Metroid Prime:

It was a known franchise of course, but it was known as a 2d side scrolling game and was last seen on SNES quite some time ago. I think it ended up as a massive suprise for most people that a dev pulled off Metroid in full 3d and first person in such an absolutely spectacular way. Especially since it was the relatively unkown Retro Studios who pulled it off.

I actually agree with you, the game looked very mediocre when shown at E3, even the Hardest of Nintendo/Metroid fans were sweating until they finally played the game.

I would deffantly have to say Resident Evil 0 that by far was one of the best games I have play and has the best graphics to that I have ever seen got to love those pre renderd seens.

Ultima 9 . It came out what 4 years ago and i just finally got hardware that could run it right ... and let me just tell you it is a site to see.
