Tomb Raider

The DE looks does look "off" in comparison pictures but it looks great in game. This may be one of those technologies where more realism isn't always preferred much like you don't always want fully realistic lighting if you're trying to create a specific atmosphere.

I can definitely appreciate that. Sometimes screenshots is the wrong way to do it, need to play the darned game and see the complete vision. The black crush should have been the clue, one you see that you know that it's not really realism they are going for but a specific look, and there's nothing wrong with that. End of the day I'm glad the game is being talked about because I really liked it and look forward to more.

Having progressed more into the game where I'm now engaging in combat, the higher frame rate really makes a difference!

Welcome to 60fps, welcome :) If you game at that frame rate long enough then going back to 30fps literally becomes a shock to the system, it's almost impossible to go back.

Renegade brother what have you done! As much as I like Tomb Raider on PS4, graphically it's still not KZ caliber overall. Isn't there any ps360 games that you can trade in?

I am not really worried about losing KZSF. I have played it twice and. tough I love the MP, I am hooked to Warframe meaning I don't get to play anything else. What I am worried about is that this money was supposed to be for Infamous :D ! Now I will need to arrange funds for that next month and Sony's new super high prices for ps4 games over here is not helping me at all !

True that. PS4 has spoilt me early with fab 60 fps games and I know 30 fps titles are in bound and I am dissappointed person. Its the major reason I don't play AC4 anymore. Every other game is so damn smooth that it just feels so wrong, as if the game is not letting me play, putting a restraint on it.
One of the reasons I ordered TR. I want another SP with 60 fps and this game seems to have a really good atmosphere to boot !and its been very long since I completed a TR game. A change from the regular sequels will help my jaded feeling with games.

I am not really new to 60 fps, but 60 fps with such blitzy gfx, as if there are no compromises, yeah ! I hope this trend continues, although I am sure it won't as studios will try to outdo each other in terms of gfx.

Well, within a drought of good games for the new consoles, it seems even a respin of a 1 year-old game becomes an astounding success:

UK chart: Tomb Raider Definitive Edition top
Square Enix's Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has taken top place in the latest UK all-format chart.
1

69 per cent of Tomb Raider copies were bought for PlayStation 4, UK numbers company Chart-Track revealed, leaving just 31 per cent on Xbox One.

The next-gen re-release is the first major launch of the year, and the first time in weeks that FIFA 14 has slipped into second place.

That said, FIFA was still less than 500 copies behind.

The rest of the top 10 remained largely unchanged - so too with the whole top 40. Call of Duty: Ghosts was third, Battlefield 4 fourth and Lego Marvel fifth.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag sixth, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition seventh, GTA5 eighth, Need for Speed: Rivals ninth, while Killzone: Shadow Fall was 10th.

Tomb Raider came out 11 months ago, not two years!

I wonder how many people bought it again compared to it being their first play through. I've not seen any sales figures since last August where it was announced it had sold 4m copies worldwide which is a far cry from the 150+ million 360/PS3 consoles sold.

I've bought and played this for an hour, but this doesn't hold a torch to Uncharted to me so far. Problem in particular is that the art isn't nearly as good, the characters suck, and the world really isn't one I want to be in. Also, I expect to be able to follow water downstream and that it then makes sense.

I'll stick to it for a bit though.

I second Jokers thoughts. Stick to it. I really really didn't like the game at first - but it does get much better. The mechanics are very similar to Uncharted though - and IMO quite close (which isn't an easy feat IMO, as Uncharted put forward a very high standard) and the story gets better as you keep playing.

BTW; as for my impressions of the game so far;
Some parts look very last-gen, while the forest is simply beautiful. Nice.

Only a couple of games have sol over 10m on consoles.
Countless of games never even manged to sell 4 mil on PC and consoles put together.

Sure, but if we assume the early adopters of Xbox One and PS4 are more likely to buy new games, then there's 7m of those out there - probably more than 8m at this point. That's quite a captive audience given the next big games due are, I believe, inFamous Second Son and Thief 4 next month.

I cant think of a game this gen with the potential to sell almost as much as the launch units it was released on unless its a superb system seller the likes of Halo or Gran Turismo. Dont forget there are also other games to choose from and the consoles come at a hefty price

I didn't say it would sell as well at launch, I am just not surprised it's a big seller breaking out on top of UK's multiformat charts.

Ok, that's encouraging to hear. I'll give it a bit more time then.

Yeah, definately do. At the end of the day, even if you prefer the Uncharted games (I do too), I think Tomb Raider does enough to distinguish itself as its own game, despite the very similar style and gameplay mechanics.

When I first started playing it, I was a bit annoyed by the constant "i am so weak, please come and help me" dialog - but appreciate that this plays into the story and it being a prequel, Lara being young etc. As the game progresses, it'll more and more turn into the Tomb Raider game I was hoping to find; exploring, nice open-esque environments, the story tightens up and the XP-points upleveling start to gain traction when you build up on your tools and weapons - which also significantly improves the combat (which IMO started a bit as an annoyance but got better eventually).

