'm pretty sure you need to be 18 to sign a contract for the phone. So I would think many teenagers will be on thier parents plans

Sure if they want the contract price, but there is no law that prevents them from buying the phone without contract. There's no law that prevents kids from buying a prepaid SIM.

Anyway I don't understand the logic why a PSP Go with integrated phone capability automatically makes it the next best invention since sliced bread and everyone and their grandmother will be standing in line to get one.:???:

Sounds like a good base for a fanboy/geek/nerd's wet dream though.

Kids can't buy phones? Of course they can. When did it become law that kids aren't allowed to buy phones?

Kids and people in general buy unlocked phones all the time with no contract and just buy a prepaid SIM.

A kid is going to buy an unlocked smartphone and pay for the service on his own with prepaid cards, and according to you they do it all the time. lol right. do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

As I said kids are gonna buy a $200 DS or whatever, they ain't gonna buy a $500 PSP phone with "dedicated gaming controls" so they could play GT PSP on swappable SD cards...lol...therefore Sony will need to release the non-phone version because if they don't the PSP phone alone is gonna flop...because only geeks like you want to own one. Sorry but there ain't enough geeks like you to sustain it. Sony isn't Apple....iPhone without games is still a iPhone ;) PSP Phone will be PSP Go?

How many times do I have to repeat myself?

1) PSPhone is not meant for a kid. Smartphones are not meant for kids. So you bringing up that a kid would choose a DS over a smartphone is irrelevant.

2)Why do you keep bringing up SD cards? PSPgo comes with 16gb built in. Thats plenty for games.

3)PSPhone will have a version that is without the phone parts. Why? Because PSPhone is not a device meant for kids.

4)PSPhone without the PSP part is still and android phone ;)

We're talking launching a SUCCESSFUL PSP PHONE. We're are not talking about launching a FLOP that only iPhone wannabe Sony fanboy nerds like you will buy.

If you think Android phones are as successful and sustainable like the iPhones then you need to lay down the crack pipe.

Last time I check Android phones are a FLOP and they need to give them away for free or almost free to try and pretend they're competing on the same level as the iPhone. Yeah everyone and their grandmother is standing in line to buy an Android phone...lol.

Let me know when you're ready to come back to reality.

BTW there are plenty of under 18 teens (kids) who buy their own phones (for making/receiving calls from friends, texting etc) without contract but those phones are CHEAP they're not $500+ PSP Phones with "dedicated gaming controls and SD card slots" to play GT PSP...LMFAO...

I love my iPhone and I have tested most Android phones and walked away unimpressed, BUT what you're saying there is pure BS. Android is a very successful platform, HTC Evo's are hard to find, they're out of stock at Sprint's site for example. And it costs the same as the iPhone.

An Android PSP would have a leg up over the other Android phones and would sell decently. They should also have the "ipod touch" equivalent non-cell phone version that's available without a contract as well.

They're not buying $600 off contract iphones either

As you noted earlier since carriers are in the habit of giving android phones away for free or close to free, the likelihood that a kid would end up with a PSPhone is much higher than an iphone since I'm pretty sure parents would rather give their kid a free phone instead of paying $200. ;)

Still requires a contract which isn't free and I'm not too sure if parents wants their kids to always carry around a game console like to school. ;)

Apple doesn't need kids to buy $600 off contract iPhones, they're kicking everyone's ass despite not having "dedicated gaming controls and GT"...

But here's the kicker, these kids or teens still WANT an iPhone...why? Because it's basically a iPod Touch with "I can call and text my friends" capability built-in. iPod Touch is proven to be a hot item.

What you're proposing in your wet dream is a PSP Go Phone...lol...which kids and teens don't want. How do I know this? Well it's not rocket science. They've already spoken, they don't want an Android phone. They don't want a PSP Go. So you want to integrate the two and expect it to be a smashing success? Only in your wet dreams.

WTF does that chart have anything to do with smartphone marketshare from people who are willing to BUY the phones instead of getting a BOGO???? Yeah I could give away Xboxes and pretend people are BUYING them in droves...lol...talk about BS.

Facepalm...

I'd have an Android too if I didn't already have an iPhone, who'd be stupid enough to pass on a free $600 smartphone? Doesn't mean I like the product enough to actually buy one. Heck like many smart people I'd upgrade just to get one and then sell it on ebay for $500...LMAO. In fact I just upgraded to a 4G modem for free then turned around and sold it for $250 on ebay because where I live there's no 4G coverage...lol.

So the question is will Android+PSP Go Phone take off or will it flop?

The problem I see is this. Take away the phone from the PSP Go Phone and you've also lost the Android OS + apps so you essentially end up with a PSP Go which has proven to be a flop.

