The Official G84/G86 Rumours & Speculation Thread

Its a mistype? many source write before, no AGP version coming because the HSI chip not working with the g8x chips.

A bit aside, but why GF7 series are so slow in NFS:Carbon all the way down, compared to R5x0 and G8x?

It's an Xbox360-Port - meaning that shaders were possibly not developed with G7x's weaknesses in mind?

either they are cherry picked because of the different settings the are using, or they are fake, HAL, vertex shader is saying that even the 8800 gts doesn't out do the x1950xtx by much only in very few circumstances does it really out pace it, mostly in newer games. And it seems according to those benchmarks the 8600 gts is faster by quite a bit.

I doubt that.
If you take a look at the comparison between the 8600 GT and the 7600 GT PCB's, you'll notice a striking similarity, due to both GPU's being pin-compatible.

If so, there's nothing preventing a manufacturer from re-using and old AGP version of the board (you know, the old rotated design from the 6600/7600 AGP days), since the HSI only talks with the PCI-Express x16 interface portion of the GPU directly and converts its command set to AGP8x.

I would understand Nvidia's official stance on GF8 + AGP as a way to focus public attention on their much broader PCI-Express offerings, since, like SLI, they also sell chipsets with that support and, as indicated by them in the Vista chipset driver issue, the NForce 3/2 families are not a priority anymore.

I find it strange that they would have to inform their partners about this situation in response to Charlie's article. Why wouldn't they have known about the lack of a 2D mode from the start?

Perhaps this "internal" memo was meant to be leaked ? ;)

Is it just me or did that memo make little sense  ?
I don't see what's so hard to understand about it. It just states that it's not a bug, the lack of 2D clock throttling is intentional, because there is little savings to be had. I don't really see any problem with this for parts in the lower price brackets.

Make sense to me too. Charlie: "OMG 2D clockz no worky on G84/86!!! Do not buy one lest they melt your hair!" Nvidia: "Hello? They are designed that way."

So by general consensus, does it seem to be the case that the g86, while perhaps slightly dissappointing, will outperform the slated RV630 chips?

Woops, I meant the G84 chips. Although you can hardly blame me, G86 = Geforce 8400 while the G84 = Geforce 8600. That's a just a catastrophic mix-up waiting to happen.

I'm asking cause I want to know what the best single slot (non-gigantic cooler/fan) card for the next generation will be. So far, it looks to be the 8600gts, but any plans for a smaller 8900gs or x2800gto or something like that?

BTX-motherboards are the bane of my existence