Mid way through the game, I couldn't stop and when I finally completed the game, it ended up being a very satisfying experience, very solid game and best of all; a great appetizer to the next game, that hopefully will build up and extend on what they have achieved with this one.

I still think Uncharted is hard to beat though - it's just such a solid game, good fun and Naughty Dog really knows how to wow the player with its blockbuster-esque moments.
But I think half way through Tomb Raider, you'll appreciate that this stands apart and has its own charm.

Just finished. Definitely a step up in the looks department and I can't quite get over how much difference the 60fps makes to the game play, especially during fire fights. I did try playing some back to back with the PS3 and the difference is quite extreme.

There are sections where the levels decals haven't been touched and they are a little obvious but for the most part the resolution increase makes up for this. And on the section where you do get to stand still and admire the view it is very pretty.

Now I'm just hungry for my next adventure, be it Uncharted or something new and fresh!

Finished it over the weekend as well. Technically it's really quite impressive looking for the most part, even if it's no Killzone Shadowfall. Artistically I think it's absolutely brilliant though. Other than that not much has changed. It's always been mechanically slick - seriously, Uncharted could learn a thing or two from TR's organic and satisfying traversal mechanics - and it's always been completely at odds with its pathetic and tryhard grimdark storyline. The way Lara easily decimates armies of hardened islanders which have been doing that kinda shit for years or possibly decades is just ridiculous. Now there's something where the next installment of the series could take more than a couple of hints from Naughty Dog's latest. Implement a well thought out health system. Dial down enemy numbers and make them an actual threat instead. Give me some options during combat. And for goodness sakes, stop it with the collectibles overkill and pointless rpg mechanics. When half the skills you can obtain do nothing more than accellerate the process of filling up even more needless bars you might wanna go back to the drawing board. It's the primary reason why this is such a once-is-enough kinda game for me. The prospect of having to hunt down and pry open all the countless chests and boxes all over again is one hell of a turnoff for me.
Seriously, a big fuck you to Assassin's Creed for kickstarting this everything and the kitchen sink approach to game design.

Black Flag worked for me exactly because it was so varied. Some days I could sail and plunder, other days I could stalk and assassinate and other days I could roam and collect treasure, or chests, or wrecks, or do bar fights.

But almost of it skippable if you just wanted to plough through the story.

It's not really skippable in TR if you want some decent gear unfortunately. Black Flag also doesn't constantly try to hammer home just how urgent your primary mission is, so all the extraneous activities don't feel quite as crowbared in as they do in TR where you're constantly in a rush to try and avert the untimely death of your thoroughly useless shipmates. Harpooning a white whale or assassinating a target is also ever so slightly more exciting than picking 10 mushrooms in a forest. My point is that there's a place and a time for this kinda game design (even though Black Flag wore me out for that very reason as well), but I feel it's not in a high octane, set-piece driven cover shooter.

Yup, AC4 "extra-stuff" got old very very soon for me and th emain game is utter crap, anyways. What a bummer as I was really excited by AC4 when I got my ship for the first time.

FC3 was the best. Everything was inside the game world. Nothing felt like it was an "extra" and it was all super fun !

Still waiting for my TR to arrive. All the complaints by you guys are putting a downer on my excitment too. ALso, there is Warframe  ...it won't let me play it anyways, unless TR ggrips me from the get go ! You see, I have my Rhino Warframe waiting for some Red stuff and then it will be ready and I will need to smash people in face with my Rhino smash !

It is still a fun game. In some regards it's actually pretty outstanding. Like I said, I think the traversal mechanics are pretty damn fantastic. Climbing around in TR feels nothing like the scripted on-rails traversal you get in Uncharted for example. It's really fluid, really consistent, very organic and incredibly responsive. It almost feels like a 3d jump and run, except somehow they managed to make it all feel very grounded. Lara feels incrediobly connected to the world despite the fact that you even have a ton of air control in the game. There aren't really any instances where she'll suddenly jump twice as far because a set-piece demands it. Neither are there any jumps you'll just fail because that's not where the game wants you to go. That part of the game is a lot of fun. Controlling Lara is an absolute delight in general. Combat in and on itself is pretty damn great as well. It's just way too effortless and arcadey for a game telling a story about harsh survival. Lara doesn't survive the island in that game. The island survives her. The action in that game is just completely at odds with the narrative at all times.
I think if they tone down the manslaughter for the sequel and expand the traversal and puzzle aspects, the next TR could be utterly spectacular.

For what it's worth, I think in terms of pure mechanics, TR is completely mopping the floor with Uncharted.

Oh, and I love how Nixxes used the DS4. What a fantastic piece of hardware that controller is.