With iPhone, take away the phone and you still have the iPod Touch which is iOS + apps + games.

This phone has potential. Most important part is the controls, PSP GO controls + a Phone, be it iPhone or Android is very attractive. The PSP tag doesn´t require any special hardware :) it can just be a label and plenty of PSP games should be able to be ported and run on powerfull.

However, looking at the Specs of the current CPU (1 ghz):

The likely CPU for the PSP Android:

Not to mention that they bought something from amd:

I would say that PSP power and beyond is possible.

The game is on :) and i for one welcome anything that brings Apple back down to earth and forces them to compete and innovate again.

Thanks for the heads up. Considering SE used the Snapdragon in the Xperia series they are no stranger to that CPU. While googling I found this published in Jue 2010.

Oh yeah baby, Qualcomm's finally shipping its first dual-core Snapdragons. To whom, is the big question. Its third-generation Mobile Station Modem MSM8260 and MSM8660 Snapdragon chipsets for high-end smartphones -- originally announced in February 2009 -- are now sampling and capable of running at up to 1.2GHz. The MSM8260 supports HSPA+, while the MSM8660 brings support for multi-mode HSPA+ and 1xEV-DO Rev. B. Both integrate GPS, a GPU with 2D / 3D acceleration engines for Open GL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1, 1080p video encoding and decoding, a dedicated low-power audio engine, and support for 24-bit WXGA 1,280 x 800 pixel displays.

Thanks corduroygt for the charts. I can totally understand that the Android phones are outselling iPhone. I am so happy with my Xperia 10 mini, I am discovering new features every day. The user interface is fast, gmail-integration is flawless, the webbrowser works surprisingly well on the small screen (miles better than what the PSP offer), the gps and all free apps are neat. Even if the iPhone has a more polished feature set today, the Android will offer the same core features and now that multiplatform SDKs have been established as Joker mentioned they will offer the same apps.

Personally I don´t want to spend 3 times the money to get an iPhone most on principle as I know it will be dropped and scratched, because of the way I use a mobile phone. I also find the iPhone a bit big to have in the front pockets.

Android being open source and offered by many manufacturers will ensure it´s good value for the money. Apple can get a way with their current price premium for a while living on the brand, but price/performance considerations is helping Android gain market share fast.

What Android phone is free?? Any high end Android phone is the usual 199. I know I just got a Captivate. Some are now even pushing the limits with costing 299, "199 after rebate" .

There are lots and lots of Android phones though, that's kind of the beauty of it, so some old or lower end ones are probably free. But not the hot new ones that directly compete with iPhone, such as Evo 4g, Droid X, Galaxy S, Droid 2, etc. Heck even the fairly low specced Aria is 129 at ATT I believe.

And isn't the 3GS just $99. If anything at the high end iPhone might be cheaper.
I'd have an Android too if I didn't already have an iPhone, who'd be stupid enough to pass on a free $600 smartphone?

Again I ask, can you point me to this free hot droid smartphone? Because I'm pretty sure all the decent ones are 199 and up on contract, $500-600 off just like iPhone.

I'm telling you guys, I predict phones with dedicated gaming controls are going to be a big deal in the future. I mean you dont need a dedicated physical keyboard really imo (I know some people love them, but imo they're the minority). Obviously most smartphones today are touchscreen only. But they've shown with phones like the Droid 2 that a keyboard (to be replaced by game controls) and touchscreen need not present size issues either.

What a ridiculous argument. They still bought the phones. Instead of paying $200 for each phone, they paid $100. Should we discount xbox marketshare because PS3 costs more to buy than an xbox?

Riiiight. The ETF on smartphones is $325 each. B1G1 for moto droid was many months after it came out. So the price wouldnt have been $600 anymore. Case in point, HTC EVO came out in June and is now $449. So $325+$100+$35=$460 which means the seller needs to sell the phone for more than it costs to buy off contract or else he ends up losing money. Who the hell is going to buy a phone on ebay that costs more than if you were to buy it in the store. Its not like there's any shortage of these phones. So LMAO if you think people only bought phones just to flip them.

In any case, if people are flipping them on ebay, there's a market for them which contradicts you saying that people wouldnt actually buy one.

Uh no if you take away the phone part from PSPhone you will have a device that runs android 3.0 that can play PSP games. So functionally it would behave exactly as an ipod touch except that it would be superior for gaming (since it can do touch and have physical controls) and have a superior gaming library. Dont know why this is even an issue because you cant take away the phone part from PSPhone in the first place. It's a phone that comes with a PSP app. How hard is this to understand?

