the best 5 years to come?

it seems to me, that we have one of the best generations of gaming coming up. If we look at the last gen and compare to next gen, it looks like every system is much more well thought out.

ps2= was a system created with no enemy or competition. Sony didn't have to worry about Sega or Nintendo, and Microsoft wasn't in the game yet. It seemed rushed with a horrible launch. A system that was a nightmare for developers, etc.

ps3= Sony can now see their enemy. they have Microsoft to push them. they now have Live to push them to innovate with their own online service. They are also thinking more about development and making games easier to make, etc.

xbox= was a quick and dirty system, not created for profit but simply to slow Sony down. it was cut short with a 4 year life cycle. Much of the time was used trying to establish franchises, franchises that the competition has had for years.

xbox 360= a system that fully realizes online and has the ability to make Microsoft some money. Better CPU and Graphics chip created specifically for gaming. Has franchises to work from and a good 5 - 6 years to grow.

GC = A system launched in between management changes. A system with no innovation and was basically a less functional ps2 or xbox. Bad marketing, bad design, etc.

Revolution = Nintendo has realized that they can't compete against the big 2. they have now settled in to a niche market that puts unique gameplay above all. A system with a cheaper price point but also an innovative input device.

it seems that each company has settled into a more specific market with better chances for profit. Add blu-ray, HD-DVD, online fully realized with each company and HD TV's into the mix and things get interesting.

So are we in for 5 years of gaming glory or am i just crazy?

I agree!

This generation will truly offer some things we have never ever seen before.
PS3 will probably blow us away with some amazing stuff later in its lifecycle, MS with XboxLive will probably offer some amazing stuff via online and NIntendo will offer their amazing stuff with their new controller..

So yeah, this gen have all the ingridients for some of the best stuff ever...

I'd say you made descriptions of the consoles to suit your viewpoint that this generation is going to be the greatest.

In the end the games rule. I was sure this gen couldn't topple last, what with amazing quality time and time again from PSOne, as well as classics like Mario64, Zelda and Goldeneye, but it did IMO thanks to the amazing quality lineup of the PS2 and classics like Halo, Wind Waker, NG etc.

Will PS3/X360/Rev offer as much fun? I don't know. We'll have to wait years to find out.

thats why i added the part about me being crazy. but if you look back at the ps1/n64 generation, things like 3d gaming and analogue sticks were introduced. this gen seems like more of the same. But next gen offers some new things, HD and online (as good as Live was, with the xbox, it still wasn't fully realized) + the rev remote and even more with eye toy 2. who knows. Developers have more to play with that includes more then just more powerful hardware.

I understand your why you said you don't know, but I can see the early footprints that say "yes" is the answer to your question. Better Eyetoy games, better connectivity with PSP -> PS3 connectivity, Better Xbox Live, and with Nintendo's unique controller how can it not get better than what we have today?

The thing is, every generation sees better improvements in these areas. Basically all you are seeing are refinements.
PSOne era : PS2 era:
No eyetoy > Eyetoy.
No online period > Online and LIVE.
No KB/M > KB/M
No mass consumer movie playback > DVD
No connectivity > GBA/GC connectivity (no matter how poor)

We have the revmote, but we don't know what that is going to achieve.

Every generation is going to see improvements and new things. The point is, do those new things outweigh what the last generation brought? Do they improve games more than the generation before did?

seriously, you know that you have 4 bags of crap upstairs ;)

I have a Turrican ringtone on my mobile... aah my memories .... makes me also feel old :)

I recall Turrican was best played on the St than Amiga. I think it was due to the framerate/slowdowns.

Atari 800 rocked the house, baby!

The Atari 130XE wasn't a real necessity, but it was certainly nice anyway. ;)

The 1040ST...? Back to rocking the house, baby!

The Mega ST4 was just for shits and giggles, though. It was great, however, to have really the first consumer computers with 1MB and 4MB of RAM. ;)

Regardless, Amigas were just pretenders to the throne, baby!

...you remember when THAT was the "PC war" of the day? IBM PC's were still so farking clunky, and even the Mac's vaunted GUI was clunky by comparison. Ah, the good ol' days...

no it was the other way around. all games where best played on amiga
60FPS action baby!

in the first years, most devs made games for ATARI and ported over to the better hardware aka amiga. but after a while, they started development on amiga and downgraded their games to atari st.

I can't believe you guys turned this thread into Atari vs. Amiga, how shameful...

as an owner of both an Amiga and 520ST back in the day, I will abstain from casting my vote, lol

I think with consoles it is always the best 5 years to come, if only for the fact that devs are closer to realizing their dream game. Each generation gives them more power to do what they wanted to do the previous gen, the previous previous, all the way back to gaming on a trash-80/C-64/coleco/ATARI....even Amiga.
