Unreal Tournament III Discussion *renamed*

In practice, how much user-created content is distributed now through XBL?

Next to nothing. And by that I mean that you *could* count Red Vs. Blue episodes (Halo machinima) as user-created. ;)

Lord knows the entire 80-160 MS point system for gamer pics and themes would be completed invalidated with user-created content. "I have to pay to get a set theme that other users can have too? Don't see that enforced on PC."

And were the Gears of War maps free or did they charge? That might be an indication of how much publishers have a say in whether they charge or if they charge, what the pricing would be (look at record companies clashing with Apple over iTunes pricing).
The first pack was free. The second pack has a timed-fee, so it will be free in September (*cough* just in time for Halo 3!).

Anyways, I don't see why no one else has copied Ubisoft Montreal's solution with FarCry Instincts/Predator. They created a fairly robust map-making tool on the Xbox and maps could be shared between users. What a controversy that became, eh? Oh wait... :|

Even shared custom skins, such as those in Forza 2, are user generated content, and reports like these probably highlight why there may be any trepidation in user content becoming freely available. Irrespective of the delivery mechanism, it has to be controlled in some fashion.

7 GB vs 25 GB would mean a 4 dvd game, if we say they used every bit of space.

If the game takes up more than 14GB it would still be a 3 DVD game so yes they could just "ship it on more discs". But imagine the 20GB owners having to use half of their space for one game.

All just examples of course, but i can see why they might ship with fewer maps.

"He was speaking about upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 shooter Unreal Tournament 3 at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, and warned that "we may have fewer maps on the 360 version ... Blu-ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom".

Its not like Unreal 3 will sell on console like Gears and with the 360 version coming out later I doubt gimping the 360 version will affect anyone but Epic. Ports always suffer when they are released later on other consoles, gimping it, regardless if its due to the limitations of the 360, will only excerbate the effect of it coming late to the 360.

"He went on to add: "If you think down the road - well maybe the next UT beyond this one - on Blu-ray we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make."

Unless Epic plans on releasing Unreal4 with Unreal3 packed with it, I don't see why you would want to include a bunch of mods for a previous edition of your game on BluRay.

cross-platform between PS3 and PC?

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/813/813075p1.html
IGN's GameSpy provides multiplayer gaming technologies such as matchmaking, in-game and out-of-game messaging, persistent player communities, and competition systems. Its services are used by the world's top ten publishers and are currently featured in over 500 games. Today GameSpy and Epic Games announced a partnership to incorporate GameSpy's technology suite into Epic's Unreal Engine 3. The tech will immediately be available to any publishers or developers that license the engine.

The partnership pertains only to the PlayStation 3 and PC platforms, and will enable cross-platform play between the two.

Can't imagine MS would block online play between PC and X360. Did FFX1 for the Xbox allow play with PC users?

So if X360 gamers can play against PC gamers and if PS3 gamers can play against PC gamers, by the transitive property, X360 gamers could play with PS3 gamers?

Worlds collide, paying XBL gamers versus PS3 gamers playing for free!:devilish:

Shadowrun features cross-platform play. And yes, Squaresoft built cross-platform functionality into FF XI.

I just read a "hands on" preview of UT3 in PC Gamer. Seems like more of the same with better visuals, although the new Warfare mode sounds interesting.

But free content goes against the XBL business model whereas free mods is a PC tradition.

So there is a clash.

Look at the workarounds people are resorting to in order to get user-created NCAA football rosters for their X360s.

Actually, there should be no clash. What people think of as the clash was the battle between MS and Epic over free Gears maps. But, little caveat, MS publishes Gears, and as such can charge whatever they want for Gears DLC! MS has claimed they dont tell third parties what to charge (or not) for DLC.

This seems to be a common misnomer. People forget Gears is Microsoft's game..

7 GB vs 25 GB would mean a 4 dvd game,

Why do you say 7GB when DL DVD is 8.5 GB?

If you're going to do that, then you need to knock down the 25GB theoretical Blu Ray spec to whatever it is in reality as well, say 22 or 23 GB.

Or you could do the reverse and say 8.5GB vs 22GB? It would be no different, just reversed..

This has been one problem with UT since the first.

Not that I'm not looking forward to it a ton, but they dont seem to innovate much, and what innovations they do are usually not for the better (aka hoverboards and that nonsense)

Well, it's 7GB for 360 games because that's all the room allowed on MS-format DL DVDs - it's not a guess on wco's part but a known quantity. With Sony it's stated the full 25GB because no one's heard otherwise, though that's not to say it might not be a gig or two short itself. A lot of folk on this forum I imagine would be able to speak to that though.

Someone said in the tech thread that it is ~7GB on the 360 and you are right, the BD is like 22-23GB. But that is still 4 DVDs.

The hoverboard is basically just for getting you back to the action quickly. Is that a bad thing?

At Games Convention this afternoon Epic Games demonstrated Unreal Tournament III PS3's new SixAxis controls - and they look to work really well.

The death-dealing superweapon, The Redeemer is now controlled in camera mode by tilting the PS3 pad from side to side - which in our demonstration looked to work without a hitch. Similarly, hoverboard controls now work using the tilt capabilities of the PS3, twisting the pad to perform spins and tricks.

The console version itself is looking in great shape; the version we saw today was running at a solid 60fps and looked near-identical with the PC counterpart, which was also running side by side. Mouse and keyboard support is also confirmed, although Epic wouldn't say anything when we quized them about crossplatform play.

An Xbox 360 version is due out sometime next year, although Epic says it's currently concentrating on getting it out on PS3 and PC before Christmas.
