What was the original R400?

I remember a year or so ago when we were all sitting pretty with our 9700s and similing, and dreaming of the R400 on the horizon. Then it was said the R400 was impossible on the manufacturing tech of the time so it was replaced with an enhanced R360.....

Most likely reasons for the removal from the roadmap was that it was probably over featured but under powered for the time it was due to be released.

IIRC, in one of the CC's after it was supposed to be scheduled to be around Orton made a comment about some "costs for something that didn't quite work out" (or something alng those lines). I always took that as being tapeout costs for R400.
