The Official, Long Awaited, TV Shows Thread

Midnight mass on netflix, pretty damn good, slow burner, not quite sure what is happening on the island of 130 residents, that has a slow reveal. but can get quite dramatic. All the actors are new faces to me, and yet some hold sustained long sections of dialogue, almost soliloques (sp?) very well indeed. 7 1hr episodes.

Its a very decent watch.

Midnight Mass was a good series with substantial character development. If I had any complaint about it, it's where it saves a lot of the action for the last 6 to 10 minutes of each 60 minute episode, baring the last episode.

The later books would have provided great material for screen adaptation. Now they are making up nearly everything from the ground, except a couple of ideas which they have decided to turn upside down from the original concept. Realizing the thinness of script in their hands, they are injecting ill-fitting generic tropes everywhere. Like,

It seems a galactic empire cannot exist without a planetkiller mega-weapon that backfires their creators.

Yeah, I cannot believe anyone that has read the Foundation series allowed that abomination into the series. It completely blows my mind just how vapid and ignorant the writers for the show are.

Whoa whoa to everyone that mentioned midnight mass. Whoaaa! It's surprisingly good!

The way the show dangle clues piece by pieces leading to the reveal also nice. So those that pay attention to details can start formulating theories, and those that more casual in watching can have a "oh! So so X Y Z was for this! This makes so much sense!"

I quite enjoyed Midnight Mass, I liked the character backgrounds and development intertwined with the horror story.

I've just started episode 2 because I cannot stop watching after the ending of episode 1.

I'm going to be going to bed at 2am, aren't I?

Looks like I am one of the few who enjoy Foundation, probably because I never read it I think.
I'm glad you are, but from everything I hear you're right; it's because you had no expectations/knowledge of the universe that's been built around it all.

I love the Foundation series, don't want to watch this just to get annoyed, but I hope it's at least good for people with no knowledge of Foundation.

You're not bothered by the acting performances, character flatness and slow (compared to how predictable it is) story development?

Lee Pace does his job well as expected, and the only thing I'm curious anymore is what the emperor triad+Demerzel ends up to be. Jared Harris is apparently liked by some but I can't stand his overacting and the melodramatic scenes - the script of course is already ruining my view of the performance but I don't think I could like his Seldon in any case. Rest of the cast fail to have any effect on me.

Mebbe the performances aren't bad if you're not expecting them to act like in the book and the slow character development can't help but be predictable to those that have read the series, even if they do change things. We'd at least have an idea of the directions they'd be moving.

I won't watch it, I KNOW I'd hate it. LOL

BTW - I didn't think "I, Robot" with Will Smith was all that bad a movie...it's just it wasn't the book. It could almost have been from a collection of short stories set in Asimov's universe, but if I ignored the title I didn't hate it. ;)

No, that's not it - there really are no characters from the books (only names) so I am not comparing them to books, the acting is just quite mediocre. Well okay Seldon is a book character, him I dislike for both reasons.

As for development, there have been precisely zero events or scenes identifiable from the books after the first episode. It feels slow and predictable because the script is borrowing from everything else _but_ the actual 'source' material.

Fair. I haven't seen it.

In other TV stuff, did Doctor Who just start a new season or do y'all have Halloween specials there too as well as xmas and New Years ones? (I don't get the tradition, but I love it. :) )

If anything it is too fast, there’s just been a few episodes and the things that have happened already … !

Meanwhile, The Morning Show continues to be good as well and I still love Ted Lasso too.

I also watch the Seven Deadly Sins anime’s new episode. Pretty entertaining.

succession, man. holy shit
Why is everyone bonkers about this show? I looked up the show's description and it didn't scream, "WOW!," to me.

I know it must be good, but how and why should I watch it? Am I missing something?

Also, Doctor Who Flux sux. :(
