Spider-Man 2 [PS5]

Very nice job on the smooth transition from fast travel selection on the map to gameplay!

The game looks great, and there's some clear improvements in areas, but I'll be honest.. it's not the jump I was expecting for this particular game. Even the set pieces, while cool from a conceptual standpoint, don't seem as detailed and bombastic as I was expecting for next gen Spider-Man. For example, when Lizard is climbing up the skyscraper with an armored truck dangling from him. The vehicle is bashing all over the place and twirling around hitting the building as Spider-man is dodging falling pieces.. but there's no damage happening to the building... windows aren't breaking.. and honestly.. the scene isn't nearly as impactful as it should be because there's also nothing happening in the sky above either.. This looks like anything else that would have been done last generation.

Now.. am I being fair? Probably not. This is assuredly a difficult enough thing on its own.. but I can't help but feel that if Naughty Dog made this set piece.. windows would be shattering as the vehicle hits them and you'd be able to see inside of the windows that smash out as you maneuver around them to keep pulling Lizard back. Spidey would at some point be climbing directly on the vehicle as it's spinning around, Lizard would probably smash through the windows, go inside the building, and drag the vehicle and Spidey through an office floor with people scattering out of the way, with papers and computers flying and falling off desks, lights breaking.. as he reaches the other side and starts to climb up again..

That's more of what I was expecting from this game. And to be honest... it's even more "Spidey dragging from behind something while trying to catch up or slow down a big hulking enemy"... Like in the initial gameplay reveal.. Miles is being pulled along dodging from side to side, while Lizard is jumping around running from him...

Is that all that the cool set pieces are going to be?

I realize I'm being hard on the game.. but these guys have given me reason to expect more from them. Maybe there's plenty of other crazy things in this new game.. but so far from what I've seen, is that it looks like a refined Spider-Man PS4 and not Spider-Man 2 PS5. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah the Image quality is pretty rough in this Most recent Trailer a Lot Break Up.

I Wish they added RTGI for their 30 fps Mode. That Screenshot above Looks mainly Shades by SSAO :/
Im verry happy they didnt add rtgi on console with amd hw capabilites otherwise they would end with mediocre graphics like metro exodus (as it would impact massivly frame time resources)

So I decided to try to make a couple comparison shots in a similar style to the official shots they've released of Spider-Man 2 using Spider-Man Remastered with the photo mode inside the game. Obviously the time of day isn't perfect, the seasons are different, and lighting is much different, but you can decide for yourself how much of an improvement there is or isn't. I'm using a camera mod which extends the distance you can move the camera away from the player character in photo mode. Everything here is done using the in game photo mode and filters/lighting tools provided by it. There's no post editing except to crop because I have a Ultrawide monitor.

The first one really just looking at the building quality/density and lighting. I couldn't get it anywhere close with Spidey in the scene, so I took a similar style shot but with Spidey in the pic underneath.

The second one is this one from around Central Park which I tried to get as close as I could.

it's a bit unfair to compare at those distances, buildings could be twice the polycount that we would not notice, same for trees.

If a game is drawing 2x the polys than it needs to with no apreciable difference, that's a game with a terrible LODing system.

I think it was unrealistic to think there would be a big leap given it's not a ground up PS5 game. I think it will be interesting to see what they do with Wolverine and expect that to be more impressive visually and technically?
I will complement their output performance however. It is unmatched versus their first party peers.

Long day of work before i can finally try it, and i'm a bit tired of Youtube recommendations showing me all the spoilers before even touching the game :(

imagine an easter egg like, if anyone remembers, in MGS1 PS1, pyscho mantis could read your memory card and tell you what games you were playing, now imagine a multiverse portal in spiderman 2 that would throw you into another installed first party game, like some horizon scenery, briefly meeting Aloy, or uncharted etc...

I wonder what uncharted would say to peter parker. He always had a witty quip at hand.

I love the idea that at the end of Uncharted 5: The Last Charting, Nathan's dad will turn to his friend and say "Nathan was the Dog's name. We called him Uncharted"

Cue the credits!

a few more
