Wife and I just got a new car

price range is 20-60. the lower the better, of course. Definitely sounds like the M3 is the most appealing at this point...

That is a HUGE range.

Have you gone to see a Financial Counselor, btw? Or at least gone to Edmunds.com to see what spending limits you should have?

A new M3 barely fits in that range. A NEW NEW M3 (likely an M4) will probably exceed that range.

the M3 convertible MSRP is 55,000. Considering ticket price is lower, and I have special friends, I could get it for substantially cheaper. If I went with the coup then knock another 5-10g off of that.

And, yes, it's a huge range. I can afford 60g but I'm not opposed to a 20g car if it suits me perfectly. Also, if I only spend 20 then that's more I have left over to buy things like Armani's, Rolex's, and for investments (I could afford a new Rolex Air King off of my *profits* from the Nasdaq in recent months... wish I had baught SUNW while it was below 4 like I was thinking I should though :( I predict it will do quite well this fiscal year)

Don't count on paying much less than MSRP for BMWs.

Everything is an upgrade. Everything. And expensive.

A 'typically loaded' M3 coupe (not convertible) comes out to be about $56k. Even invoice is $51k.

The convertible is over $61k, or $57k for invoice.

who said I was getting a "fully loaded" one? and who said I'm going to be paying invoice?

BMW dealerships don't order cars that don't have the typical options. Even if they did, you wouldn't want one because its resale value is poop.

How many Yugos could you get for 60k? :|

None. Luckily, these buggers are no more...

Errr...what should an M4 be?

The 3 series is splitting into the 3's (sedan and wagon) and 4's (coupe and convertible).

I guessing that the M3 (since its always been a coupe or convertible--if I recall correctly), will be an M4. Or maybe they have a strong enough affection for the name and will keep it as M3, I dunno.

The M5 seems to stay as the M5, though all the M5's I've seen are 4 door sedans. 500 HP is crazy nuts, btw.

they will order whatever I want, and I will pay the same price they pay for it. Special friends. :D

We've got 612 HP and 1000 Nm in our twin-turbo 12 cyl. S, SL and CL's 8)
And that's _limited_ to 1000 Nm, it could do about 1200 :devilish:

and who, specifically, is "we"?

Not sure about the changed being made into the 3 series of BMW. It might be that the M3 and M5 simply don't fall into those categories.

The 350X is a novel idea but it is overpriced for what you can get through the competition. The power is nominal at best and it's not exactly easy to get more power out of it. I guess through a superchager or one of the twin turbo systems it can be brought to a more fun level of power. I would definitely get something over that in the same price range.

Hey Sage, do yourself a favor. Go to any local store that carries the Dupont Registry and pick up their Buyer's Guide for 2005. There are some dman fine cars that are expensive but theyhave a few that are in your price range.

"We" is Mercedes-AMG, where I work :D

SCHWEET! I would love to work there! Damn, that would be fun.

so, that means you can get me an SLK55 AMG then, right? *holds up sign 'Will **** for car'*

Very tempting :devilish: , though only if you pay for it... ;)

SLK is a real honey, you'd fall in love immediately. Though my favourite is the CL (S-Class coupé) with V12 twin turbo. Majestic! 204 000 EURO, though (about 290 000 $), but in the US it should be quite a bit cheaper than here.

Edit:
If you're into hardcore-sporty kinda driving, you'll go for the M3. If you like best of both worlds, balanced between sport and comfort, you should go for the SLK55

well the question is will it fall within my pricerange? I'm beginning to think not... however, the SLK350 is... but I want the AMG :'(

You should look into the Honda S2000.

Reasonably inexpensive (mid 30's), good performer, relatively rare on the streets.

Not to mention it blows away the Porche Boxter, not the S of course, but the price/performance is absolutely stellar.
