Unreal Tournament III Discussion *renamed*

I just don't think MS will ever sacrifice the "LIVE" experience for user mods. Too many cheaters and hackers out there. As tight as LIVE currently is and as little as I have played Halo2 online, it sucks when you get matched with some modders. It completely ruins the fun of the game, unless you like being unfairly killed the whole time. If they can find a way to allow it which doesn't sacrifice network security, then maybe. We'll see.
Is a cheat possible without injecting a custom native-code module? AFAIK there's no modchip for PS3 or a cracked firmware yet and IIRC UT MODs don't/can't contain native code now. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Wouldn't a system on the 360 where mods could be downloaded for a fee and the mod teams could share in those profits be beneficial? But then you violate one of the rules of xbox live where content offered for free on another console can't be charged for on xbox live. Which ubisoft found out the hard way with their Rainbow Six map packs.

Honestly I'd pay for UT mods like Tac Ops or Strike Force. But then the community gets splintered like on Rainbow Six where 99% of all people playing the free maps and after paying for map packs their useless cause you cant find any games.

MS really needs to give this issue some attention and not see it as another revenue stream.

That OXM article is really beginning to seem like they met bizarro Epic. Rein said in an interview with GameSpot at E3 that "we just haven't done a lot of recent development on the 360."

Yeah, Dan and the other guys at OXM were pissed when they heard. They posted about it on their forums. Which reminds me, I need to listen to their podcast to see what they found out.

Is it the one shown at the conference? It doesn't say it's PC or PS3, I'd like to watch a cam footage of gameplay at a PS3 kiosk.
I read that Midway only brought the PS3 version to show off, the PC version wasn't there.

Besides, would the guy really be playing it with a controller if it was on PC?

Adam Hanson interview about UT3, with game parts shown (HD interview video). It looks good but im a bit disappointed with the bullets/ricochets as I was hopping they would illuminate the sorroundings (for example the rockets illuminate its flight path). The explosions also lacked that illumination I was expecting, hope they have something in the final game though.

Also at the end of this HD interview with Cliffy B about the PC GoW version there is some info about release date about the PS3 version of UT3.

The 1Up Show mentioned that they had both the PC and PS3 versions running side-by-side, and that the PS3 version looked virtually identical.

Will owners of various consoles be able to compete each other online as well as PC owners? I am interested to know

Also some info on KB and Mouse support would be nice

Yeah really.

That is one of the differentiation between PS3 and X360, that Sony won't stand in the way of KB/M support.

Will Epic push it though? Wouldn't their base be PC so why go out of the way to make the PS3 version so flexible?

You know they sell Guitar Hero games with that specialized controller.

So there is a console market for using alternate input than the gamepads. Hell, Epic should look into a bundling deal for a cheap, black KB/M set.

So make it sound like such a big deal, but you completely forget that they supported mouse and keyboard already for Unreal Championship way back in the early days of PS2. Unfortunately that just wasn't really all that good a game, or people would probably have remembered better. ;)

This time, it'll be interesting to see what they do. Certainly there is a market for it, and I think they will do it, quite simply because the PC and PS3 games look to be pretty much the same. At the same time, it seems that the sixaxis controller is supported quite well for controlling the hoverboard and such and FPS controls have come a long way on the consoles since then, so it's not as important as it used to be.

But I think, quite simply because there is a fairly large buzz about it, they'll do it and support mouse and keyboard. The question then remains whether or not there will be options in game to say that a match should be controller only or keyboard/mouse only, etc. We'll see.

I thought it looked amazing at points, mainly outdoor were there was water and just good at other points (mainly the small indoor sections). I t was difficult to tell though due to the video quality, was probably offscreen on the PS3.

Aliasing didn't look too great either, again, could have been the video quality or could be a console limitation.

Incidentally, here's another video - interview with Mark Rein.

He sayds the game runs better on PS3 now than Gears did on the 360 this time last year.... which says very little really. He also confirms that the game won't be 1080/60fps athough wasn't clear if it would have one or the other - alough his attitude seemed to suggest not.

Thanks for the link. About the comment I would interpret it as the framerate for UT3 on PS3 is ~30fps fluid in contrary to GoW which had some framerate issues (correct me if wrong). Catious choosen words but very cryptic to.

Becouse otherwise GoW and UT3 only has the engine type in common and a ~year has passed and things inprove with time.

I thought GoW was 30fps during the gameplay, just the in game cutscenes were choppy. I assume that the PS3 UT will have sync off to allow for max frame rate (at the expense of tearing), this is common for twitch shooters.

Yeah, GoW was very smooth game except cut-scenes. I don't know about multiplayer though, didn't play it, but I heard that it has framerate issues, especially on newer maps.

Slightly off-topic, but related to the exclusivity... *apparently*

So what will 360 owners love about Unreal Tournament III?

Rein: It rocks. It's so much fun to play on console. There's a little bit of auto-aim like on Gears... what I like is none of our success on console has affected our games on PC. We have mods on UT for PlayStation3 and...

What about the 360 version?

Rein: To bring mods to 360, we're going to have to make some serious changes.

So you're not going to include them?

Rein: Oh, it's going to happen but 360 is a closed system so we have to work with Microsoft on that.
He also reveals that this is the reason that UT3 is delayed on the 360.

Epic have confirmed the PC version will have additional graphical options over the console versions:

http://www.beyondunreal.com/content/articles/198_1.php

"We’ve authored our content to support scaling the visual bar to match your system’s specs. With texture streaming support on all platforms, there won’t be much difference in texture fidelity based on your hardware, but high end PCs will see differences in character detail, dynamic lighting, etc."

Sounds better than the usual "higher res textures and screen resolution" :D

I remember an interview with a UT3 dev some months ago where he said that it was running good with ~G7x ('06 GPUs) hardware and running super with ~G80 (maybe also 7900GT/GTX?) hardware at high resolution (I'll see if I can find the interview).

Here is one link with translated part but it is not the whole interview.

Since optimization work is still ongoing, these details may change every day. Generally speaking, the game runs quite smooth with DX9 hardware released by NVidia and Ati since 2006. On high-end cards, including the DX10 models, UT3 runs incredibly smooth already.

It’s like Gears on more potent steroids. :runaway:

It’s better to save the pictures to your computer (most are 1280x720 if not all).
