The phone OS bickering thread

I wouldn't care if there were 100 million Android phones out there...I've got the hot iPhone 4, it's sleak and sexy and does almost everything I want.....
You would probably be just as happy with one of the latest Android phones and then you would have both the time and money to take your grandma out for dinner.

with over 100 apps installed and counting...I don't need to dream about some vaporware gaming phone that will take over the smartphone world...yeah I must be very upset about that.....

100 apps? is that some kind of accomplishment, do you actually think it is harder to download 100 apps on an Android phone? Seriously, it´s like boasting about how many bookmarks you have in your web-browser.

It´s not really hard to understand that the Android phones are outselling iPhone. There are simply more manufacturers thanks to the Android OS being a shareware with a very generous license systems giving the manufacturers a lot of freedom. Which means there is a healthy competition between the manufacturers. The Android Market does also offer developers a lot of freedom, which probably is the reason the number of Android apps is growing like this:

You brought up how no one wanted android in the first place. But numbers dont lie. When NPD starts tracking the number of grandmas standing in line, then we definitely will see iphone ahead of android.

There's a difference between wanting something that's worth standing in line for and someting that's being sold or given away for almost free....but you can't seem to grasp that concept can you?

Why do I care that you and your grandma stood for hours in line to get HOT IPHONE4. *scratches head*..:???:?

You tell me, you're the one rambling about how Android has more marketshare by flooding the market with a mishmash of various phones some starting at $0. Why don't you buy one instead of DREAMING about it?

So apple released a new model for the first time in a year. Can you see the correlation: One model per year - Lines. It´s a bit like in old Soviet-Russia where people got in line whenever there was a shop that got a delivery of some desirable item, since it happened so rarely.

Do you have any idea how many new Android models that have been released the last year? I don´t know the number but there were plenty. Did people get in line to buy them? Maybe some did I don´t know, but given the variety of choice and opportunities there was less reason to do so.

You seem to be on the defensive? The iPhone 4 is hot because it´s hard to get? I would hope it´s hot because it´s a cool phone with a fantastic design, mindblowing performance and features that puts it apart. If not, then those that got the "hot" iPhone 4 would be fools when it weren´t back ordered anymore?

On the defensive? Hardly...I had to wait 3 weeks in order to get an iPhone 4 not because of the hype but because the phone's design is so attractive. When I started using it, it all made sense just brilliant overall package.

The iPhone is being outsold by another smartphone(s) and you know what, it will only get worse, and Apple got themselves to blame, that is, if they think it´s a problem, looking at their financials i don´t think they care that much. The Android will keep on growing and it will keep on gaining momentum until the market is saturated. I expect Nokia to jump onboard in a few years, they can´t keep up with the Google monster and the Android Market.

Yes the iPhone 4 is being outsold by a bunch of different model Android phones put together but it has absolutely zero affect on my iPhone ownership experience. As for Apple they've always done their own thing even if it meant they end up with a smaller marketshare see Mac vs PC. I'm pretty sure they've been debating about offering the phones to other carriers but I think they know they don't have enough manufacturing capacity even if they wanted to.

If Sony plays their cards right they could make alot of money from this, tell any kid they can get a phone that plays Playstation games, and they are on it.

Kids in general want gaming portables, but whether or not they buy one really depends on how much it costs. They need to get the price right.

I asked earlier, what it is that makes the iPhone 4 special, besides the design i am finding it hard to find "features" that makes it special.

Other than physical design which for me is very important, as far as hardware I find the Retina display, dual cameras and accelerometer to be special features.

You know what i find special, flash on my desire, i can actually watch TV via flash from a Danish Broadcaster :)

Yeah that's the one thing I wish iPhone supported, but as long as I can watch Youtube from my iPhone it's not a huge loss.

Apple only releases one new model a year, but it's a model that everyone wants and I doubt the reason is because it's a semi-rare event. If the phone is not compelling nobody would care or stand in line to pay $200-$300 for one.

If Samsung released one smartphone a year I doubt people will be standing in line to get the new model regardless if the new model was compelling or not. Samsung just doesn't have that cool factor nor do their phones. I've seen all the various Android phones out there, but none of them seem to have that "I've gotta get that phone right now" factor.

