Tomb Raider

im interested in Tomb raider DE. I loved Uncharted 2.. uncharted 3 not so much... I want to see where the genre goes this go round.

During jumps that lead to cut-scenes maybe, but it all seemed very consistent during actual gameplay. I especially loved jumping around high up in the mountain village. It just worked so well. Even deliberately missing jumps in order to catch ziplines far below yielded positive results. I simply wasn't expecting it to be quite as free-form as it was.

No there were times where I made a jump and knew within a fraction of a second that I had misjudged the distance only to have Lara magically glide to the edge like a flying squirrel. It became obvious, when I misjudge a jump during a night scene by like 10 feet and she still made it.

It doesn't seem to happen during set piece where a lot of jumping is involved. I fell to my death many times by being off just a few inches.

What funny to me is that this TR basically flips the whole typical archaeological adventure premise on its head. TR is not an archaeology based adventure.
Its more of a archaeology based horror story. Your whole goal is not about finding some treasure then escaping, but "f@#$ the treasure (or archaeological find) because we need to get the hell out of here now!!!".
Its different from UC in that regard.

Thanks for your advice, game is certainly picking up, at least gameplay wise. ;)

As for the speaker thing, I have found a separate volume control for the speaker on the controller, but no option to prevent sound that comes through the controller speaker from coming through the regular stereo. Because of that, the sound gets a kind of strange echo, that sometimes works, but sometimes is just silly.

It would be much nicer if the sound only came out of the controller for some of this stuff.

That speaker thing will be a problem for me, I play with my headphones on, as I have little daughter in the house. No way I can hear any "immersive" stuff from my controller. Ihave turned off the volume of my controller's speaker, will that make sure those sounds are redirected to my main audio?
In KZSF, turning off the controller speaker meant you won't hear the audiologs at all. It was very annoying for me as I Had to take off my headphones everytime I wanted to listen to an audiolog :-/ ! Is it the same in TR or are the sounds sent via main audio too?

Edit: LOL, Arwin , you are asking for the exact opposite of what I am asking for :p !

There is an in-game option to disable the DS4 speaker. In doing so, all audio that would come through the speaker goes through your normal audio output device.

This game has really good Vita controls and looks shockingly good on the smaller screen!

Everything from the PS4 will look very good on the Vita, since the games are rendered at 1080p and then downscaled to the Vita's 540p (which results exactly into 4 pixels on the PS4 for every 1 pixel in the Vita).
You may only struggle with smaller text once in a while (which I found in Don't Starve).

The icons in Don't Starve are also a little on the small side.

I am glad there is. I don't see quite the point of the additional audio via the controller speaker. I have a home theatre system and the audio is immersive enough.

Great game though !!

Seems that the PS4 has voice and gesture control as well ? I saw something in options but didn't try it out. Did anybody ?

The reason why they have the speaker is to make the player have direct experience with certain sounds that should come directly from his location/character. I.e gun sound in a FPS should come out out of the gun you are holding not from the front speaker a few meters away from you. Just giving an idea. I imagine this would be ideal for a silent hill game. The white noise should be coming from the radio you are holding ;) There should be a few smart uses too if the developer is creative enough. Kojima might find some innovative uses

The controller speaker is a neat gimmick but it's pretty much useless for anything tangible. When I fire a gun I want to hear a loud high fidelity BANG....not some low volume sound from a tinny little speaker.

I think it would be cool for a Walkie Talkie/CB sound output device since in real life those things have poor noisy sound quality anyway....but that's about all it could be used for unless somebody surprises me non-gimicky uses.

Spoken by a person who hasn't used it, it is a cool and should be standard feature next gen.

My audio equipment was thousands of dollars, but I prefer radio conversations and audiologs etc., to come through the controller speaker, because it really creates an effect that you're holding a radio or little audio playing device.. makes it a bit more immersive. I haven't played the DE yet so I'll reserve judgement on the gun sounds.

So why don't you provide some evidence of a non gimmicky use that is so cool other than what I already mentioned?

Do real gun shots sound like they're coming from a 1 watt speaker held in your hand?

No, but the sound of the brass hitting the floor does. And the speaker is surprisingly clear, something like that would be a good use in a shooter.

I only have two games in which it's used (Knack and Resogun) and neither of them strikes me as "gimmicky", even if it doesn't really affect anything.

I agree the controller speaker actually adds to the game. I was not interested in it at all, but it does add little nuances, the audio logs did sound right coming from the controller speaker. I would like my sword sounds to come from the controller when I play Warframe. IIRC< the Wii started this concept, didn't it? Wii controller had a built in speaker.
But the concept doesn't work in my case, as I game with Headphones. I have to add the speaker is very loud and clear for how tiny it is.

Could be interesting for games like Outlast or other such horror games, where they could play whispers or other eerie sounds from the controller speaker to mess with you.

Which reminds me, if you set ps4 display resolution to 720p the games are still rendered in 1080p and then scaled to 720p.
So if game has some annoying aliasing this gives slightly softer image with ~2xSSAA.

This looks quite good as most games have some form of post AA already and edges are quite well defined which helps TV scaler to scale it 'properly' back to 1080p.

Susurration would work well from the DS4. The quality of the speaker is surprising given it's location and the audio logs in KZ were a really good use for it.

The speaker might be arguable, but what in gods name were they thinking when they added that LED effect that everytime you light up a flare the controller starts to flicker in orange, yellow and red?

Seriously... it's especially annoying given the fact that everytime a cutscene cuts in or you disable the flare, the light goes back to a rather bright white. In fact, it's so annoying that when people do actually play these games in a dark room, it's way too obvious and distracting.

This is actually the first time I've considered getting some duct tape to hide that stupid LED of the controller. I can live with a constant light, but not that stupid flickering that is totally unnecessary and adds nothing to the overal experience, besides getting annoyed about it.
