Videogame Mysteries

Well, imo, Wipeout was the first real "next-gen" game on the PS1, and Psygnosis deserves credit for the at that time original presentation and design. That it was a fun game didn't hurt either :)

But anyways, as you said, other than that I don't really remember any other good games that they made. I did however play Shadow of the beast 1 and 2, but didn't really find them all that special.

Did Wipeout first appear on the PS1 or in some PC form? I have to admit I liked the feel of the game, it was very smooth.

Psygnosis was pretty much tops in the graphics department so the framerate of Wipeout was good and key to the success of the game.

Shadow of the Beast I had oodles of parallax scrolling (well, 5 - 7 layers maybe) which for the time was quite good. #2 was also puzzle based which made it a bit more interesting.

If I remember correctly, it did make its first appearance on PS1, the PC version followed a couple of months later.

...to be followed by a Saturn port a short while later.

BTW, the Saturn version sucks. I need to play the PS1 version some time to see if it's any better.

Yes, because of the "issues" with trasparency with Saturn's (at least) first games, Wipeout did look worse than on PS1. Really the trasparency looked pretty painful when compared to the PS1 version (E.G. the blu-ish trail of the pod's engines were nice and smooth on PS1, while they were a bunch of ugly pixels on Saturn)

Wipeout 2097 (the sequel) played on PC with a Voodoo 1 made me drool for quite a while i must say... now THAT was pretty (at the time, when bilinear filtering was still "new"... awwwwwwwwwww the memories... )

Why were there little purple dragons on the first level of Super Mario World, only for them to never appear again, not even in other games? Just seemed a bit inconsistent to me. :/

They appear in Mario and Luigi. And they just keep getting smaller and smaller as you jump on them!

(To anyone old enough to having played Super Mario Bros -the first one for NES, they were bundled together- to death)

Why, when u had more than 10 lives, it appeared as a crown and a 1....?
(does ANYONE remember?)

That little single detail just kept me hooked.. i thought there was some kind of secret or something... God how much i played that game...

I wasn't referring to the graphic quality. =)

Here is my contribution:

1. Why Konami did a so bad conversion of Dracula X ?
The original was made by KCET and the SS one by KCEN one of the worst teams ever in Konami (only surpassed by Konami America). They did a very bad job. But the strange thing is that Suikoden 1 was also ported to SS and it kicks ass. An improved game over the original PSX title.

2. Why CAPCOM didn't release Street Fighter III for the SS
Considering how the series appeared on 1997 and the SS was still alive around this dates in Japan I cannot see it. A port of the original SF III wouldn't be so bad... And the more rare of all this is that the SFZ3 SS port was the last to arrive !!! Even later than the DC one !

3. M2 cancelation ??? Enlight me...I have no idea about it.

From an interview, they said its impossible, to do a quality conversion that the fan expect.

Though what I am wondering, why they only port SF3 to DC and not to Xbox, PS2 and GC, really SF3 is a good game, characters design maybe lacking but its one of the best 2D fighter around.

I mean Capcom pretty much ported everything else

Yes. Nagoya sucked.

And amusingly, the SS version is superiour to the PS1 one - it has two new areas (not big, but still there), a third playable character (and she's really fun too), and a whole bunch of new equipment.

Side note: He's referring to Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight - or Symphony of the Night in the US.
