The Last Guy (SCEJ)

Heh... I don't mind the simplicity. Given the price and the whackiness, I will buy a copy. One of the early impressions mentioned "escape techniques", so there may be some special moves to hide the crowd from the monsters (e.g., leave the streets temporarily).

This could have already been posted but for those who want to know -

Sony Japan have announced that PSN title 'The Last Guy' (314mb) will be available in Japan on July 31 for 500 yen.

cheers

More videos released. This time revealing the possible moves. You'll need to click on the moves at the bottom of the screen to see additional videos: http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/lastguy/ (Click on "Follow Me !" first).

I think the techniques/moves are:
* Dash
* Emergency gathering
* ??? (Thermography ?)
* Zoom in/out
* Surround (a building)

EDIT: I may be a little off with the Japanese translation. one and StefanS are better at it.

Wow it's cheap... I wonder if that is a bad sign. That is cheaper than the PS1 games which are 600 yen each.

The game play videos I saw of it didn't impress me that much. And the graphics looked very muddy in the videos even the 720p ones from the JP PSN. I guess that is the main turn off for me at this moment. Hopefully it was just due to the compression though. Also the 2D sprites didn't look very well drawn or animated.

But I don't know, for 500 yen I might pick it up anyway.

I guess the muddiness of any graphics are due to the limits of map resolutions off Google, which aren't great.

Isn't cheap a good thing ? It's just a simple, retro 2D game.

Eventually they will probably speed up more and more to increase the difficulty. Realistic/refined animation may go out of the window even though the maps may look "real".

I can't tell if the maps are muddy yet. Given that you can zoom in and out, it shouldn't be too bad.

Still want that to be translated with the instructions? If yes, I can do it tonight...

This sounds very promising, not many games are described as "Generously flaunting PS3's processing power"

Ya that is very suprising wording. From what little I had seen of it I assumed it was only about as demanding as a flash game.

Unless every little survivor has it's own AI routines or something.

A little bit off topic, I was looking at my old PS1 games lately and felt nostalgic. Which made me wonder why on earth isnt Sony releasing more PS1 classics in PSN??? They have a TON of awesome PS1 games they could release in PSN. Which are often much better than many of the new XBLA and PSN games we get today. It makes me wonder even more when I see some of the old time classics like Resi2 and MGS released in some PSN stores from other regions.

Yes please. Would like to know how different/similar it is to a Snake game. :)

Sarcasm perhaps? The whole thing clearly isn't taking itself seriously.

Reading through the original comments, it sounds more like layman's views. They are probably comparing it with Snake. For something as simple, they certainly throw in a little computing power to jazz things up. To them, the idea of using Google Map may be larger than what techies perceive.

I'm going with sarcasm as well. The whole thing feels like an experiment: will a weird, almost kitsch retro-game sell on PSN if you price it at <$5?

For $2 I'd buy it. But anything more, probably not. Unless there's some aspect of it I'm missing.

From what I've seen it looks like;
  • get near people & they join the crowd behind you like magnetic dust in a Wooly Willy.
  • Crowd gets thinner/longer or fatter/shorter depending on the width of the street.
  • Dont let crowd touch wandering monsters while herding them into safe zone.

Just reading this thread should have taught you more about this game than that though. ;)

Bought it and played it a bit.

It's not blowing me away or anything. But it is fun and unqiue. For 500yen I could do a lot worse.

It's less like snake and more like pac man.

Nice ! inefficient, I think the Japan version is only a partial game. The full game will have 14 citiies. Someone mentioned that it's a cross between Snake and ChopLifter and Pacmac. :LOL:

They launched a promo site: http://lastguy.jp/
You can generate a level out of any URL and play the Flash game on PC.

well yea :p
i just guessed that the stuff like the thermography were extra tools used to either find more people to group or monsters to avoid.

Are there more than the 3 power-ups mentioned on the playstation blog? (invisibility, freeze time, warp to safe zone). How many cities are represented in the stages?
