It will be intresting to see how 4k pans out. Sure to be many twists and turns.

RED has tremendous momentum right but that could change. I don't think Broadcom will have a h265 decoder available until mid 2014...Red gets fist mover advantage.

All the rumors swirling with the Xbox Next having substantial DVR capabilities makes me wonder if MS might support the Red Codec unless they have their own solution?

Red isn't even a disc format, there's no disc, why are we talking about that? ;)
Their competitor is Ultraviolet which has support from almost everyone including Sony and Microsoft. It's an uphill battle selling a 1500$ player that's 100% proprietary and doesn't have any clear studio support.

You mentioned h265...the Red Codec is already on the march. Red claims a 4k movie will be 15 gigs using their tech. H265 is going to have plenty of support but may be outclassed by the Red codec for the delivery of 4k movies.

Yes I agree, but only if they give us a very big HDD. For me that's the scary part about the 160GB HDD from the latest Orbis rumors. If they want us to buy full games download, it better be user replaceable.
I was expecting a 320GB or 500GB low sku, and maybe a 750GB or 1TB high end sku. Would have been perfect, we'd full install all our games.

The Kotaku rumour was about the Devkit not the retail unit. It would be more expensive for Sony to put 160GB HDDs into the PS4. 250-1TB HDDs would be much cheaper for them because of the production volumes and economies of scale, and will be exactly what they will use. Nothing to be scared of. Devkits won't be downloading content from the PSN store, so no need to put in a massive HDD.

from the latest Orbis vgleaks... it all makes sense I guess, but I would have loved a high-end 1TB sku at launch.

Storage:

- High speed Blu-ray drive

  • single layer (25 GB) or dual layer (50 GB) discs
  • Partial constant angular velocity (PCAV)
  • Outer half of disc 6x (27 MB/s)
  • Inner half varies, 3.3x to 6x
- Internal mass storage

  • One SKU at launch: 500 GB HDD
  • There may also be a Flash drive SKU in the future
