. It is like the DS while a great system the price had to be kept way below the PSPs because of so called power of each system.

I am excited about the controller and the possibilities. I just don't want to pay 360 type money for xbox1 like graphics.

If trama center Wii is as fun as the DS version then I might be not be able to resist the temptation of the Wii no matter the price.

What about putting 2 controllers in there too. I mean Nintendo is really pushing this play with others thing. 2 Wiimotes and a Warioware game for $229?

I agree, i actually asked the the guy at ebgames if it will come with 2 wiimotes and he said 'no way'. Shortsighted slob! ;)

i'm suprised some people think nintendo could package the wii with 2 controllers and/or a game with their base SKU.

nintendo want to sell the console at the most affordable price.

so like with the GC they'll have a base package with the minimum: one controller, no game, no memory card. and it's will be the advertised price.

and they want to make money with the accessories.

like the GC they will probably make a SKU with a game for a little less than the console and the game sold separately, but this won't happen at the launch, it will happen after at least one price cut.

Wii's Retail Price Leaked?

A few days ago Nintendo confirmed that the Wii would retail at a price under 25,000Yen (174Euro/USD 222) however when further pushed on the matter they refused to comment on an accurate price for their new system. However, today some Japanese dealers have begun to list a price for the long awaited Wii. The most noticeable of these listing is PC-Success who have listed the price as 18,000Yen (125Euro/USD160). What interests us is that PC-Success then swiftly remove the listing shortly thereafter hitting that they may have updated with their info far to early. Whether the console will actually cost 18,000Yen remains to be seen so we will still have to wait for some official confirmation from Nintendo on the matter. A screencap of one of the listing that have appeared online can see seen below.

Just a rumor by now but 125 euros start to seems like a nice price, still a bit high without new HW IMO.

Yes, from what they showed at E3 I am only interested in the controler+Wi-fi within GC HW so from my POV it is very pricefull specially given that I already have GC HW if I bought those separately would bemuch more cheaper for me.

Now I really still not beliving that it is just a overclocked GC but from what they showed this is what I can say.

AFAIK the wii will be two to three time more powerful than the gamecube
it's what nintendo said

200-300 % the power of a GC is definitively more than a GC.

Hmm, another $200 launch, another system that obviously had corners cut to meet the price.

NES - Nintendo's most successful system, wasn't that powerful but it beat out everything before it, and still competed well with systems after it. It also came with a 2 pack in games and a lightgun (possibly more?), and both Nintendo and consumers were happy with it. Sure, in retrospect it could have been more powerful, but like the Gameboy lines, it was good enough against the competition, which was basically nothing, and good enough for consumer expectations.

SNES - Nintendo's second most successful system. Had a seriously delayed launch, and a weak cpu, but generally consumer and corporate satisfaction were still high.

Virtual Boy - Offered innovation no one had asked for and didn't work that well, poorly straddled the line between a handheld and a console, had horrible ergonomics, seriously lacking in technology such as color graphics. Thankfully the Wii isn't asking users to put their head in a basket, and its graphics aren't nearly as outdated. No aspect of it was well recieved by the market really.

N64 - Nintendo's 3rd most successful system, and generally seen as where Nintendo 'lost it.' Met the $200 price point, but had a late launch, less ram than desired, and no CD drive. Though solving all of those conditions probably would have meant a $400 price point at least, but maybe two could have been solved for $300. I'm not sure if I'd place more emphasis on such a late launch (thus destroying the home team momentum Nintendo had) or the CD drive, which made it very crippled compared to the competition.

Gamecube - $200 price point, launched late again, and once again had less memory than desired. It also lacked a DVD drive. I'd say the late launch once again destroyed much of Nintendo's momentum, but I don't know if putting it out at the same time as PS2 would have been a good idea. It wouldn't have won either way, but it's possible Xbox could have been a non-factor.

Nintendo DS - $150 and underpowered, but that's about it. It is the first time Nintendo's handheld dominance has seemed under threat though, but it seems to be a pretty similar situation to the SNES, except with innovation through input rather than technology.

