Until Dawn [PS4]

It's very popular with streamers and youtubers and it got positive reviews, i can see it selling really well :yep2:

This game is release in a very odd time, should be in mid oct for Holloween and some good marketing campagin. The game could have used a couple more months for polishing to lock down the frame rate.

This game clearly shows the difference of playing a game and just watching it imo.

When you play UD yourself, every decision is yours, also every fail is yours, thus the story and ending is your personal experience.

Watching youtube while another person makes all the decisions...no fun imo.

Played maybe 60 to 90 minutes and really liking it. Those jump scares.. :runaway:

Already I'm thinking of my second play through and different decisions!

Ok, i really dig the game, i expected it to be good but i am really enjoying it so far. Sleeper hit of the year for sure, didn't expect it to be half as good! And it looks amazing as well (although at the cost of performance sometimes). Screen space effects are used to great effect in UD, some more screens:

no tec progress the last 8 years or what?? Meh!

No, this was initially a PS3 game from a studio that probably did not get high budget to craft this game. I think we can be very happy that they even manage to create this little horror gem.

And QD's Sorcerer demo is a great showcase of things to come from them. [I still think that QD is insane for not using head-mounted face-filming cameras. They are only using wall cameras to track entire acting volume [body AND faces]].

Best looking horror game to date, and currently in my top 5 of best looking Ps4 games (both technically and artistically), easily:

Facial animation is ok, everything looks so good in comparison that it stands out. Lighting, AO, volumetrics, SSR, SSS, materials and everything else is cutting edge for the genre. Performance could use some optimization in some places but thankfully it doesn't affect the game as much as i think it would. Also, game looks crisp, aliasing is kept to a minimum and IQ isn't soft for it, AA solution very good + native 1080p. UD also did two things for me:
  • Hyped me about Horizon, this engine is very impressive!
  • Made me want another Alan Wake, setting is very similar

i was hoping somebody upload youtube complete with the branches and QTE (using youtube annotation linking to other video). No need for all. Just a few encounter at the begining should be nice

^ that would be a difficult task, you simply have too many branches in this game, too many options for significant or insignificant things, i really like how the characters have different dialogue depending on what you do or what you find (collectibles, clues etc.) really well done imo. Technically, i think the use of SSR in this game is one of the best I've seen so far this gen, was Killzone: Shadowfall just as good? I haven't played that game in a long time, and only played around the campaign.

I'm curious how divergent the butterfly effects are. They made a big deal out choices for the Witcher 3 (along with your impact on the world) but in actual fact there were only a few decisions that impacted the world in any significant way and I was a little disappointed given all the hype - although not with the game overall. The Walking Dead (the Telltale game) was also disappointing in this regard as you were presented with choices that really made no difference because some characters would live and die regardless of your decisions. My expectations for Until Dawn are more grounded.

But if I get 2 or 3 varied playthroughs in the next few weeks I'll be happy :yep2:

I can't believe this is running real-time. Some scenes in UD are unreal. The guys at Supermassive are absolutely hammering the Ps4. Another thing i noticed they are doing, almost all objects cast high quality dynamic shadows, except really small ones like pebbles, these shadows are managed dynamically with lod as a binary on/off switch. It's a great addition imo.

The effect in motion:

Try at Playstation Trophies.org
Most likely there are trophies that require to experiment and get different endings/outcomes so they will have made a video or at least a guide, with some if not all the choices/branches in the game.

Ok, i just finished it. Rescued everyone, and man do the guys watching it at youtube/twitch miss a lot of the experience. That ending had my heart racing! I hope it sells so we can get another game like this