Anyway if Sony decides to actually release a Android PSP Phone, it will be interesting to see if it will be anything like that mock-up of PSP Go + Touch screen.

This isn't a 'phone OS' thread, it's an iphone vs. Android thread.

For now they both lose IMHO.

Android:
- No quality standalone IMAP client. Everything is either buggy or uses the phone company's servers to queue your email.
- Best phones are CDMA so they can't roam in every country or use different SIM cards
- Are there any hardware keyboards?
- Turn by turn GPS requires data ($$$$ when overseas)

iPhone
- Way too locked down, no tethering, no hardware keyboard, only unlocked if you hack it, no free turn-by turn navigation

My vote for the best (if also the ugliest, most antiquated and awkward interface) phone and OS is the Nokia E72 with S60.

I can create a wifi hotspot and/or tether
I can use GPS and turn-by turn without any data usage overseas
I can roam anywhere and use any SIM card
I have a hardware keyboard I can use with one hand
I have great call quality
I have a (third party) standalone robust IMAP client

I honestly love the looks of Android and iOS and have set up a bunch of both for friends/employees, but neither is yet to where it will meet my needs.

Yah the difference is that I got a pretty good phone at a great price, and I didnt have to stand in line with you and your grandma

You tell me, you're the one rambling about how Android has more marketshare by flooding the market with a mishmash of various phones some starting at $0. Why don't you buy one instead of DREAMING about it?

You sound mad. Relax. Why dont you and your grandma go play doodle jump together on your HOT IPHONE4 :p

oh btw, numbers dont lie!

Isn't that kinda like saying I'm glad I didn't preorder the hottest gaming console at launch because I didn't have to stand in line to get a PS1 for $50?

Coming from a guy who's playing imaginary games on his imaginary phone with imaginary "dedicated gaming controls"..;)

oh btw, numbers dont lie!

No they don't... $0-$50 gets you an Android...because people would pay $200-$300 for them so they could play GT with "dedicated gaming controls"..

Here are some numbers for you.

http://www.gamespot.com/android/games.html?games=popular

So which games are you playing with those imaginary "dedicated gaming controls"? :p

You're right of course. The iPhone is like the Wii... for teens and grannies.

My time is better served than standing in line with you and your grandma for HOT IPHONE4 ;)

Why are you talking about something that doesnt exist. This is thread is now about phone OS, and $0-$50 gets you a real phone that is more powerful and has better features than HOT IPHONE4. Stay on topic.

Here are some numbers for you

Great thanks. What I really want to know is how many grandmas are standing in line for HOT IPHONE4. what about your grampa? did he stand in line too? or did he just make your grandma stand in line

iPhone users get laid more according to Wired too ;)

Well duh, a lot more chicks and practically every gay dude owns an iphone. :p

But does it really need to be said that correlation doesnt equal causation

Yes your time is better served spending hours hardcore gaming on your imaginary phone because it has "dedicated gaming controls"...

Why are you talking about something that doesnt exist.

Wait...didn't you bring up the Android phones with dedicated gaming controls?

This is thread is now about phone OS, and $0-$50 gets you a real phone that is more powerful and has better features than HOT IPHONE4. Stay on topic.

Yes it gets you a real phone not an imaginary one with dedicated gaming controls...I'm glad you've come back to reality.

Great thanks. What I really want to know is how many grandmas are standing in line for HOT IPHONE4. what about your grampa? did he stand in line too? or did he just make your grandma stand in line

You didn't answer my question, which games on that TOP GAMES list are you playing on your phone and how's those dedicated controls working out for you?

BTW I heard you're interested in getting a WP7 phone with dedicated gaming controls now....:p

This thread isn't about the rumored PSP phone anymore. It's about OS bickering. So talking about a rumored handset isn't relevant, stay on topic. BTW, how long did you stand in line for HOT IPHONE4 with your grandma? Did you play doodle jump with the other grandmas standing in line with you?

You didn't answer my question, which games on that TOP GAMES list are you playing on your phone and how's those dedicated controls working out for you?

Why would you ask such a stupid question? The PSP phone was just a rumor.

BTW I heard you're interested in getting a WP7 phone with dedicated gaming controls now....:p

Well considering MS has an actual pedigree in gaming, I'd gladly use a WP7 phone if the rumored PSP phone never comes out. I'm not a fangirl devoted to any particular brand

It seems to be a lot of missunderstanding about the Android platform.

