Tomb Raider

I wonder how much further ingame model can be pushed in this gen.
Quite a bit, I would imagine. New model, but still a last-gen game engine. It's shaders that will win the battle this time, rather than polygons and textures. If the next game is truly built from scratch for PS4/XB1 (I have severe doubts), there should be quite a jump from what we're seeing here.

I've just realised a downside to the faster, slicker, play. The annoying sections where you can just die without seeing what is was that killed you just happen a lot faster. I was kind of hoping they might have tweaked the gameplay and adjusted those parts that were derided originally. The water slides are a prime example, it's really hard to see anything with all the new particle effects etc!!

Just started playing again. The framerate makes a big difference to the feel of the game, when you have a torch and the flames are touching the ceiling they pool out like water. Very realistic.

From the videos I've seen the torch flame doesn't have very realistic physics when Laura waves it around...it's very stiff...

Considering they added physics to objects she carries it's a strange omission...

Videos must be pretty poor quality then. The flame physics is completely fluid, in fact if it wasn't for the fact it is so clean it might be real flame footage.

So there's no omission, just poor footage.

Can you post a video showing realistic physics while she is holding the torch and running or moving around? From the videos I've seen when she's neck deep in the murky water in the caves the flame looks very stiff...it's only noticeable when she moves the torch around. I'm not talking about the flames hitting the rock ceiling.

I have recorded some footage but the problem with that is the max framerate of the camera is 50Hz so even though it looks smooth in that its not as smooth as it is in real life (is that an oxymoron or have I just been playing games for too long?).

The vid is 155Mb which will take an hour or so to upload from here. So it should be ready by tomorrow!

Doesn't seem to me like they've done anything to her torch. Seems to be affected by the environment just fine too.

As for whether we can expect better faces or not in the future. I'd say we already got better ones. Especially in terms of animation. I think the new Lara Croft has problems not dissimilar to the Killzone Shadowfall characters. She looks eerily good in stills and almost as great if subtle expressions are not a requirement. The illusion breaks whenever characters have to interact with each other in a naturalistic manner unfortunately. The gap between rendering and animation quality is quite jarring. It's not as much of a problem with the way less realistic looking remaining characters.

I'd say Beyond's Jodie Holmes easily matches her in terms of modelling and shading while completely destroying her in terms of animation quality. RE6 and all the Assassin's Creed games since Revelations 've had tremendous facial animations as well, and lots and lots of 'em too. If you only accept current gen I'd say Ryse clearly has it beat too.

Still a stunning looking game, though. I really love how the new physics systems have brought the environments to life. On the flipside I'm a bit torn about the 21st century boilerplate action movie color grading on display. The deep shadows and saturated colors add a little to the drama here and there, but it also tends to take away from the depth and scale of the environments. At least it's not orange and teal.

By the way, did they tone down the violence a tad for the new version or am I just imagining things. Seems like the camera doesn't linger quite as long and pornographically on Lara's lifeless body after the many over.the-top death scenes as it did in the past. Not complaining at all by the way. I always thought those parts were kinda tasteless and wholly unnecessary.

I've bought and played this for an hour, but this doesn't hold a torch to Uncharted to me so far. Problem in particular is that the art isn't nearly as good, the characters suck, and the world really isn't one I want to be in. Also, I expect to be able to follow water downstream and that it then makes sense.

I'll stick to it for a bit though.

I played it for 30 minutes and the high frame rate just looks bloody weird. Perhaps because I already played it on PS3 or perhaps because I am now almost completely conditioned for third person shooters to be 30fps.

Based on my limited play I would say, if given the choice, I'd take 30fps and ramping up the visuals over 60fps for games like this. Maybe I'll change my mind with more play but having played the entirety of Assassin's Creed 4 on PS4 at 30fps, that is more than enough for me.
I really hope they add a 30fps frame lock because I'd probably switch it on even if the PS4's gubbins were idling a 40% of the time.

I on the other hand, really miss the 60 fps smoothness of BF4 and KZ when I play Ac4 :( ! That game can feel so much better at 60fps. I just feel odd when I turn the cam quickly and it just doesn't have that feel of BF4.
I am really happy Deep Down will 60 fps and so will be MGS V. I would want infamous to be too as its super fluid game.I can't expect Witcher 3 to be, considering it is gfx powerhouse, but I wish it could be.

On topic, strangley lots of stores had this for pre order here, but now that its time it isn't listed anywhere at all ! Weird ! Not available anywhere at all.

Definitely stick to it, I also thought it started kind of slow and posted as such in the pc forum way back but it gets much better. I never played Uncharted 3, but finished Uncharted 1 & 2, and definitely liked Tomb Raider much better than those games. A actually almost stopped playing Tomb Raider after about an hour in but stuck to it and glad I did, I ended up loving the game.

Man that's so funky, maybe people can get conditioned to frame rate. I dunno, I can't stomach 30fps on games at all anymore, it just looks and feels appalling to me now.

First person shooters are great in 60fps, although I had no issues with Killzone's 30fps single player campaign. Racers also look great at 60fps. Tomb Raider though.. weird. I'm going to throw in the dreaded 'cinematic' word. I think Tomb Raider is trying to be cinematic (like Uncharted) but the high frame rate is inconsistent with 30+ years of cinematic experience for me.

I played it only for about half an hour, with a bit more time I could completely change my mind. I'm changeable ;-)

Even though it's a fun game...no matter how much I play I can't bring myself to stop hating on this game, part of it is due to how it is such an insult to Tomb Raider and part of it is because this game is sooooo dumb !!! Why does every set piece event has to do something with the level collapsing? Even Uncharted doesn't has this much collapsing structures. And of course the character and the disparity between their actions in gameplay and cutscene.

I wish they'd have gone with the original idea of an open Japanese island with mystical creatures, where Lara had to progressively learn new skills and survival techniques (and not in the sense of +1 strength, +2 accuracy) through mentors she meets on the island over the course of the game, instead what we got was a dumb shooter. What's sad is that because of the success (well it only slightly more successful than the previous one, commercially speaking..but it generated a lot of name and hype), CD probably is never going back to the actual Tomb Raider formula.

EDIT: By the way, the reason why her facial animations look weird is because it's the same animation that was used on the previous model even though her facial features like her eye and eyebrow shape are drastically different now, so they don't animate properly. The new model also completely lacks wrinkles which makes it look even more absurd.

Here's a link to the video I recorded. It's done on a HX20 so it's not the best. Also captured at a max of 50Hz as mentioned before.

Wouldn't be easier to use the share button?

I haven't played a TR game in ages. Is there still a lock-on mechanic to the aiming or do you manually aim now? Higher frame rate would be more desirable if so.

There's a difficulty option for combat and if you set it to easy you get aim assist. I prefer free aim like other person shooters but it's good they've accommodated all preferences.

You'll need to do a right click and 'save as...'

I was thinking about the share button but the image quality is marginally better this way.