And once again, the Wii will be launching at a $200 price point and very late. I don't think there was really much momentum lost from launching late, Gamecube has been fairly non-competitive in the market place for several years already, one more probably won't hurt. The only things really going against it right now are being severely underpowered and Nintendo's position as an underdog. Oh wait, that kind of does make Nintendo's late launch a severe problem, since launching early would have allowed them to cut off Microsoft's and Sony's momentums; I can't think of any underdog that ever took the lead or a significant share of the market without launching first. (NES from Atari, Genesis from Nintendo, Playstation even more from Nintendo; there have also been plenty of losers to launch first, but generally they had a completely unappealing product or didn't have the capital to support the system under any market conditions, Microsoft is really the first serious player with an early launch who might not take a significant share of the market, though that remains to be seen)

At the store I have work I see one small part of american market. For this small market (not statistical representation for total american market) we have most Software sales for:

1) Advance SP (very good sales)
2) PS2 (good sales)
3) DS (good sales)
4) GameCube (some)
5) Xbox360 (some)
6) Xbox (almost never)

For system sales:

1) Advance SP (good sales)
2) DS (good sales)
3) PS2 (good sales)
4) Xbox360 (almost never)
5) Xbox (almost never)
6) Gamecube (almost never)
7) Gameboy Micro (even one sale I have not seen)

Many new Xbox360 premium and cores for 1 week we have with us and still we have no sales for this hardware (but we have a few software sales).

Just wondering, who is the original poster that he would be in a position to talk to a NOA employee?

I have weekend job at Target department store and I make good friend with Nintendo display lady. She is very nice and talks nicely. Maybe this is her job to say these things so we can tell customers. I do not know. But I ask her many questions and she gives me answers. Also she ask me what I think normal people feel about E3 event and announcements and also PS3 and Xbox360 so I tell her what opinions I read on this forum. I think they have a lot of excitement but also a little bit nervous.

the wii will (shall? be less late than the gamecube.

the gamecube launched something like two years after the PS2, the wii will be released more or less at the same time as the PS3. and it will be launched +/- 12 months after the first console from the same gen (x360).

Completely off-topic by when I read +/- I wondered how the Wii could be launched 12 months prior to the 360 ^^
"about" would have been better, but at the same time, I found this funny :)

you seem at the least uninformed.

Are you talking about IGN articles, from the same guy how say that Wii will not have shaders:LOL: , those things are horrible you can even derive contraditions from that, plus the way he write there is a lot of ways to interpret that you cant even be sure from what you have read.

What I said that from all the official info/demos/show... make me thing that 125euros is high for that, but, like I said, I dont belive yet that this is all we will get but if it is then the price is high IMO.

$200 for what basically is a new controller for old GameCube.
I think I'll pass.

I actually was quite excited about Wii before the E3, when I still had hope it would be more powerful or somehow unique in graphic style. It was known it wouldn't quite match xbox360 or PS3, but I think most still expected more.
For what was shown I thought it would cost $150 max. But it really wasn't realistic expectation, as it can't cost less than DS really.

As E3 games showed, they're technically just GC+ . While I agree graphics aren't all there is to games, I do expect a visible jump in graphics quality and thus immersion when I buy a new console... and their E3 showing was generally voted as the most impressive, based on what?? Because they had the biggest quantity of playables?? But those were very simple games I might have fun just five minutes or so.

This might sound like trolling, but I'm just disappointed my excitement is let down so I need to vent.

On the other hand, $200 isn't that much really, so I still might buy one but only if the "wiimote" at least lives up to my expectations by being very responsive and accurate and indeed make it possible for example various shots in tennis rather than just registering if I move the controller or not;)

Almost completely agree, thought I really expect the gfx get better (GC had better), but I agree the games they showed are really let down they seems very simple, nice but not really what I want or those closer to what I want could be played on GC (MP3/Zelda) or seems to have problems (RS), still future games may be much better.

Anyway if this is all we get then the prices must go down.