You can get the Captivate from Amazon for only $50. In a few months I predict it will be free.

The best deals on hardware are always from resellers. I've had local resellers offer me $120 CASH + free feature phone on a 2yr contract in the past.

BTW how is your captivate? I've been thinking about getting one.

But according to you kids wont even want to play games on it. According to you kids would rather play games on an iphone since its a superior gaming device. So parents would give kids an iphone instead?

Huh? Kids would rather do ANYTHING on an iPhone than a wannabe iPhone because it's THE PHONE to own. They don't want an Android phone...bolting on a PSP Go to the phone isn't going to make them want an iPhone any less..

What a ridiculous argument. They still bought the phones. Instead of paying $200 for each phone, they paid $100. Should we discount xbox marketshare because PS3 costs more to buy than an xbox?

He was responding to my comment about everyone and their grandmother not standing in line to buy Android phones. Giving away phones isn't the same as standing in line to pay money to own the coolest phone on the planet. A marketshare chart has nothing to do with standing in line to pay money to buy the hottest phone on the market.

WTF? You don't buy a phone off contract and then try to sell it on ebay for profit..lol. What I'm talking about is signing a contract and getting the phone for free or close to free then turn around and sell it on ebay as a Off Contract phone for $400-$500. People do it all the time man, I've done it for my friends...lol. I also did it with my 4G modem no difference whatsoever. Last month I sold a brand new unlocked Sony Erricsson 3G Walkman flip phone for $140 on ebay and made a $100 profit because I only paid $40 for the upgrade + 2yr contract.

Who the hell is going to buy a phone on ebay that costs more than if you were to buy it in the store. Its not like there's any shortage of these phones. So LMAO if you think people only bought phones just to flip them.

Well using YOUR sales logic nobody would buy it...surprise!

In any case, if people are flipping them on ebay, there's a market for them which contradicts you saying that people wouldnt actually buy one.

Yes there's a market for them because many people are stuck with X carrier and cannot use a iPhone so they get the iPhone wannabe which is a Android phone....doesn't mean everyone and their grandmother is standing in line to buy one..

In what way is Apple not innovating and competing with products like the iPhone 4?

They are competing with the iPhone 4, just by selling a new design, but innovation is on a back burner i found nothing spectacular in the iPhone4.

I can understand that it is hard to come up with a revolution everytime you bring a new product to market :)

You are right that buying an Android is not about "standing in line to pay money to buy the hottest phone on the market" as much as actually caring about what you get for your money. When the iPhone came it was revolutionary, it no longer is, the same core functionality is offered by other platforms and the Android platform does it very well. A lot of people is still buying into the iPhone hype. I was pretty close doing it myself some year ago, but I just don´t like spending that kind of money on a phone and I don´t think I am alone. A lot of people have less disposable income than me.

And where I live I don´t know anyone who bought an iPhone for their kids. I know a girl who got an HTC Desire and absolutely loves it and a friend of mine just told me his 11 year old daughter wanted a Xperia 10 Mini as her new phone and likely will get one as they are dirt cheap.

Kudos to Apple for bringing the iPhone to the market and being able to cut the crazy margins they are currently doing, but the novelty is wearing off and its "new" features are becoming commodity. When I look at a price-search site here, Android phones from HTC, Sony-Ericsson and Samsung in that order are currently topping the iPhone as most frequently searched smartphones.

Just one more thing, operators don´t give away phones, you always end up paying for them.

First of all, no one who already has service is getting the latest android smartphones as a free upgrade. The only way to get a free phone is to start a new line of service. Now that smartphone ETF is $350, hardly anyone flips phones that are from a new contract.

People who are at the end of their contract are offered the upgrade price of $200 for the newest android smartphones. The most they can realistically sell it for is $500, but then they'd be stuck with their old phone for the next 2 years. How many upgraders actually do this??

But I fail to see what your point is. People flip iphones on ebay too... a lot more.

Yes there's a market for them because many people are stuck with X carrier and cannot use a iPhone so they get the iPhone wannabe which is a Android phone....doesn't mean everyone and their grandmother is standing in line to buy one..

So a grandmother stood in line for an iphone... is that supposed to mean anything? I dont recall anyone standing in line for a RAZR and practically everyone ended up with one (including grandmothers).

So far this is only a rumor and you already know how the phone works??? Where did you buy this PSP Go that's running Android OS???

This thread is a discussion about a rumor about a PSP phone. The rumor says its running android 3.0, is branded as an xperia and has market access. Why are you even in this thread about the rumor if you dont want to acknowledge the specifics of the rumor?

