Unreal Tournament III Discussion *renamed*

Probably?!

Gears used texture streaming to free up lots of memory; which brings me to my question. Is the PS3 version of UT3 using the Blu-Ray drive for texture streaming or the HDD? I haven’t heard any info on the subject…

Perhaps it uses both the HDD and Blu-Ray?

Have there been any words if this game requires HDD for the xbox360 version?

games can use the HDD and not have the HDD required.

It is an "if available use it" switch.

of course I'd guess core would suffer if a game is dependant on it.

streaming aint the "magical bullet" some apparently think it is.
if you assume 10MB/s sustained read and 30 FPS, you can *theoreticaly* read ~300KB per frame. Ignoring other problems like latency, this is still far from saving you from memory constraints, you simply cant just assume streaming will sort everything out. it only helps if you want diverse sections on the map, so you have areas which use different textures and those required can be streamed (in advance!) as you are moving towards the area. Apparently the speed at which you are moving is of concern too, and if UT3 is anything like the last games then you are suddenly transfered to a (possibly distant) spawnpoint quite often - streaming would totally fail here.

Very good post Npl; I've tried to put this into words before but you've done it way better :)

if the PS3 can't run them well, then my slightly dated PC won't either and i don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. still the PS3 version for me.

Well if you have a 7900GT or better then you will run the game very good in DX9/10 mode £max detail according to Mark Rein (link to interview is in one of the UT3 threads).

i only have a 7800 GT. :( i'm sure it would run it fine, but not completely smooth depending on what settings.
i could just upgrade my video card (2GB of ram and 3800+ X2 at 2.5Ghz) but if i were to upgrade my video card, i'd want to get something worthy of an upgrade and that would cost me probably around $200 CAD.

i guess i could.
but even then, i won't know what the PS3 version looks like compared to the PC version running on the best settings my PC can handle. plus i'd really prefer playing on my 40" HDTV with surround. i used to be a PC gamer, but now i'm turning into a console gamer exclusively (only PC game i play i CS:S). i'm even considering buying orange box for PS3 even though i have HL2 and HL2 EP1.

Seems like a couple more demanding PC levels will be left out.

Mark Rein said that they are shooting for a November release and did say that the PS3 version would have "most" of the content that would be found in its PC brother. He said that there would be a couple of maps that would be left out of the PS3 version simply because the system didn't have the resources to produce a smooth gameplay experience.

Also, this doesn't sound all that encouraging what with recent rumors of a delay

Our last map was with the game mode Warfare and the map Torlan, an old favorite from Unreal Tournament 2003. We immediately sought out the hoverboard, jumped on, and started maneuvering the speedy mode of transportation with SIXAXIS controls. Things felt just as tight as always, but as soon as we entered into a firefight the entire level froze up and the game crashed on us. Much to our heart's dismay, our reasonably lengthy play session with Unreal Tournament 3 had come to an end.

I've also gotta wonder, given mostly poor software sales so far on PS3, if Epic is questioning their decision to go PS3 timed exclusive right now. As of latest NPD the install bases are 6.2 million 360 and 1.75 million PS3. Seems like it'd be required to sell to 50% of PS3 userbase to hit a million (not counting Europe, I guess, not sure if UT3 sells in Europe?).

I dunno, I'll be terribly interested in this titles sales on PS3.

My PC does both. But playing UT3 on a dual shock vs a Keyboard and Mouse?? I know which setup I'll be taking advantage of for this game.

Same would be true for HL2, in fact im playing HL2:E1 on my monitor at the moment, Started off with the 360 control pad on my TV but couldn't hack it. Now Bioshock on the other hand - I would happily play that on the TV because the movement and combat seems designed around a control pad.

unfortunately for me, i don't have my PC hooked up to my HDTV. and to hookup my surround sound to my PC wouldn't be as easy to do. and UT3 on PS3 supports kb/m btw.

I wonder how one plays in a good and comfortable position from the sofa with a mouse and keyboard. I mean putting it on the table infront means I have to be in a compact position that does no good to my back.
Are there to buy some kind of support or "mini-table" to put on ones knees as a support perhaps (or maybe make one)?

Neverthless good it is good that the PS3 version (xbox360?) has support for keyboard and mouse.

UT3 wouldn't sell too well in this holiday season on the 360 anyway, with COD4, Bioshock, and of course Halo3 competing for FPS fans' money...

Yeah, doesn't work very well on a couch though unfortunatly - otherwise I would play all my games on the TV!

You can lower settigns on the PC version to make it run better. I doubt you'll be able to do the same on the concole versions. Quality will probably be locked as it is with most games.

It is not hard to imagine that hardcore PC gamers will always choose to run the game on a dedicated gaming box. The game will appeal to people who don't have a powerful PC, or don't plan to keep one. Many people like me only have a laptop. Some have assorted issues with their PCs.

As long as Epic manages the users' expectation well, the mod factor should be interesting to console gaming. I am skeptical about UT3 modding because of potential memory limitations compared to a gaming PC. I think this is to be expected.

Given that some (many ?) developers are having a hard time with the UE3 engine on 360 and PS3, it'd be quite an achievement if Epic got modding to work at a reasonable level.

thats the point though, the game is optimized to run on PS3 at good framerates. i'm going to have to kind of optimize the game myself to run on my hardware, and i doubt it will look and run as pretty as it does on my PS3.

i doubt they left many maps out of the PS3 version. i don't see what the big deal is.

Dollar for dollar, buying the ps3 version is probably a better option than upgrading a pc solely for that purpose, but the lack of access to certain maps on ps3 I'm sure will dissuade some from going that route. There's no dearth of multiplayer shooters coming for the PC in the near future; I think it might actually sell more on ps3 because of that.

Ouch (though not that implausible, must be hard memory-restrictions on PS3). And looking further its likely that big mods will have to be cut down (or simply not done) for PS3

That was one of my concerns with PC-to-Console mods and a reason for reserved optimism. My experience with mods is that you typically get the Game Overhead + Mod, so they tend to be more demanding than the [frequently optimized] core game.

Maybe we will see "PS3 Distros" of mods? Gameplay compatible mods that work within the confines of console limitations?
