Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom screens (aka boooo SOE)

Nice sharp textures. That forrest environment looks very detailed but don't know about the character design. I need to see some motion in this before I can judge more accurate. Doesn't look nearly as bad as some people make it seem. But nope, the graphics aren't Killzone level..

well we need see a full 1080p resolution pic just to see how sharp the textures are but I agree they are sharp.

I might be wrong on this, but the higher resolution should generally bring benefit as far as texturing is concerned? You effectively have a lot more information on the same screen, and this can help with a number of issues.

If your screen is a 720p screen, the downsampling process would effectively allow more information to be contributed to each pixel than might otherwise happen, also, for example.

One thing to be wary of with 1080p screens is that most of us really aren't going to be properly able to view them. I remember when 1080p shots of a couple of other games, notably Armoured Core 4, appeared, a lot of people were commenting on how bad the aliasing appeared to be, for example. But that's likely because they were looking at these screens on 1024x768 or 1280x768 monitors - effectively like looking at these screens under a magnifying glass, so every little jaggie gets blown up. On an actual 1080p screen of the same size as your monitor those artifacts would likely be really tiny, so that's just something to bear in mind..

There is no way this is going to be a good looking game, but when we see the screens at native res (7x higher) I think we'll see alot more detail and a lot less fuss. But of course we might see jaggies.

Well, yes and no.

People tend to consider textures as being sharp due to the Textels/Pixels ratio of a screen.

For instance, a unique and strechted 512x512 texture for, say, a door would be seen as being really detailed for a 3rd person type of game that runs at a 480p resolution. Since the Textels/Pixels ratio should always, or most of the time, be = or + 1.
At 1080p, the ratio would be more often inferior to 1.

Of course, detail texturing can aleviate this problem, just as much as the fact that the PPI of the HDTVs are higher than the ones of the SD/EDTVs.

Start to crate time looks like zero seconds. Old Man Murray would love this one. It also features a sewer level and a big rectangular room with a tiny table in the center for some reason. Looks like typical half-assed garbage to me. Can't you imagine the developers: "Gee, what should we put in our game?" "I know, how about a sewer level. . . make sure it has plenty of crates and barrels!" "Brilliant! I just created this huge rectangular room and painted the same texture on everything. . . . what else do you think it needs?" "I know, just put a tiny wooden table in the middle and call it a day!"

The first step of making a videogame is to blur the line between what you do and what you deserve........yeah, huh?

Cheers for that. I guess I was looking from the perspective of a downsampled 720p image, for example..you'll have more information contributing to each pixel than in the 1080p image, all else being equal? That'd help with aliasing, obviously, but also texture filtering?

No but Kameo looks gorgeous. Do we really need PS2 level visuals running at 1080p?:p

Better than it running at 720p as it would on any other system..though I don't think this is quite PS2-level, certainly not SOE's PS2 level ;)

I like it... Im glad everyone isnt just thinking that they need the "realistic" shooting game to qualify for next gen. I like the textures indoors and it looks different.

Sure it is fairly inconsistent with some shadows and some textures... but who know what stage the game is because it does look, well, empty.
Some people have praised UL's art-style on PSP because it is different to the norm. I don't mind the srt-style myself per se, but the images are very barren and uninteresting, and the stills lack eye-candy. Now if the animation is fully physics based, everthing is interactive, and we're talking next-gen gameplay even if not visuals, then that'd maybe give some leeway. However, regards not knowing what stage the game is in, you just plain shouldn't show early images if they don't show the game in a good light! It' a marketting no-no. Look at the noises made against the XB360 early showings at E3.

it's very underwhelming, is this game along the same lines as kameo?
No, it's an 'action RPG' or Hack-n-slash in the vein of Gauntlet. Closest titles ar Untold Legends for PSP, Champions of Norrath on PS2, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 and 2 which appeared on XB, Dungeons and Dragons Hero's which was XB. Similar to a more action variety of Diablo 2 on PC I believe. Basically run around levels getting swarmed by monsters, kill them with spells and special moves, gaining XP which you use to level up while collecting better armour and weapons. Smashing barrels that people have left large sums of gold in. Killing deadly animals to have them drop suits of armour and battle-axes. Or rather silly but good fun in multiplayer. DA1 was an excellent two-player experience on PS1 many years ago, is still good now, and took the Gauntlet concept to the next level. Nothing yet has made the same jump.

At least no one's saying these screens aren't real time...
Odd that unpolished screens have "leaked" out. Given Sony's earlier media control and all.

There may be a wider release of information and media on PS3 games this week, and obviously the ugly ducklings can't be kept under wraps forever. But even as far back as E3 we saw less than stellar looking PS3 games..

I think once Sony has fixed a release date, you'll see publishers start to announce and promote their own games, and they'll run the range from the spectacular to..well..UL :p

I thought that demo Sony did with the growing plants and grass looked great. Maybe this game will look the same when completed?:???:

What do you guys think?

Here are some screencaps from IGN's high res vid of the conference:

The outdoor shots are somewhat reminscint of the first capture above, before they "bring everything to life" with the grass and vegetation etc.

Yeah, that definately seems like it would be used in those untold shots. Untold has some random generated scenery or something on the psp, so I guess that tech would work well for a "next gen" version of it. That would be nice to see a smaller version of the "leaves" demo incorperated into the engine, being in the forest and all.

Hey Titanio can you link me to that video? The only video I found was this...

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=5876&type=wmv

At the 48/49 second point you can catch a glimpse of the game. Where on IGN did you find that video?