Dependng on their needs and what model phone they currently use they may very well not use or have a need to use the new phone especially when they can make a big fat profit if they can sell it as a Brand New no contract phone on ebay. Many people just need/want a basic phone but they're still eligable for smartphone upgrades every couple years even if they don't have a need/want. The smart people are the ones who recognize the opportunity to make money and those are the ones who upgrade then sell instead of using their existing phone year after year without taking advantage of the new phone offers...aka free money.

But I fail to see what your point is. People flip iphones on ebay too... a lot more.

The point is iPhones are hot, Android phones are not. That's WHY you see so many iPhones on ebay because sellers like me know we can make lots of money because there is a shitload of buyers.

So a grandmother stood in line for an iphone... is that supposed to mean anything? I dont recall anyone standing in line for a RAZR and practically everyone ended up with one (including grandmothers).

Let me sound like a broken record.

The iPhone is hot, the Android phone is not. I doubt the Android PSP Go Phone will be hot just because some nerd on an internet forum suggested it should have "dedicated gaming controls for playing games like GT PSP on SD cards.".

Great now you've explained why people sell android phones on ebay. Dont know why you brought this up in the first place.

Let me sound like a broken record.

Android outselling iphone last 2 quarters. Numbers dont lie.

It will be hot because you can play games (like GT) which suck with touchscreen controls. Also games like Rage, Street Fighter and Madden (which is one of the top selling games on itunes right now) wont be gimped by crappy touchscreen controls. But the option to play touchscreen only games is there too. PSPhone will have all the bases covered. You can even store games on an SD card too if you want. It's all about giving the customer a choice :)
The rumor says nothing about a non-phone PSP running Android OS and apps.

You brought that up. Why I dont know, since as I mentioned before. You cant take the phone part away from the PSPhone in the first place.

Sure because there's a bunch of phones from different manufacturers flooding the market...besides Apple is supply constrained anyway...doesn't mean everyone and their grandmother is standing in line to get an Android. As I said iPhone is hot despite not having dedicated gaming controls.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for choice but I just cannot see everyone and their grandmother will be standing in line to buy this Android PSP Go Phone.:???:

It will be interesting to see what Sony does, but I'm not too sure an Android PSP Go Phone is the answer. Who knows Sony may surprise everyone and release something similar to the iPhone without a bunch of buttons. I think if Sony does that and make it look and feel as sexy as the iPhone 4 then they will regain the respect they had when they made the coolest portables like the Walkmans.

Nowadays even MS is kicking Sony's ass in the portable touch screen media player market. Have you seen and held a ZuneHD? It looks sexy and feels like a iPhone 4 just doesn't have the phone bits. Totally destroys any Sony portable touch screen media player out there. If MS integrates phone capabiliies into the ZuneHD form factor running WP7, it will be a fantastic competitor to the iPhone.

You cant take the phone part away from the PSPhone in the first place.

Why not? That's really up to Sony. If they want to release a standalone PSP alongside the PSP Go Phone then they will have to take the phone part out in order to keep it below $200 to compete with DS/3DS.

A grandma standing in line is supposed to be is supposed to be some kind of bellwether if a PSPhone is going to be successful?

How many grandmas bought madden 11? How many grandmas are going to buy Rage?

If you're not the type of person does not like to play games like Madden, or Quake, or GT, or emulated games then a PSPhone is not for you. Stick to your iphone and keep playing doodle jump. Why anyone is so intent on seeing a device fail that hasn't even been released is beyond me.

At the end of the day, more android phones have been sold.

At the end of the day my point is still valid iPhone is hot, Android is not...regardless of who sold or should I say who dumped more phones onto the market...Samsung Captivate for $50 and soon to be free because everyone and their grandmother is standing line ready to pay $200...

A grandma standing in line is supposed to be is supposed to be some kind of bellwether if a PSPhone is going to be successful?

No it's a simple gauge to measure how hot an item is. If people are preordering, standing in lines and supply can't meet demand then the item is hot...End of Story.

How many grandmas bought madden 11? How many grandmas are going to buy Rage?

iPhone/iPod/iPad owners bought Madden, last time I checked these iDevices didn't have "dedicated gaming controls". Yes the PSP Go Phone will be a game changer because...gasp...it will have "dedicated gaming controls".

Why anyone is so intent on wanting to believe a phone with "dedicated gaming controls for playing GT" will be the next best invention since sliced bread is beyond me.

I don't really care if this rumored PSP Go Phone becomes reality and succeeds or fails...I already have an iPhone 4 with over 50 purchased games and growing isntalled on it. If you believe it will be a smashing success based on it having "dedicated gaming controls" good for you! I just find that logic funny and contrary to the available evidence. It's called disagreeing...get over it.
