I guess that depends on if they actually deliver on all the hype for a change.
Lisa Sue doesnt strike me as the Hype style. Amd have just delivered the results. Consistent predictable with a touch of overperform under her leadership. Pretty darn impressive given the circumstances and the numbers prove it. Wake up.

Only delivered on Polaris to a degree. The real show is hopefully coming soon with new CPUs and GPUs and the hype machine is powering up.

Wasn't she presenting the Polaris introductory slides a few months back? Or was that someone else?

You mean Polaris is getting closer to it's original MSRP.
Oh you're right their MSRP was only $229. A play to gain marketshare and it was only competitive with GTX 970 at the time. A move like the Radeon 4850. Also works to gain mindshare because it looks like generosity.

Oh really. I don't agree. Their marketshare is in ruins and their financials aren't exactly great. How could you see Kaveri as a kind of success? And Polaris just keeps getting cheaper.

Their marketshare went up 50% from same quarter last year and Polaris cards are still being sold way above their MSRP in practically every place in the world except the US since black friday.

It's the same with NVidia I think. I don't really understand why this happens. Retailer collusion!

Good to hear their marketshare has improved.

Demand allows for these prices. Many consumers were seemingly waiting for FinFet cards to arrive, and their performance delivered.

Well except that RX480 and GTX 970 are/were about the same price and performance right? GTX 1080 and 1070 were certainly exciting on the performance front though. Priced for it too even with a die smaller than GM204.

Even all the nvidia fans I see on FB groups and such agree that a 480 is a much smarter buy than a 970.

Why? D3D12 future-proofness? Not that either really has the performance for the future anyway. The 3.5GB thing might be a snag someday. I'd bet the 970 has driver support for longer. ;)

I don't know about the rest of the world but in the UK the GTX970 only came down to RX480 price points after the RX480 came out, and then they sold out and there were no more GTX970s.

Um, isn't the 1060 NVIDIA's answer to the 480? The 970 is last gen.

As for Polaris, it's not bad and I'd probably buy a 480 for a secondary rig if I were in the market, but ultimately it only brings AMD on par with Maxwell wrt power efficiency. And unfortunately Pascal exists.

Interesting. I just looked them up on Newegg and the prices are crazy high. Looks like a bunch of 3rd party sellers gone crazy.

Yeah Tottentranz said that RX480 was exciting and selling well because of the move to 16nm. I mentioned that 970 was about the same speed even if old (so why is Polaris exciting? Maybe the 8GB.) 1070-1080 are more exciting, but more expensive (because they can be), even with a die smaller than 970/980.

I wonder how popular 1060 is. It seems to have established itself as the most popular high-end gaming option in notebooks. Lots of notebook models to choose from. It too is about at the level of a 970.

I said FinFet cards in general, not RX480 in particular.

The RX480 is nowadays well above a 970 in performance in all but the most extreme gameworks titles. Just check any review that is less than 1 month old. Yes the 8GB will inevitably make a difference in most titles, some day.

Apart from that there's the fact that it behaves a lot better on new APIs, it's a 1.5 years newer card, it has Freesync / Adaptive Sync, it has HDCP 2.2 through HDMI 2.0, HEVC hardware decoder/encoder, and new drivers are still bringing significant performance upgrades and new features (last of which was yesterday).

I'd bet the 970 has driver support for longer.
Define what you mean by "driver support" and how much are you willing to bet?
Serious question, because I'll take you up on that bet.
