The Quietest Next Gen Console is... the Xbox 360?

http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/06/xbox-360-finally-quiets-down-with-brand-new-internal-dvd-drive/

It's no secret that the Xbox 360's disc drive is hella noisy, by far outstripping any incidental fan noises that might be going on inside that white box. Luckily, help is on the way -- sort of. Microsoft has started building its 360s with a new DVD drive manufactured by BenQ-LiteOn-Philips, the BenQ VAD6038, which purportedly runs "super-quiet" in comparison to the previous two drives used by MS, and even speeds up and smooths out load times. Of course, this does nothing for the 10 million plus current owners of Xbox 360s suffering from the noisy insanity of the older drives, but it does mean that as Microsoft ramps up production with this new drive, your next 360 hopefully won't fall victim to the whir.

Finally? hehe

I am looking forward to 65nm revision, new quieter dvd drive, and hdmi. I will purchase again for those (assuming that prices are much lower than now).

is that BenQ drive gonna fix disc scratch problems??? my current hitachi one scratched Gears of War bloody 4 times :devilish:

This kinda sucks. By the time microsoft is through, you'll need to buy a whole new 360 due to all the improvements.

I think my drive might be beginning to go..it makes a terrible racket when playing Gears, but so far still operates ok enough that I haven't sent it in. I wonder if I send it in if I'll get the quiet drive as well..

I got the warranty and plan on using it (I already replaced my Launch unit under store warranty before I had any problems -short of a few random lock ups).

I have a new two year warranty now and plan to exchange it for a new 65nm "quiet" one at the end of the year.

Do people use those warranties to exchange units which aren't even defective? Does the warranty allow that?

depends on the store

I had a small store honor it because I'm a good customer and my launch unit was hot and locking up occasionally which was not a fair trade off for me to have to worry about considering I paid for an extended warranty.

yes, generally a few stores extended warranties consist of a no questions asked return policy. I used it on my PS2 which had problems with the DVD drive, they didnt even ask or check the box, just brought it back with the receipt and they dropped a new one in my arms. Thats only if you paid the extra money for the stores warranty though.

if you are desperate for this drive you can buy a new 360 and swap with old one, then get a full refund. easy as that

Presumably that involves cutting a warranty sticker to open the new XB360, and if someone else gets it, they're scuppered if they need to send the XB360 off to get repaired?

That strikes me as a thoughtless, gittish act. You'll be screwing someone else over, cannabilising their console. I'd be extremely miffed if someone stole bits of my hardware and gave me 'old and inferior' instead. But then, there's a lot of thoughtless gits in the world who'll happily screw someone else over if it benefits them...

its possible with other hardware as well. there should be something like online registration to prevent this.

Online registration isn't going to protect people from removing components. The warranty sticker is there to preent that. You can't open the machine without voiding the warranty. Ultimately, if we're going to say it's not individuals' responsibility not to be gits, it's the shop they're returning the item to who have to refuse the refund on the grounds the warranty has been voided. (Assuming there's a warranty protection of sorts. Does XB360 come such that anyone can open it up without leaving evidence of as much??)

i think for wii if you try to open the console you can never use it again after opening due to some specific screws. that might help then. im not an expert btw
