Uncharted 4: A Thief's End [PS4]

Aside from the QTE's (which are always dumb) I thought the gameplay in the Tomb Raider reboot was pretty fun. If anything I thought it felt like a more streamlined version of Uncharted 2 gameplay. The story was a bit poor, it felt like the game was just beating the shit out of Lara for 6-7 hours, so I hope U4 can be kinder to Drake. As much as I complain about the Uncharted series' story the games do have a grand sense of fun adventure about them and I'd hate to lose that to the "so dark and edgy xD" mindset writers seem to be in love with these days.

Exactly what I didn't like about it. It seemed silly... dark for the sake of being dark... and look at all the stuff that she endures.... ugh... just felt like a hollow experience. Regardless of what the sales say, I still think Tomb Raider peaked with Underworld, and I absolutely loved Anniversary.
IMO, I like Uncharted (over Tomb Raider) exactly for it's linearity. I don't want an open environment that can be explored, but more an adventure that takes me from one location, to the next. UC2 remains my favorite Uncharted game to date, because IMO, the pace of the game was perfect, the shooting quantity was great (not too much, and it didn't feel to much like a progression of sandboxes, like UC1 did) and I also found the overal theme and locations superb. The hights of the Tibet mountains definately was more to my liking than the desert theme of UC3.

UC3 at times felt a bit too much like a blockbuster - where you're basically going from one spectacle to the next. I think UC2 offered just as much (even if technically on a lower level), but did a better job. I.e. I still that train ride is some of the best and most impressive parts in any of the Uncharted games. As is also the first part when you find yourself in a colapsing building (Tibet).

Still, what I liked about UC3 is that they went for even more variety. The running part (at the beginning as young drake) were a change and I think overal the gameplay mechanics were a tad bit better.

I hope UC4 will be somewhere between UC2 and UC3. Good variety, but perhaps less "block-buster" style, but still a linear gameplay experience.
Yea 2 was really great, definitely the peak of the series for me as well. I also wonder why 3 dropped the amazing cheat system from Uncharted 1 and 2, I had a blast doing all those slow-mo and infinite ammo and level reverse shenanigans lol.

But for some reason I've started to think I like the first game better.... it felt more campy, I get that vibe from this Uncharted 4 trailer. Something to fit Drake's character even better.

Also this character made the experience a whole lot better, that final sequence with him was amazing :)

And for fun... who remembers Doughnut Drake? Just was reminded of this from YT suggestions :p

Yeah, mirrored levels, doughnut Drake, no gravity mod in UC2, Eddy Raja and UC3 co-op: All Uncharteds are super enjoyable in their own way. I love 1 for its 'little sandbox' levels, 2 for everythiing it did, it was just perfect  and 3 for the young Drake, the amazing ship/falling from the sky/canyon levels and the superb split-screen co-op ! When ND announced UC3, I thought I had had too much of Uncharted and UC3 is being churned out too quick, but they completely changed my mind with the game. Even with the unpolished gunplay, the game was totally worth playing.

UC4 is too far away for me to feel happy :( !

I doubt Uncharted 4 IQ will be like this trailer a PS4. I am not a specialist but I think they render in realtime the scene on a PS4 at 4k and a framerate between 1 fps and 60 fps for example and after they downsample and run the video at 60 frame per second. If not it is incredible and far away from all the other game for IQ.

I think often on offline rendering the scene are rendered at least 16x the targeted resolution maybe rendering at 2 or 4 times the resolution is not enough to clean all the artefact...

And I am not a PS4 troll, it is my only console. I expect this IQ on PS5 in 1080p..

Higher resolution samples have been disproven between DF and a few other well known sites. ND has created a very interesting demo, using phenomenal techniques (IQ wise) in a very limited scene.

I think the resolution they use don't give enough sample for hide all artefact! But I am not sure and if it is realtime very good but I will be like Saint Thomas believe what I see with my own eyes on my PS4. I just speak about IQ... All the other stuff will be like this. For example, I think like Uncharted and Uncharted 2, Nathan Drake will have the same model during cutscene and gameplay....

I think the end of trailer is a transition from cutscene to gameplay.

What some are failing to see, it's a demo... a limited and controlled scene showing one character (Drake). I'm pretty sure UC4 real-time cutscene's will be very detailed, with lots of pretty shaders, lighting, shadows, etc... of what the demo is trying to convey. Gameplay wise, we'll see some of the best stuff ND is capable of... great art style, and everything else that goes along with it.

I have the same doubts, but then again; remember GOW3 on PS3? I think even on this board experts thought it was offline-rendered, bullshot, supersampled, non-realtime screenshots. Nobody could have ever predicted PS3 outputting that image quality, let alone at an average of 40-45 frames per second.

I think PS4 can do it; it's just using next-generation AA algorithms that's all

GOW 3's IQ was all right. It wasn't as big of a thing. MLAA managed to hide most of the things, but it still wasn't perfect. When I think of GOW 3's IQ, Infamous SS's IQ comes to mind. Which is impressive. I think UC4 is probably using some supersampling method in that trailer, we might not see it make the cut in the final version. I just don't see anything beyond what we already have, all the AA methods right now are excellent.

Back then, GOW3s IQ sure was astounding. Just go back in the thread an re-read the reaction of the experts.

GoW3 anti-aliasing was simply phenomenal, and it influenced many studios to fully switch to pixel shader AA techniques.

UC4 could be using a similar AA technique as ISS. The thing to remember is that ISS and GOW3's post-process AA techniques work best in low contrast scenes.

The UC4 teaser - which was a very short teaser to be fair - was all dark low contrast scenes. I'm not sure you can make the conclusion then that the superb IQ was due to supersampling.

Quite interesting that most of the studios didn't do it in same place in pipeline.
What makes GoW MLAA different is that DoF and motion blur were done after the MLAA pass, so all those blurry edges got the treatment as well.

Agreed. God of War 3, proved a lot about the PS3 hardware.

The third game's legendary titan boss set-pieces looked and played with an almost CG-like level of polish, astonishing many with its breathtaking per-pixel lighting, rich detailing and pristine motion blur effects. The sheer scale of ambition on display here was simply breathtaking and even today, God of War 3 ranks as one of the best platform exclusives on the market.

Fellow graphics engineer Ben Diamand also confirms it was a hectic spell for the studio after the unveiling, and many tweaks in the build-up to the game's release came down to the wire. "There were so many major technical improvements that went in between E3 and shipping," he says. "Morphological anti-aliasing (MLAA) got added which improved edges dramatically and saved substantial amounts of frame-rate."

The MLAA technology represented a break-through for developers at the time. Developed by SCEE's own Advanced Technology Group (ATG), it's now a popular edge-detection process that can cost-effectively remove jagged edges from each frame - one of a range of GPU tasks that were hived off to the Cell processor's surrounding Synergistic Processing Units (SPUs). Crucially, for Santa Monica Studio's effects artists, this freed up processing cycles and allowed them to add to the spectacle in other ways.

I expect nothing but greatness from the SSM studio and Naughty Dog when it comes to mastering the PS4 hardware.

well, it is their slogan after all

But in all seriousness: they have created high expectations. UC3 was absolutely phenomenal at times. Extrapolate that to PS4 hardware and I think that in a few years people will look back at UC4 and say: "lol the reveil was so lame in comparison to UC5!" Yes, greatness awaits :)

Wish they would also add a 30fps option with more graphics features just like TLOU remastered :). I think this is the best move ND has made for TLOU.

You mean the "feature" they added on a whim that the developer even says outright people shouldn't use because 30fps is shit?

No. Just.... NO.