Android:
- No quality standalone IMAP client. Everything is either buggy or uses the phone company's servers to queue your email.
This is not an issue for me, but I read up on it and there seemed to have been some bugs a year ago that have been fixed by now. There are also a number of third part cleints to choose from.
- Best phones are CDMA so they can't roam in every country or use different SIM cards
What phones are you talking about? If you buy a new phone just make sure it works where you plan to use it.
- Are there any hardware keyboards?
There sure is, this is from April this year:
"The top three Android devices in the US are the Motorola Droid, the HTC G1, and the Motorola CLIQ. All have keyboards."
And there have been a few new ones released since then. Actually the smallest Android phone in the world right now, the SE Xperia 10 Mini (the one I got) has a Pro model with a slide-out keyboard.
- Turn by turn GPS requires data ($$$$ when overseas)
You can pre-load maps so you can use the GPS even where there is no network at all.

This thread isn't about the rumored PSP phone anymore. It's about OS bickering. So talking about a rumored handset isn't relevant, stay on topic.

Ok so what game are you playing on your Android OS phone?

BTW, how long did you stand in line for HOT IPHONE4 with your grandma? Did you play doodle jump with the other grandmas standing in line with you?

I'll answer that question when you answer mine, what games are you playing on your Android OS phone? Does your Android phone have dedicated gaming controls?

Why would you ask such a stupid question? The PSP phone was just a rumor.

But didn't you say you own an Android phone for playing hardcare games using dedicated gaming controls?

Well considering MS has an actual pedigree in gaming, I'd gladly use a WP7 phone if the rumored PSP phone never comes out.

But how will you play hardcore games using dedicated gaming controls on a WP7 phone? Will you be "switching teams" again and wait for the Nintendo DS Phone with dedicated gaming controls if a WP7 doesn't appear?

I'm not a fangirl devoted to any particular brand

Oh ok...so you're just a fangirl that dreams about vaporware phones with "dedicated gaming controls" regardless of brand or OS...thanks for clearing that up for us!;)

Ok so what game are you playing on your Android OS phone?

Solitaire sometimes. Gaming on android isn't very good at the moment.

I'll answer that question when you answer mine, what games are you playing on your Android OS phone? Does your Android phone have dedicated gaming controls?

No phone exists today has dedicated gaming controls.

But didn't you say you own an Android phone for playing hardcare games using dedicated gaming controls?

I never said that.

But how will you play hardcore games using dedicated gaming controls on a WP7 phone? Will you be "switching teams" again and wait for the Nintendo DS Phone with dedicated gaming controls if a WP7 doesn't appear?

Changing teams? lol wtf. Only fangirls like you say crap like that. I could give a crap who makes my phone or what OS it uses. Since no phone exists with gaming controls, I'll take the next best thing - WP7. If a nintendo DS phone comes out, I'll try that too.

Oh ok...so you're just a fangirl that dreams about vaporware phones with "dedicated gaming controls" regardless of brand or OS...thanks for clearing that up for us!;)

Umm... you're the one that actually bragged about how sleek and sexy your phone is and that you have over 100 apps installed and that you stood in line with your grandma to get HOT IPHONE4.

In any case, I'm done here. I just want a phone that lets me cut down on the devices I carry around. But its pretty obvious you're emotionally invested in your phone, and its pointless to have a rational discussion with anyone who's emotionally invested in a phone.

Yes that's the whole point...to offer a product that everyone and their grandmother wants even if they have to pay $200-$300 and stand in line to get one.

You really need to explain this obsessive thing about standing in line. Does standing in line on release day make the iPhone special? Then World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Gran Turismo is just as cool.

I am pretty sure that people also lined up when the Droid launched. even when the G1 launched. For me it´s more a question about Hype and being a nerd/fanboy than anything that relates to the product.

The Android OS is moving so fast that it´s apple that is playing catch up, and if Google keeps up the momentum then Apple will be left in the dust, i already think that on most aspects they are already behind.

The Sony PSP thing will be another blow to Apple, Apple needs to get Nintendo on board and add some kind of controls that make sense.

I hope that Apple will do something pro-active, innovate more and drop their arrogance.
