Sony VR Headset/Project Morpheus/PlayStation VR

Never been to a strip club then I see. Trust me, there's a big market out there for this. That said, the porn example was only 1 semi-serious example of how there could be many non-gaming applications for VR. Gaming will, at least initially, likely be the main application but on PC at least, I expect considerably greater diversity than just gaming.
I've been a strip club twice. One was when I was about 17 and the other years later on a stag do. To be truthful, neither experience did anything for me which I guess is why I've never felt the need to visit them more. Of course there may be other things that VR is suited to but none leap out at me. Games and movies are clear candidates and I guess a virtual teleconference would be a third. But everything else I do on a computer: browse the web, write code and words and do my work, I just can't envisage VR changing it for the better.

Never wear jeans to a strip club. Always dress pants or if your tacky then sweats. Anyway they don't really do it for me either , I've only been a few times myself. I found that in my maybe dozen trips in 15 years or so the seedier the better otherwise its just a waste of money.

however I know a lot of guys who would pay money for this. I even know people who still pay for porn

I've been in a strip club once. Well, it was a nightclub actually and there were some strippers as an extra that night. I was 17, but they just showed their breasts and not much more.

I can imagine people staring at the private areas of girls with VR, just like they did in Lollipop Chainsaw and "I Swear!! I Did it By Mistake!" achievement. Heck I love girl's butts, so... Imo, there is a huge market there. :)

can you guys elaborate more about the strip club? i have never been on one, its hard for me to imagine how it is like to be there.
how do you thing it translates to VR porn?

As proven time and time again, humans create an exciting new tech and either use it to kill people, or for sexual gratification. We really are little animals.

This is really turning creepy.

Is this an extract from eastman's guide to strip clubs? Where where I buy the full guide?

This thread has turned very weird very quickly :yep2:

Strip clubs are usually "look but don't touch" (yeah I'm sure there are plenty where that doesn't apply to "private dances" but I have no experience in that area). So the "look but don't touch" paradigm seems to fit very well with VR where you can look, but not touch.

More generally though, I think the appeal of porn on VR isn't to simulate some 3d sex envionment which yo can mov around in but rather to allow you to watch regular old porn in life size 3d, in effect putting you right there in the room with whatevers going on (as long as you don't try to look around!) rather than watching it on a little screen.

To be clear though, porn is just one example of a big potential non-gaming application. Virtual tourism and social media would be two others. I also imagine dating/chat websites would get a whole lot more intersting with some VR in the mix.

Video chat like porn he just described?
I didn't realise that's what he meant, I was trying to envisage two people both with VR headsets on a chat/dating website talking to each other and what you see. The other person wearing a VR headset?

I'm thinking virtual chat rooms (as in physical rooms) where you can move around and talk to people's avatars in your own voice. The avatars would optionally be based on your own image. Then perhaps break off into physical private rooms for *ahem* private chats with said avatar. Of couse that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure more creative people will have better ideas.

While I get the 3D aspect you lose what you have now with a basic webcams: being able to see each other, including faces, in realtime. Would you rather see a real person or an avatar of that person?

Maybe I'm missing something, I don't use any type of chatrooms. FaceTime and TelePresence is about it.

I was thinking more about the non webcam based chat rooms which are literally just text or voice (where people prefer to hide behind an avatar). Obviously there's no way this could replace proper 2-way camera chat. Having said that though, this sounds like a pretty awesome application for those paid sex cams (which I've never actually used), if those girls set themselves up with a 3d camera which you could view in VR but still have 1 way interaction with her through voice or text, I can see that being very popular. I guess that's pretty similar to the virtual strip club idea though.

We do seem to be focussing too much on porn here btw lol

isnt you just described an VR-MMO? At least thats the vibe i got from reading that :D

I showed Occulus DK2 to my parents, and I forgot to plug in the power on my laptop, so I'm guessing it was running at a lower clock speed. A few spots in the demos, the framerate dipped and my mom immediately felt sick. I tried it out and had the same thing happen before I realized the power was not plugged in. Maintaining at least 60fps is going to be really important. The judder from anything lower can really set some people off.

60Hz is the low bar which is why most are targetting 90Hz (Valve, Oculus) or 120Hz (Morpheus).

Consistently high frame rate seems to be very important. The first Morpheus prototype had 40ms lag, and they said all demos had to be carefully chosen for the unveiling, they knew it wasn't enough. Racing games were fine at cruising speed, and made people sick at higher speed. I think all competitors are now somewhere around 20ms. This really seems to be the minimum.

I'm definitely getting the final consumer version of oculus, but I'm worried about having to fiddle with graphics settings with every PC game. My gtx780 should be OK, but setting the graphics options for a stable high frame rate always needs fiddling to find the best compromise. I hope the VR game engines on PC will be designed to avoid this and adjust everything automatically.
