Whatever happened to Getaway?

You guys say it's happened many times before with basically completed games. I only have your word on that. I'm not saying it isn't possible to cancel a game. You guys are acting like it's impossible for the game 8 Days to have just changed names. It isn't impossible. Plus, it seems that the article done just 3 months ago is completely ignored by some. If that article didn't exist, I would be in full agreement with you two (like I am about The Getaway).

So, in the end, only time will tell.

I would be interested to know though how far along these games really were. I wouldn't be surprised if there had been other priorities already that slowed or stalled production on these games. For The Getaway I could also see that they decided if GTA IV was a big success again it might make The Getaway too expensive to properly compete with it, especially given platform exclusivity.

Eight Days was just ramping up into full production. The Getaway was still in pre-production, to be worked on after the release of Eight Days.

I have to say...I hope SCEE London are working on a big graphical showpiece game, because that's one of their huge strengths. In my eyes, Sony UK developers are the technical beasts of the company...don't want to see it go to waste.

add Red Alert from EA to the axed list too

One more game? Hmm, maybe they feel they will sell to few copies. And with the step development cost it might not turn into profit. Or it might just be problematic to reach the target render for these games at reasonable cost or at all and thus they drop it.

It's speculation.

It happens in all media too, even very late in the day. Yes, films are shot and not released. Books are written, contacts signed, the author paid their initial advance, and then the publisher decides not to publish the book after all.

Effective management looks at all projects throughout their development and reevaluates as needed. Could be, for example, that SCEE has seen Wii and said to itself 'why the heckers aren't we creating similar EyeToy games for PS3?' resulting in a sudden drop of current projects and refocus. And yes, bad management can make rash decisions that drops healthy projects!

I think that the PS3 needs high profile potential AAA games coming out for the PS3. Many of the "playstation faithfull" purchased the PS3 on the strength of the first party games that Sony has produced over the years. I am disapointed that the Getaway was cancled as the trailers and GDC tec demos made it look like very realistic city environments.

In this case it's more about the new manager trying to bring back the gaming division into profitability as soon as possible IMHO. Spending another 40+ million on two projects with uncertain return of investment is something they can't afford if they want to make money. It's a pure business decision, cut your losses immediately and so on.

Activision had two of the best selling games of this holiday season, yet I'd bet even they would do the same as well. Sony on the other hand has been loosing money on software development in addition to the losses on hardware... it just can't go on forever.

Is there any news on their exclusive game with R* ? Is it based on the same genre as Getaway and GTA ?

That might actually be subject to debate. I think it needs a better price first, even though I can see how that's not likely until late 2008...

Then why are they not buying them? Okay, Lair was bad, but why doesn't Heavenly Sword, Uncharted or Ratchet?

Sales charts speak for themselves, PS3 users want GTA4, COD4, and AC. Even MGS4 and FFXIII are not going to be first party titles, despite being - at this time - exclusives.

The only good reason for making a GTA4 clone is if you can make it better... and tech demos aren't games but I guess that's a given. Still, it did look good, but who knows what else was in there.
